Choosing a research advisor is something you will likely do in college, masters, and definitely PhD programs. Obviously, this can be a very important decision and will impact a large facet of your educational experience. Here are six points to help you out. Enjoy.

Recently came across your channel (will have to thank my algorithm). Your videos have been incredibly insightful and helpful in understanding the application process at a deeper level. As an international student who didn't have the opportunity to work in a lab under an experienced supervisor, I am apprehensive about getting in. I have done a couple of research internships but it is not something that will make me stand out. Can you please give me some advice that can help me as an international student? Thank you for your content!

I think if you are an international student (I assume you are open to studying in the US), maybe try and see if there are any exchange programs that will allow you to do research or work at another institution. I knew some students outside the country who have been able to find opportunities that way!

Amazing video as always! Would you email a professor directly tackling the “are you willing to take students” issue? Or do you think it is better to comment who you would be interested in working with in the SoP?

I think you might be able to do both! Since they do get a lot of emails though, you might not necessarily expect a response but it couldn't hurt.

Just found you & I really love your videos! Separate question: do you think I really need to take the GRE for apps? I’m in the neuro field if that changes anything

Glad you enjoyed! You probably want to check on a school by school basis. If it's listed as optional for your dept, then you can leave it out.

I am in a dilemma ...which of these points should you focus on the most? I am currently looking for PhD advisors and have found someone whose personality matches well, is a pretty established Professor but the person doesn't have funding currently for a new student....the department says they will support me as long as is needed? Therefore, I want some advice on this

If the research topic is interesting to you, and you're willing to find funding outside of what the professor can offer, I would say that this could be a great opportunity.
