People, DO NOT EVER PUT GREASE ON THAT TAPER. Omg this is ridiculous. Ive drag raced snowmobiles and utv for years, i have a 400hp sled and a 600hp utv. Once that taper spins once on that clutch the crank is DONE. Just pull clutch on a warm engine. I have NEVER LUBED A TAPER AND HAVE NEVER HAD ISSUES PULLING A PRIMARY. This is terribly advice. Maybe the old timer did this on a sled with 50hp lol.

Another trick with the spring is antiseeze the spring where is resting on the loop. Basically where it is touching. This takes more vibration out of the spring.

some people are saying this guy is wrong to put antiseize on a taper shaft. here is why he is right!... no matter what type of taper shaft in any application... assemble it with the torque set to around 70% of spec, keep beating on the bolt or nut with a punch and hammer and retorquing it over and over. when that same torque spec at last does not make the bolt/nut turn anymore, the units are then properly mated. torque it to 100% spec, and at this point it no longer even needs a bolt or nut. i'm serious. it will stay on until pulled off properly (always bang on the pullers because the shock is what pops it off). therefore, when following this method with the bolt/nut are indeed in place properly, it can assure you that the units will indeed stay together no matter what grease or antiseize is used on the taper shaft. if you are just setting the clutch on and torqueing it once, then sure, you could be worried about greasing it. but the guy is correct in saying it will eventually not come off without lube. the reason for this is this clutch taper bore is thin-walled and is stretching excessively around the tapered shaft and creating a wedge effect. thus it only takes a slight bit of rust to overpower the capabilities of a puller.
@sleeeper88
@sleeeper88 Күн бұрын
Worst advise possible. Clean taper with alcohol and torque. I've raced sleds, utv with up to 650hp, you NEVER lube a taper fit taper. EVER. why do you think the factory doesn't. Lol you go ahead and run it without the bolt. Good lord...
@yukonjon5964
@yukonjon5964 8 сағат бұрын
@@sleeeper88 people are not putting tapered shafts together properly, thus they believe as you do. as an example of properly... there is a 3.5" tapered shaft on the end of a Caterpillar 3516 engine camshaft. the instructions are to install the drive gear, plate and bolts onto the cam, torque to spec then use a sledge hammer and punch to strike the plate. repeat until the bolts no longer turn up to spec after striking. this has been known to take an hour of hammering and dozens of re-torque's. putting oil on the tapered shaft allows the process to go more quickly and the heat of the engine eventually causes the oil to absorb into the pores of the steel. when we take them apart it makes little difference if it were assembles dry or lubed. either way it takes a 30 ton press to get them off. it's more about metallurgy and expansion of the outer bore. plus the pressures are so high in the taper that any lube is displaced anyway. and again, at this point the retaining hardware is just a safety measure. those who have had primary clutches fall off... those clutches were not installed properly.
@sleeeper88
@sleeeper88 7 сағат бұрын
@yukonjon5964 I'm not going to argue, you are obviously knowledgeable but this is not a bulldozer. I've been around the fastest centtrifical clutches on utv and snowmobile race engines in the world, we actually have to use a locating pin on some of these so the taper will not spin. We are using crank bolts made out of the best material available so we can torque well beyond the factory levels for more holding power on the taper. We also put the primary in the oven at 150 degrees so it will slide further up the taper. The LAST THING you would want to do is lube the taper. This might work on some tapers but not on a primary clutch.

@@sleeeper88 granted with the smaller sized engines i have not ran over 200 HP to run into any issues, so sounds like the application your discussing has its limitations. my main point is if this Cat dealer guy says this motor is different and they have used antiseize with better success, then i believe him based on my own experience. so my guess is that all three of us are right per each application.

once ya get the servo bracket at the best angle, take the bracket off the sled and fabricate an angle brace for it. can be sheet metal bent into a box section shape, or even just a little piece of flat bar steel bent up on on both ends. just rivet it in place and the ECU will thank you. as it is the computer has to chase over-correcting in trying to precisely modulate while the bracket flexes.
@yukonjon5964

for "drilling out" the rubber guard, it may be better to use a correct size nail held in a vice-grip and heated with a propane torch. end result will be stronger and less likely to rip out. the pointy soldering gun works good too but ya wont want to solder with it after that.
