Petit Gris De Rennes is fairly easy to grow and an early cropper. It is only a small melon, but good flavour. I live near Rochdale in Greater Manchester and grow melons in an unheated greenhouse on my allotment. This year was a crop failure for melons, I think due to the wet, cool and cloudy summer, you have to be careful of overwatering and roor rot with melons. I did grow watermelons one year from grafted plants I bought, but struggle to grow from seed in my area. I have also grown melons in a large cold frame successfully also some years. They do like manure few inches under the surface with top soil capping the manure. I also put yellow sulphur powder around where the stem goes into the ground to repel water from the stem and roots immediately near the stem, which is an old trick on 'The Victorian Kitchen Garden' BBC programme from the 1980's. A warm spring and hot summer are the best years to guarantee success with melons I have found. I once grew an enormous melon 'Uzbek Sweetness' which was a rugby ball oval shaped melon with a dark green skin and sweet, white flesh. That was in a year with a very warm spring and hot summer.

That's what I will be doing this year too. But may do a compost bay just for that. As it may be a bit too rich. Also not sure of the pathogens. If I wasn't planting for 6 months or more I would do it. As it would rot down enough by then. But that's a great benefit of keeping chickens all the 💩 😂

Hi. I've never used straw before, but I can see the advantage of using it. I'm not sure where I'd get it from - but I'll ask some of the other plot holders for advice. I have some large areas that I've not developed at all yet, so this is covered with black plastic until I can produce the beds next spring. The plot had not been cultivated for many years prior to me taking it on, and the weed growth was incredibly dense - hence the black plastic (not my favourite material for sure). The beds that I have developed now contain flower bulbs, garlic, onions and broad beans. Enjoying your videos. Thanks
@oddsocksgrowing27 күн бұрын
Normally straw bales can be bought relatively easily. Mine were from a pet shop/ farm shop. But do come up on FB market place too. As for the black plastic. We did the same too at the beginning. It was all grass and brambles and weeds everywhere. It helped us manage areas to work in. Because we bough thick quality plastic we were able to use in different areas over the years. Normally when we're starting on really weedy areas. Or we did plant squashed through holes in weedy beds. A great way to keep growing while dealing with the plot. Keep going. Before you know it, it will be the new growing season, with all the excitement it brings ☺️
@StevenCollins-u4m26 күн бұрын
@oddsocksgrowing Thank you for your detailed reply - much appreciated. Good idea to grow squashes through the plastic - I've never tried them so that would be fun to try. Having an allotment is so rewarding in many ways :-)

I agree with you, what you are doing and not doing is just my cup of tea. Do you have any books by W E Shewell Cooper? I think you would really like them. He wrote over 60 gardening books and he is said to be the pioneer of No Dig and is a fan of letting the worms do the digging and I've not seen cardboard mentioned so far. I have many of his books including Compost gardening, his no dig book, and Soil, Humus and health. I recently got them from WOB £3.50 each and they are very interesting. I am not a fan of f1s either and I love buying seeds from Real seeds and have many packets. I have also saved my own seeds . Let me know if there is anything you are interested in growing . Jane

I haven't read anything from him. I'll have to take a look. ☺️ I'm all for balance. Using nature for nature. As much as I can anyway. Things take time, and each year we add or adjust as we along. Glad you didn't have too much damage. That's the problem with strong wind. You may secure your own things down on the plot. But others may not. Which in turn can damage your own things. But sometimes no matter how much we prepare, mother nature just wins.
@JR-zo3hbАй бұрын
Sorry to hear about the damage to the allotments. The overgrown plots are terrible for the other plots and what makes it even worse, I applied for an allotment 3 years ago on your site. I have discussed this with a councillor for this area, but it looks like nothing has been done. I now have to apply each year and can only name one site. The gardens in this area are a decent size so I am able to grow a few vegetables. It's so frustrating to be just told I will be contacted when i get an offered a plot when I can see many unused plots.
@oddsocksgrowingАй бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear this. I was in exactly the same position as you for these plots. I waited 15 years to get a plot. Which is shocking. As we were told that there had been loads empty for years. I know they let a few last year. But nobody has come to do a single thing on them at all. All the allotments are going over to association very soon. I would like to be alot more involved in the whole process. I want to get the allotments back to how they should be. For people to take on. As at the moment it's extremely bad there. I'll try to find out for you what's available on there for you. And if you wanted any help just ask. The council are very reluctant to let these plots. Almost as if they want them unlet, then the land could be sold to housing 🤔. That's why I want to get the site cleaned up and let 👍.
@JR-zo3hbАй бұрын
@oddsocksgrowing I asked the councillor I spoke to if they were not being let because it was going to become housing. He said not 🤔. I am very close to two sites so when I reapply each year, I put the other site as I though I may have better luck. I don't mind which site so would be grateful if you have any info. Thanks Jane

I found less lugs in the straw bed this year then everywhere else to be honest. Not to say it won't harbour them, just like anything they can hide under. But I will probably take off before planting. Makes a good cover to suppress weeds in the meantime. Mushroom co.post can be a great addition 👍

Hi. You've done really well to produce all that compost. That's something I want to improve on my allotment; I have a couple of bays, but I've not prepared them well enough - and the weeds took over. I shall be dismantling and starting again - and hopefully make a better job of it this time.
@oddsocksgrowingАй бұрын
I think composting is the most important thing when growing. We try hard to get as much green waste as possible through the year. In fact, it's probably harder to maintain the compost heaps than the veggies 😂. Simply because of all the materials we use regularly and the loads we use. It gets hard work on the turn. But keep going with yours. We use a cover, an old builders' bag over ours to stop weed seeds being blown in. If it's a low heat compost bay, you're doing. Be careful on adding weeds with seeds in. Good luck with your compost 👍
@StevenCollins-u4mАй бұрын
