G'day from Down Under! I live in the Subtropics and when trying to ripen tomatoes on the vine with little sun I have used sun reflectors or heat reflectors to ripen the tomatoes. For example. I let some tomatoes run around the edge of a concrete bird bath during winter and as the sun beat down and heated the bird bath up during the day it then released it later in the afternoon and early evening. It is a similar principle to wine grape growers in cold areas using large stones beneath the vines. I have also used the banana trick to success for already picked tomatoes. I must say that I have been more vigilant about pruning blight affected leaves and removing them from the property this year. It is much like the ocean, you can't afford to turn you back on them and only water using a steady stream at the base. Lovely to meet you and subscribe. Cheers! 🍅🍾

What great advice 👍. I think if it hadn't have turned so wet and cold here, I would have given that a go. Blight 😩. Shall pull up remove the toms as I don't want all those seeds in the compost. I'll throw them on the compost. Or dispose of it in the bins. Thanks for subscribing 🥰

My tomatoes are almost all ripe now, not from outside elements but from newspaper or paper bags 😂. But they got there eventually and they are now chopped and frozen. Great update Helen I hope it’s a dry spell for you, Ali ☔️☔️☔️🇨🇦

Great video Helen! Shame about the awful weather we are having atm! We've been grabbing the tomatoes as soon as they blush so they don't split on us. Touch wood, no blight here yet, but will see after all this rain in the next couple of weeks. I normally use a big paper bag or wrap in newspaper depending on how many i get at the end of season. When the banana starts to go brown, i normally mash it up and put it in an old yogurt pot and stick in an ice lolly stick and put in the freezer. Our child loves those fruit ice lollies and almost creamy like ice cream/milk lollies. You can still leave the skins in for the ethylene gas to ripen the green ones. Also, when i make green soup or sauce, etc i add a little bit more apple cider vinegar to lower the ph/increase the acidity level for flavour and safe canning. Take care and hope you don't get too overwhelmed preserving them all at once!

@@oddsocksgrowing I left an empty bucket out in the garden on the 20th and there's nearly 10cm of water in it!

Yup, we normally do compost it to be fair. Just not the tomatoes themselves. We end up with thousands of tomato seedlings. But there is a blight from europ that has started to come over here. Which unfortunately can survive in the soil. How far its travelled, how much and how far who knows. It's one to keep an eye on I suppose 😓
