Everything your piano teacher told you to do when learning the piano, this piece tells you to do the opposite: - Play mechanically without expression. - Play the incessant bass line so loud it covers the melody. -Forget accuracy, just cluster fuck the piano for a good minute or two, (but in tempo). This piece is so punk rock and David plays this incredibly! 🤘🏻

The pianist handles the work with great care and attention to dynamics, and the sound engineer delivers the best recording of this piece I've heard on the Internet. This is what Steinway concert grands were made for. Many thanks, folks.

I still come back to this after first finding it 2 years ago. The composition is just a sick (in a good sense) interpretation of the old tune and David's performance is the best I've heard and I've watched all I can find. I still want to learn this for myself someday, but I bet it's difficult to find an audience that can get it. The 'likes' of this are an indication. Not enough patience with internet peeps to get what is being done here. This performance still blows my mind. The Beatles T-shirt seals the deal. David is cool!

Don't you love it when a co-worker tells you to check out this composer cause "you might be into... well... things unexpected". So this is my Rzeweski defloration 😎 What an intense treat. I like it! Respect David! Now I will continue this journey with "The people united will never be defeated!"

This is the best and cleanest performance of this piece I have yet heard. And the first where the f-f-d-bflat motif is heard in the opening measures, rather than just two hammered bass notes as other play it. Awesome !

This one never sits totally right with me. The 'ending' section (the bit that starts with the bass line and counter melody) is so broad sounding, beautiful and LONG that I feel I should have gone on a longer journey to get there - almost as if we don't quite deserve it. Wonderfully played!
@feifeskufus3 жыл бұрын
That’s why Rzewski put in the option for an improvisation before the ending section and also cadenza at the end, both of which would give you your longer journey

The piece is intended to evoke the grinding, deafening machinery of a cotton mill, with a lovely blues melody that sings out from amid the monotony and chaos. It’s not meant to be a “pretty” piece.

That is awesome on so many levels, it's difficult to describe; I'll try anyway: * A true concept for the dynamics in thispiece,ranging from sublime pianissimo to crushing fff. * A sense of line, making the song theme audible where others are still truggling to get the two arm interaction right. * An evenness in forte passages that very few pianists are capable of keeping up. * A wonderful sense for climaxes * A really nice piano, well tuned, evenly voiced and superbly recorded with a sense of space and dynamics. Kudos, a great performance! Recently heard the 2 piano version performed by Rzewski himself.
