So what do I do when damn near everyone that has heard me narrate, has said something along the lines of quite literally the most popular person in the monkey group? Namely, "I could listen to you read all day long?" I have no clue what to do other than just narrate THHGTTG, Robert Aspirin, and other niche properties so that people will associate me with "story time," which some of my friends already do, considering that they literally call me and ask me to talk about a specific subject until they fall asleep.
@Chaun19985 ай бұрын
Yay, I can't edit the comment. I'm currently waiting on my friend that has a Masters degree in Sound Engineering to tell me what microphone to buy for maximum narrative voice richness
@Chaun19985 ай бұрын
First paragraph should read as follows, but again I cannot edit my comment: What do you do when everyone you've ever known has said something along the lines of: "I could listen to you read all day long?" This was generally said by the most popular girl in my current monkey group.

Sounds like you have it made. I am an octavist and my voice is even deeper than Colm McGuiness. But this is VO and I am not as expressive with it as you likely are. which is what truly matters. I have given up on voiceover, but there's a future in it for you, it seems! Be blessed.

I create courses for my job. I also do audio recordings where I read aloud and then apply it to the learning course videos, but i read like a robot or end up reading too fast and screw up my pronounciations. This video really helps.

Seems counter productive. When you make a demo reel you are showing off your talents. If you cannot produce professional sounding voiceovers on your own then you aren't going to get anywhere with a professional sounding demo reel. It's like getting someone else to take your bar exam to become a lawyer.
@AlisoCreekVoiceOver5 ай бұрын
Thanks for writing. I understand your reasoning but your talent and ability as a voice talent rarely involves (or requires) the skills that are required to produce a effective voice over demo. In a typical voice over job you don't write the script, you often don't direct yourself, you don't chose the background music or sound effects. You don't mix and master the finished production. And you don't even decide that you're are the most appropriate talent for that script and project. When you work with a demo producer you offload the responsibilities of selecting and writing material for your script, directing you to achieve the best performance, editing to select the best takes, choosing music and SX that enhance your performance without overshadowing it, mixing the spots to highlight your abilities, sequencing the spots for the most powerful impression and mastering the finished, fully-produced demo to industry standards. Offloading this to a professional demo producer allows the voice talent to be just that - a voice talent - and concentrate on being A+ at what they do. Abe Lincoln said: "A Man Who Is His Own Lawyer Has a Fool for a Client". Strong but true language. Don't risk being a C+ producer doing your own demo. Be an A+ Voice Talent working with an A+ Demo producer to get A+ results.

Thank you William for your invaluable information. I've already enjoyed recording my voice for family and most importantly grand children with children's stories. What a buzz. Being an actress I get what you mean, bringing the page to life is so much fun, and how I realize that practice will be the key to a possible professional gig one day soon with grown up content. So looking forward to this journey. Thank you again, Cheers Jo :)

Honestly, I don't have much of an interest in doing voice-over work. I'm here because I want to become a better narrator when reading aloud to my future wife, children, and students, as I have a deep love for stories, spoken and written, and I will most certainly be reading to my family, and maybe to my students when I become a teacher. Still, thank you for this video; this is just what I was looking for! I will likely return to this video a few times in order to recall these pieces of advice, should I forget them, and practice them as well. Thank you!

Sub-vocalizing is the only way I have ever been able to read. Saying the words in my head as I see them and always only at one pace. About 190 WPM. What is the method you mean, where the eyes are ahead of the mouth. How does that work?

I don't know that many people, so I'm sure it wouldn't be considered 'a lot' to some of you out in this comments section.
