I find my voice will sound different if I record in the afternoon vs the evening. Same mic, same distance, same settings, everything. Drives me crazy!

You can also RECORD a Variation, but of course your producer/director will/should tell you BEFORE you record HOW to pronounce words you're not sure of. Use FORVO etc, and if no guide is available and they don't know, then just use your own commonsense in how words are formed, and do several pronunciations at the time of your recording, so that you can simply use another line with the variation of pronunciation. William did not mention this, so I thought I should add it. Which eliminates ALL pick-up issues that may arise when you find out you need to re-record a certain word/phrase/paragraph...Always do it now, if you don't use it later, that's OKAY

Good day Sir, would please make a video on the best approach to edit voice over audio using audacity. Your video on normalization and limiter was very helpful but it doesn't take into account others like compression, equalization. Thanks so much for your teaching.

I’m finding that by far the most difficult aspect of this is mic technique. Like a lot of VOs these days, I’m using a Sennheiser MKH416-which I love-at relatively close range (8-10 inches). I suspect that shotgun mics, for all their great sound, have a proximity effect that extends much farther from the mic, making getting repeatable results more challenging. Thinking I need to get my booth better sound-treated, then work the mic from farther away. Waddya tink?

David Wandelt Ah, the Sennheiser 416, known as the "West Coast Voice Over Mic". It is not a cardiod mic, but rather a HYPER-Cardiod mic which means it's VERY sensitive to both distance and direction. So try to be precise in where you position yourself in front of the mic. Think of it like a pin point laser, not a flashlight and keep your mouth where that laser points. Also the closer you are to the mic the more slight changes in distance will have an effect. (every time you double the distance you decrease the volume by 6dB! So a change from 2 inches to 4 inches means a decrease of 6dB) The distance of 10 inches (25 cm) is best because there is less possibility of much change in sound. That's the distance I see when I go to studios in L.A. You can check that the volume is the same by just looking at the waveform and seeing if it matches the original in height. If necessary, you can use a high-pass filter to match the tone by rolling of the low frequency to match. I find the trickiest part is to match the performance. Seems like my mood is different each day. So I read along with the original to match volume, pitch, speed and attitude. Try all of these. Once you identify what's changing, the fix is easier. And Keep talking!
