Can't wait to watch this (can't this second). I'm particularly interested in how you managed no resupply after MTR. I expect to hike at a slow pace, and I wonder if it's feasible to stay on trail and have no further resupply after MTR. I'll watch the video shortly to see if it addresses this.

So, yes, it sounds as if you planned for 10 days after MTR with no resupply. How did that go? How did you manage that load with the bear cannister? How was the weight for the last ten days? Any help appreciated!

Thinking about planning this trip (after not backpacking for decades) and watching you here makes me vicariously nervous. I'd imagine being very eager to get going at this point, but also anxious about all the things that can go wrong and halt the trip -- or worse, I guess, but I'd be focused on just making it end to end. P.S. I'm also about your age and I'd also be doing it solo. I don't mind that at all, but I'm aware that it makes me more vulnerable.

You should totally do it! Get your pack weight dialed in, hike CONSTANTLY with that pack. I filled my pack with towels and 30# of dumbbells. Hike in the shoes you will wear. Max out the incline of your treadmill. You'll do fine. Acclimate in Mammoth. Take Diamox. I posted a video about food prep and shipping it out. I also did a video about applying for the lotto.

@@JRHikes Thanks for the encouragement! The good news is I’m in decent shape for my age (nothing impressive, but decent - lost a lot of weight recently). The bad news is I haven’t backpacked in decades and all my old gear is extremely outdated and on the wrong coast. Essentially, I have nothing. So, do you think this is realistic in terms of time: 1. Start buying gear now, over several months. 2. Apply for the lottery in January for July/August (I have both months off work). 3. Get in a couple of shakedown hikes in Spring to test equipment and test myself. 4. Attempt the JMT in July/August, probably at a slow pace. Or is that too rushed? Maybe I start preparing now for a hike in two years?

@@StamfordBridge keep this in mind, Jessica Mills AKA dixie, she hiked the entire Appalachian trail with very little to no prep. If you haven't watched her hiking channel, you should. Homemade Wanderlust. I would suggest that you start with your big three. Your tent, your backpack, and your sleep system. Get those out of the way. Those are the ones you will spend most money on. Definitely after that start working on your kitchen. Then after that start working in on everything else in your essentials list. I believe that you should definitely apply in January if you're going to attempt a July / August hike. In the interim, I would hike as much as you can everywhere and anywhere. Even if it's the same loop every weekend. If you're going to do a southbound hike, you will start off slow coming out of Yosemite Valley. As your make your way past Tuolumne Meadows, you will start to pick up your pace.

I flew into Fresno from indianapolis. I took the YARTS bus line to the Yosemite welcome center in Yosemite valley. That is all laid out in the 3 part video that I posted titled John Muir Fail. I mentioned in those videos that I also took the alternative to diamox. Unfortunately my body didn't care what I took. I still ended up with altitude sickness. I was told by several other hikers that had done the trail before if you're going southbound, you might consider flying into Reno heading to Mammoth and staying at Mammoth for a couple days prior to hitting the trailhead. I hope this helps and good luck.

Hi, this is great. Did things change for 2024? I plan on doing a NOBO Thru hike on the JMT starting at Whitney Portal and including a summit of Mt Whitney in the Summer of 2024. This video and the link to the website with the Lottery information both say "Planning to hike Mt. Whitney in 2023" (www.fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5150055). Is the information for 2024 the same as it was in 2023? Does the lottery opens on Feb 1st of 2024 or has it changed? Do the first come first served permits come available on April 22 of 2024? Can you please confirm?

JR - you will be back. Living here in CA and loving these mountains can certainly humble us- immediately. I sense you just need a few good days at elevation and you'll be able to do this again. I'm sure you've had a lot of support and advice about how to prepare for altitude "before" your trip. Electrolytes, lots of water, well before your trip. and I stay away from alcohol before hand too. I'm 61, I long to do the JMT, but have spent time at elevation and climbing mountain roads on bike. It takes a few days to acclimate - even if you've been in the mountains before. You'll be back. I'm sure. :) Love your prep videos. Thank you. p.s. my wife is a migraine sufferer and she too has been at elevation for 30 years and loves it!!

Failure is how we learn. I made an announcement back in 2017 that I was going to thru hike 500 miles north to south to east to west just to check out Indiana better. Failed 50 miles into it. What I learned....left way too late in the season(started on Labor Day), didn't bring any credit cards and barely any cash, and then I got a nasty case of poison ivy while locating an emergency bathroom in a forest. I am glad I didn't complicate things further by pushing onward. Every fail is a valuable lesson learned, good luck in the future and stop eating sugar 👍

Excellent review. I had already settled on the Two for my upcoming hike in March 2023 of the Appalachian Trail. Although I ordered the ground cloth from Gossamer, I preferred another option that is more rugged in design. I just ordered the Tyvek sheet and a nice grommet tool kit to finish the setup. I did order the top shelf for this tent and will try it out along the hike. Looks like it will serve two purposes. A place to store things in the pockets and a place to hang socks and shirts to dry inside the tent.
