I think a big part of the reason why the Empress wasn’t afraid to go after the ED is because of her father’s death. This isn’t just a matter of her gaining control or power, this is a blood feud, and she will have her vengeance. Also one scene which I was hoping you would cover- the Emperor guessed that Qing was sent in by Yingluo. She thought this would make him appreciate her attempts to reconcile the mother and son as well as rekindle his feelings for her. Instead he retaliated by stripping her of pretty much everything of value in her palace, which very clearly sent the message that she is no longer a factor in his life and her meddling is incredibly offensive to him. Yingluo’s face when she realizes what is happening is so sad to me that I truly believed at that moment that she was in love with the Emperor too, and was deeply regretful that she realized it too late. It made me think that perhaps she was coming to realize that while vengeance is satisfying, it can destroy as much as it can restore. It was a very well done scene imo.

Some love for Noble Lady Qing. She’s a sweet person but she’s extremely dependent on Shu since her family is a vassal of theirs. Aside from the power dynamic they feel like a pair of sisters to me honestly. Shout out because in history, she raised one of the last surviving princes in the next dynasty the Jiaqing Emperor. She couldn’t be honoured too highly since she wasn’t the Empress Dowager because she was of Han descent not Manchu. Shu is just a bit too headstrong but her love language is gift giving and she’s usually so generous with Qing to help support her family. It’s adorable. I love them as a pair. I completely feel her struggles in the harem, having to carry her entire clan on her back with no support that Yinglou has like being a consort and her sister being a royal in law. I feel bad for Yuan he’s been through so much but I don’t feel like his obsession with Ying Lou is over. He doesn’t seem to want to kill her but torment her and destroy anyone else close to her. He’s a yandere and his position in the household department as well as being the Empress servant puts him in a position to suppress her. I hope he lives his life out in peace but that won’t happen in this dangerous harem. Empress Nara is becoming arrogant and is slowly losing her mind. She has no one who loves her genuinely. Her entire family is gone. It gets worse because we see her pregnant in this drama but she loses most of her bio kids which they don’t touch in much. I hope she can find peace with herself.

Yes!! I felt terrified of her in that moment, and I think Yingluo did too!
-While looking something up, I realized Google Translate was actually getting words from the names of the remaining servants, so I decided to translate them here. Mingyu is written with 明玉, which means 'bright jade/gemstone' (玉, 'yu', can mean either 'jade' in specific or 'precious gem' in general). Zhenzhu is 珍珠, which together translate as 'pearl' (珍/zhen meaning 'precious, treasure', and 珠/zhu meaning 'bead'). The eunuch, Xiao Quanxi, is somewhat unique---his name is more of a nickname than a proper full one. 'Xiao/小' means 'small/little' and seems to be used for lower-ranking eunuchs (I think someone once asked why all the eunuchs have 'Xiao' as a surname, which in this case they don't) and the end character 'Xi/子' seems to be common among eunuchs as well; it means 'child, son, small'. Taken together, this means the name is a diminutive nickname. The character 'quan/全', which is unique to Quanzi, appears to mean 'complete, all'. Yuan Chunwang, on the other hand, doesn't have a nickname--Yuan is his surname and Chunwang his given name. He's written as 袁春望. 'Yuan/袁' is a surname meaning 'long clothes', 'Chun/春' means 'spring', and 'Wang/望' means 'to see, to hope'--his name roughly means 'Spring hope'. -I love the mutual respect Yingluo and Shushen have for each other; Yingluo is a graceful loser who realizes when she's been outwitted and that she can't finger Xian for anything, and Xian appreciates the challenge of finally having someone on her level. -Xian gets a parrot from Prince He, and recites a poem by Zhu Qingyu of Tang, 宫中词/Gongzhong Ci, 'Palace Poem/Complaint'. "The flowers bloom but the palace doors are tightly shut /There’s two beautiful palace maids sitting together at the veranda enjoying the sight/They have much to talk about and want to share their woes in the palace/But in front of the parrot, no one dares share anything. ". It sums up the plight of the palace women pretty well: they want to be open and honest about their feelings, but because the walls have eyes and ears, they have to keep them bottled up. She recites this in front of the Emperor to try and entice him---don't you want to hear about my *secret feelings* for you?---and it works like a charm. -Hailancha mentions the Huolan Tribe when talking about Fuheng's exploits---they'll be important later on. -One of the ways in which Yingluo courts the Empress Dowager's favor is writing Buddhist scriptures in her own blood, which is similar to the technique I mentioned in a previous comment about sewing tapestries with one's own hair. Blood was considered a very potent substance, as its' deep red color identified it with the creative, life-giving yang aspect, and it was used in rituals to keep negative, dark and damp yin away. Human sacrifices (祭天/jitian) to heaven were practiced during the Han dynasty, but over time, animal blood and other red substances such as cinnabar and vermillion ink were used instead. Protective talismans were usually written in either blood or vermillion ink, to give them the spiritual potency to drive away evil forces, so writing Buddhist scriptures in blood was considered a more powerful variant, a way to ensure the immortality of the Buddha's teachings. You can actually tell whether or not a blood-written scripture had anything else (vermillion, cinnabar) mixed in by whether or not it kept its' red color; pure blood fades to a light brown after a while. Usually, male monks would produce these scriptures, as repeated bloodletting was believed to damage the body's heart meridians and the flow of vital energies, and since women were considered more 'fragile' and bloodletting would decrease their chances of getting pregnant, under normal circumstances Yingluo, as an imperial consort, wouldn't be allowed to do so. However, her getting pregnant is now a moot point, and she's repeatedly demonstrated that she's no 'ordinary' woman, so she copies anyway. -IIRC, Yingluo sneaks in Doctor Ye disguised as a maid (he's been disgraced and kicked out of the palace for his role in the contraceptives scandal) to diagnose the Empress Dowager. I think she pretends to suffer a stroke of some sort, and it's not fully clear how much of it is her acting and how much is the doctor by her side (who's on Xian's payroll), so Ye gives her a new perscription (which she purposely rips up so as not to expose her ruse). Liu Gugu, the Empress Dowager's head maid, has been using her knowledge of medicine to purposely make her sick. She also takes Yingluo with her, so the Emperor can miss and feel guilty towards them both. -Lady Qian's brother, Qian Zhengyuan, was based on a real person, Qian Chenqun, a court minister who served under Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong who was a talented poet. He appears to have gotten his artistic merits from his mother, the famous painter Chen Shu. She had to raise Qian and his two brothers by herself after their father, Qian Lunguang, died, and sold her paintings to keep them housed and fed. She also found time to educate her sons, and Chenqun credited her as allowing him to pass the imperial exams. She gifted one of her most famous paintings, 'Ye fang shou jing tu', 'Night Spinning and Teaching Sutras', to Qianlong, who was grateful, wrote a poem on it, and showed it to his ministers. She was also a poet whose works were collected in the Fu'an Yin Gao. -As far as we know, Xi Guifei, Empress Dowager Chongqing (and the basis for Zhen Huan) was Qianlong's actual mother. However, there were a ton of rumors surrounding the Emperor's parentage for many years, mainly being 'he's actually the son of a low-ranked maid' (which LoZH went with) or 'he's the son of an official, Chen Shiguan, and was swapped at birth' (which a bunch of wuxia authors went with). Digging deeper than that, there's also debate over which clan Xi Fei was from---some records list her clan as 'Qian' and others 'Niohuru'. There's a chance that his mother was from some random Han family, so he had her moved to the powerful Manchu Niohuru instead. Making this worse is the fact that the records these come from are written in both Mandarin and Manchu; the Mandarin is '钱/Qian' while the Manchu is '钮钴禄/Niohuru', so we can't tell for sure.
@盧璘壽로인수5 ай бұрын
regarding Qian & Niuhoro, it was later determined that an imperial prince (generation of Yongzheng Emperor) made a clerical error by mistakening 鈕 of Niuhoru as the simplified version of 錢 hence making it appear 2 women were bestowed the title of Consort Xi (熹妃) on the same day. The prince was later punished for his stupidity.

Right I agree that it really was reckless for the Empress to confront the Empress Dowager so early like that and I think it's because of Yuan. The Empress is very patient (unlike Yinglou and Yuan who take matters into their own hands) but she's the only brain behind each scheme so far, Zhen'er her maid isn't savvy or cunning. For the Empress to find such a capable Yuan must feel refreshing that's she's not realizing he has a fast hand that will eventually leave traces leading back to her. And Yinglou is a fast learner, she used the same patient scheme on the Empress waiting for Yuan to eventually drag the Empress down. Thanks for another great recap! Yinglou slapping Shu is my favorite part of the show 😂😂

Xian is being made dumb for the sake of the plot , it quite sad.The truth is that she understimated the title of Empress Dowager in general and the notion of filial piety . Even today , in China, children are expected to obey their parents no matter what . Through history Empresses Dowager especially regents ,humiliated their son by taking their power away and they got away with it for the most part because of filial piety . Even , if it was true that she killed her biological mother when you know that is normal to separate child and mother in the harem and the status of the mother can benefit or destroy a child and thus it is why she was chosen to give Quialong a status, it would be hard for him to dismiss her .

@@lakaperse6995 This part about Xian is so hard for me to wrap my head around. Why would she have thought it'd be so simply to cause an irrepairable rift between the Emperor and the Empress Dowager when the relationship mostly has been positive, and surely she knew that the position of Empress Dowager is really next level, don't mess with them. Personally, I don't feel too much for Yuan Chunwang. He kind of force Yingluo to make promise of staying with him at the Yuanmingyuan garden, Yingluo, I guess is nice to said no, and at the time, she probably is content staying there and think about Rongyin. Now, Yuan Chunwang is using the promise he basically made it for her to revenge on Yingluo? I can understand if the revenge is in the beginning, but he was still when Mingyu killed Erqing and knows the real reason why she came back, and he still have that amount rage towards her? Dude, she does have other people in her life. It's kind of funny whenever you mentioned a bad emperor, you put picture of Ruyi's Emperor. I do agree with you, after Lady Qian risked her life for him, the previous Emperor still killed her, that's cold and cruel. This is more cruel than in the novel of Legend of Zhen Huan where the Emperor use one of the consort as human shied, and did not feel a bit of guilt. Interesting that the Emperor (in here, Yanxi Palace) aren't angry at all with his father, but I guess if a man is killing a women for chastity reason, he doesn't care by that time of standard? With the Empress and the Empress Dowager, I can understand both of their point of view on Empress's father being wrongly killed. Express Dowager is an outsider and she is more aware of the politics, while Empress saw her whole family gone one by one. I understand how it slowly will eat up her and it prevent her from maintaining her emotions. Finally, I love Qing also. She is so sweet and now she is gaining power by helping Empress Dowager, Lady Qian, and Yingluo. She is one of the sweetest concubines. As far as Xian is concerned, it's a mix of a sense of superiority and been there done that, because she thinks she's the necessary evil in a hive of sinners. Chun had genuinely done evil things, not to mention Jia 1 and Gao, so when she came across the Empress Dowagers secret it didn't occur to her that there could be anything more to it. She wanted the Empress Dowager to be evil, she came across evidence that seemed to prove it, and we get some confirmation bias as the sprinkles on the cupcake! I'm also really curious why so many of these dramas say that Zhen Huan/Xiaoshengxian adopted him instead of being her biological son. I know with the former it was due to adapting the book to be more historical, but this makes the second time Qianlong was adopted, and it's weird it happened twice xD

Xian definitely got too comfortable with victory. If she was set on taking out the dowager she should made sure to do it in one blow and kept her hands free and not blow her cover. Xian has Yuan as a her eyes and ears through the servant system then she has blackmailed Dr Zhang to half heartedly treat/kill the dowager so even though the dowager was faking she could have had him slowly exaggerate her symptoms. But by confirming the dowagers the suspicions with a fake smile and saying she will let the doctors know to do a new treatment for her; that let the dowager know not to trust the doctors and since she already knows about Yuan she knows that servants can’t be trusted she has to come up with a plan. So Xian basically let the dowager escape and that old lady ain’t never gonna forgive or forget what went down
