Thank you. My friend just inherited a vintage 1971 Peavey 300 bass amp with an additional standard head. Unfortunately he is experiencing unwanted distortion regardless of the input jack or head used. He suspects the previous owner may have modified something in order to produce a constant distortion. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts/comments on how he could get his amp working as designed, i.e., no distortion. Thanks and Semper Fi - Ken
@plaguedoctoramplification78417 ай бұрын
I would suspect the electrolytic capacitors first. Old electronics can have all kinds of issues from bad components, to things being out of tolerance or dirty.
@greyfi7 ай бұрын
Outstanding and my thoughts exactly@@plaguedoctoramplification7841 However my friend thinks the previous owner modified the amp in some fashion. To me, distortion equals an increase in voltage or current driving the power amp. As an aside I have a 1970 Fender Twin that had the old paper wrapped capacitors in the power supply. I knew one was bad but replaced all of them and it resolved the issue. In any event, thank you Sir

@@greyfiit’s possible. But I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion unless the previous owner said that’s what they did. It’s more likely there’s a problem.

I’ve notice that when I plug into the automix input…the red lights no longer light up and it seems like both channels work great and other times it’s almost like the top row works and then the bottom doesn’t. Any idea what it could be? Thanks for creating these videos on old peavey amps!

To service the power amp, you remove the speaker. The board can then be unscrewed and fed through the speaker hole.

Thank you for taking the time to post this. Apparently the resistor failure you addressed at around the 3 min mark is a problem for many of us with this amp. In my current situation, and another individual finding the same problem on their VK-112, you have saved me and others a lot of time, money, and headaches. Be sure to loop through the send/return, as it's like taking a blanket off the unit. It can cause issues with volume. This puppy screams now.

I've got a version of this amp on my bench right now and I've got a couple questions. Mine has a light bulb limiter in line with one of the speaker wires, but that doesn't seem to be present on yours. Another thing, mine is missing the 2 large white cylindrical components that are present in yours. It looks like they've either been removed or were excluded at the factory. What are they, and what is their function?

I just picked up one of these broken amplifiers, searched the web for hours, and was elated to finally find a repair video. Then, much to my disappointment, this video doesn't explain anything he's doing or how he fixed it or any tips. What a complete and utter waste of 10 minutes.
@plaguedoctoramplification7841 Жыл бұрын
To be honest, the repairs I did to the unit I had where 100% educated guessing and trial and error. Mostly error. The unit I had, had many undocumented factory changes to the schematic and was generally a terrible design. I’m also nowhere near a professional at making videos. Just a hobby. Thank you for watching.

Great video! But what is the safest way to remove the knobs on the front panel, so you can "draw" the circuit board back and out? I have already ruined one of my knobs! I see the shafts are split shafts. But it seems they're stuck there. Special tool? In my case I have to change one of the plastic inputs out, it has cracked up and gives no firm connection.

Same problem with the preamp pedal but it's worse, in the pedal it's a power supply defect, I've gotten two bad ones with the exact same defects. Sounds like bad caps from the wrong mofset or rectifier, then the opamps start oscilating. I suspect it's Covid and post-covid chaos in China, replacing unavailable parts with other parts out of spec. They sand the part numbers off the resin cased stuff or squirt them with a bodge of goo so you can't read them. Most of the consistent forum complaints emerged after US lockdown, I thinks it's recent bad batches of everything Acoustic. MF is selling lots of the inexpensive Acoustic stuff at 50%+ off, lots of open box stuff too, likely indicates high rates of returns. (And so lovely of MF to resell defective units...)

I love how the insides of these vintage solid states looked to have more in common with vintage tube amps than they do with modern solid state amps. Can almost imagine a row of tubes in place of that row of op amps or whatever they are there.

Great to see such good work, got this amp on my bench and turns out along with several bad caps, will need transistor replaced, PN: Texas Instrument R591 550 PNP transistor, I believe this transistor drives the reverb you mentioned in earlier. Any suggestions replacement / substitution for this part would be greatly appreciated.

I have built one of these and use it extensively. However, I also added in a few more high wattage resistors to share the load of power dissipation. What is that little oscilloscope by the way? Where did you get it from?
Hi there, can you share a rough schematic of how you did this? mine is smoking. I have 8 ohm 100 watt resistors laying around . I'd like to modify it to handle the 100w load from my ampeg v4. Thanks in advance for any direction you can provide.

This. The designs I see all use a high wattage chassis mount resistor. That's probably exactly why this thing fried.

@@filmmac3 I think i referred to the Jettenuator schematic when building that one. Its also based on the concept of load sharing resistors along with the l-pad. Bear in mind, I mostly have amps from 20-50 watts. And even those i hardly ever turn up past noon even with attentuators. Trying to silence a 100W tube amp cranked at full with an attenuator is like revving a car engine at full while holding down the brakes. Something's gotta give at some point.

Great information and I was able to to get this working. Nice idea moving the fuse to the secondary side. If I can make some constructive criticism, the video cuts made it difficult to follow. A continuous video with slower pacing would allow the viewer more time to absorb the info. And would probably save you some time in post. Psionic Audio channel or Uncle Doug’s site are good examples.
