Knew it was an Infiniti from the door card thumbnail!😅 They’ve been making gorgeous door cards and interiors since around 2009. Sad that they’ve gotten rid of all their sporty RWD cars, but their SUVs are nice and luxurious and extra points for keeping the naturally aspirated VQ35 around! It’s a nice niche engine.

Hi Josh! Looks enticing. I thought it was a Mazda at first, which I had years ago stolen brand new. Infinity in my area people drive like they are driving a race car . Looks nice but I do notice they don’t have that longevity of a Lexus. Do you see a 20 year old Infinity on the road?

How interesting! I actually do see a lot of older Infinitis on the road here. Mainly the FX35 and older G35/37s. There is an IPL-G that lives in my neighborhood, and a friend of mine in San Diego just sold their M45S because they wanted a more efficient car.

This QX60 isn’t actually that far behind a Toyota or Lexus in reliability. The VR35DD engine in here is the closest thing you’ll find to a 2GR-FKS V6 and JD Power ranks the QX60 at 79/100 which is only 3 behind the current RX at 83/100. I’ll also say with their new engine lineup Toyota’s reliability isn’t what it once was either, so they may be on par now too!

With Lexus losing its luxury status and downgraded to premium - now just a nicer Toyota, would you say Infiniti is going to take its spot as a luxury brand? How does Infiniti compare to Lexus and Acura (itself maybe a nicer Honda)? Is Infiniti most luxurious of the three or feels like a nicer Nissan? 🙃

I think there’s huge potential with Infiniti, and a gap in the market that they should be racing to fill. I would definitely buy this or the QX80 over an RX/TX/LX600. However they need to completely refresh the lineup with new sedans and I really hope they don’t ditch the NA V6. The interiors are top tier in the new cars (QX60, QX80) and far better than new Lexus products, and I think a lot of that has to do with Infiniti (like Genesis) needing to prove itself. Lexus is also going FULL BEV in the next 5 years so that in itself will take them out of the running for anyone who wants a premium Japanese ICE vehicle.
@jaymum23

@@joshjamescars Thank you! I want the sedans back.😢 In the past 20 years they killed the Q45 (7-series competitor) and M/Q70 (Japanese 5-series) and never replaced either. I’m worried they never will produce another sedan. Lexus themselves killed off the GS. It’s all making me feel like only the Germans will produce competitive new luxury/sport sedans going forward.

Hey Josh - willing to bet the QX60 is actually more luxury than the RX350/h it competes with. Similar price where I live but you get a V6, the interior is genuine leather, soft surfaces etc? The RX350h I drove had strips of wood on steering wheel and dash. it was nice but the options for UL trim come to 75k CAD! I mean you need to spring for UL (leather) or Executive (SA leather) around 80k to experience luxury. This is before taxes and the 4 cyl IMO is very econobox sounding. I never drove the turbo though. That Infiniti is what old school Lexus was: Wood, leather, tons of value for the money, and oh - decent looks. I'm very excited for the QX80 2025 - the interior looks worlds better than the LX600 and the digital display looks promising. What do you think of Genesis? They're killing it. The GV70/80 are the best looking in their class. The EV only GV90 is gonna be on top of the world for full size 3 row SUVs. :)
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 6 сағат бұрын
WAY more luxurious than the RX. And drives SO much better than the current RX. And yes, the RX is so expensive. This QX60 tops out at $10K less than an RX500h and although it’s not as quick, I’d take the NA V6 over it any day. The new QX80 is outstanding. I’ve gotten to see it in person and WOW. I’d take that over an LX600 any day. Especially with the engine issues the LX600 is having… Genesis is okay, the problem is that they depreciate hard and fast (worse than Mercedes), and Hyundai/Kia has had numerous engine issues over the years that don’t bode well for Genesis’ long term reliability. So, like the Germans, I think they’re good cars to lease but I wouldn’t buy one outright.

Hey Josh, Your good at this, really good. Thanks. We love our 2024 Prime even though we waited 21 months to get it !. The lack of a spare though is worrying, especially as our roads can be plagued with "road sores". Our winters always come with many freeze~thaw cycles, often several in one day. That gives us huge road damage. It's common to see cars/trucks parked at the shoulder with busted tires and rims and you'll also see vehicles with entire hub assemblies collapsed. With the regular Prius, you can source a kit from Toyota that includes a tire and rim, jack and wrench. It also includes modified foam inserts and,. a metal cover that protects that cable junction under the floor. The Prius has a threaded hole to secure the wheel. But, sadly, the kit is not compatible with the Prime (too much battery in the way). I understand that the Temporary spare from a Prius V will also work (storage-wise and functionally), with a Prius. But not with a Prime. What to do............ Also concerning for us is that at the moment, no brand has a winter (M&S), tire in the 195-50 size. We really need winter tires here as we always get deep snow.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 6 сағат бұрын
Hello! For snow or winter tires I’m always a proponent of putting them on a second set of wheels anyway for easy swap on and off (plus you don’t want salt and grime building up on your nice wheels during the winter). So I think for your need you could very easily find a set of wheels with a much more standard tire size and go that way for winter.
@TomLawlor-iq6gm
@TomLawlor-iq6gm 4 сағат бұрын
@@joshjamescars Hi Again Josh, Well now, I was just checking out the underfloor area in our Prime. No way a spare can go in there. But I took a closer look at the tires for the first time and, believe it or not, they are labeled as M&S ! They are from Toyo. I'll have to research the part number for more info as they look nothing like any snow tire I have ever seen. With regards to winter wheels; with our other two Prius cars we owned we did have studded tires on cheap steel wheels. I would change them around in our driveway (and save $200 a year). That's a clever idea to buy more "common" sized rims and winter tires, I had not thought of that (thanks). An added bonus is that we could take one of the second set along as a spare for out of town trips. There's even a third benefit. Those nice alloy rims under the hub caps would be spared winter exposure. Time for me to subscribe. Kind Regards

You can dislike Infiniti based on incorrect assumptions if you want but what you say simply isn’t true. The QX60 does above average in reliability, the VQ35DD engine is almost as bulletproof as the 2GR-FKS V6 from Toyota. And overall, per JD Power, the QX60 is only 4 points below the RX overall (79 vs 83 out of 100).

@@joshjamescars Yeah it’s a shame that the Q50/60 ruined Infiniti’s reputation for pseudo-Lexus reliability. People make assumptions based on the issues those models had with Intouch, steer by wire and turbocharged VR30 engines. The other naturally aspirated Infinitis with less electronic overload remained reliable. BMW gets a bad rep based on certain models as well (usually Ms which eat their rod bearings), but I’ve had several reliable NA Inline-6 BMWs over 100k miles.

The 2nd generation GX (such as yours) still has the same build quality (and vibe) as the 2nd gen IS- Classy, well built, high-quality, soft & cushy interior, well made buttons and handles, etc etc. Basically "true" to the *original* Lexus standards. The *new GX* is now similar to the 3rd gen IS when it was released a decade ago, and the interior was just completely the same as a Toyota Camry; Sure, 3rd gen IS was still "solid" and well built, but it *wasn't* "high-end." The _impeccable attention to detail_ was gone. Things such as the type of material used for the headliner, the carpeting, trim pieces, the type of plastic used on the *lower* door panels (that you don't really touch) etc, were *all a much higher grade* in older Lexus models like the 2nd gen GX and IS. Toyota is much more focused on profit than providing a vehicle that's a step above the real luxury vehicles they compete with. Which is sad.

I’ve seen many Lexus owners migrate over to the Genesis brand for the exact thing you mentioned. Lexus is no longer putting luxury as its priority, they’ve become more of a sport car division. One Lexus owner said this exact thing, “Genesis is what Lexus used to be.” Watching you dissect this SUV made me realize that people from Lexus are not exaggerating regarding their dislike of the new vehicles being released. Don’t get me started on the reliability because as of right now Tundra is facing recalls and now I’m seeing a few Toyota Camry’s from 2020-21 4 cylinder engines having issues… Then, there is the plastic. The plastic in the GX550 resembles a Chrysler/Dodge grade of plastic.

Hello! Yes, Lexus is definitely shifting its priorities, but it’s not to focus on being a sports car manufacturer. It’s because this is their last round ever of ICE vehicles. You nailed a lot of what I have felt about this truck without even having driven it. it just isn't there for a Lexus product and seems more Toyota premium quality than Lexus quality. I currently have an 2022 RX 350 Luxury and it seems vastly nicer inside at $22k less than the current GX luxury. Regarding your comment about the different levels of sound dampening between premium, Overtrain, and Luxury trims - I reached out to Lexus and got a response that all trims have the same amount of sound dampening and vibration reduction materials. On Ih8mud (or another forum) I saw a thread where someone identified the differences between GX and LC and one of them was that the GX has sound dampening glass (or whatever the term is) on all windows and LC only has the windshield.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 9 сағат бұрын
Hello! Could not agree more. I really think this new generation of their cars is a downgrade. If you haven’t driven a new RX, it’s far better than this GX but even still, I see a lot of the same cost cutting in the new RX versus your 2022. That RX was one of my most favorite, the new one is one of my least favorite. As for the sound dampening note, that’s really disappointing if they’re all this loud. And odd to me that they wouldn’t put more into the Luxury. Although, I’ve also been told by many people that the luxury’s 22-inch wheels also cause you to feel every little pebble on the road, so maybe that’s just “luxury” in looks, not actual ride comfort.

So I have been watching your videos and really feel the new Lexus models are all question marks in terms of reliability. Lexus reliability can be claimed on all their old models which is why it is the perfect time to buy slightly used Lexus right now. Totally different class but that is why I am going with the IS500 for the quality, reliability and V8 before they redesign it in the next couple of years. I think in 10 years we will look back as this is a step backwards and hopefully they get it right in 3-4 years.

Hello! You can’t go wrong with the IS500! It will definitely be the last of its kind. Meanwhile, Lexus has already stated that it intends to be a full BEV automaker by 2030 so IMO they’re just phoning in this last generation of ICE and hybrid vehicles while they focus on the BEV portfolio of the next decade. So this isn’t the end of this new Lexus, it’s just the very beginning of their transition into a very different company. It’s also why we see Toyota vehicles (like Crown Signia) getting more premium as that’s what will take over for Lexus owners who want to stick with Toyota.

I have so many questions. How does one "force" the gas engine to run (aside from depleting the battery)? Once your initial battery charge (from being plugged in) depletes to a certain level, does it just revert to hybrid, where power is being put back into the battery via regenerative braking and perhaps the IC engine? I also wonder how Toyota manages warming up the ICE. Suppose I leave home for a 50 mile trip. I start from home with a near full charge, driving at urban speeds as I leave the subdivision. I reach the interstate after 10 miles, so I can reach that easily on battery alone. Some miles down the interstate, the battery is depleted to the point where the ICE needs to fire up. Unless the vehicle manages this in some way (or I do it manually), the engine will need to fire up, dead cold, but now at 60-70 mph. Seems like you'd want to get the fluids up to operating temp before going from dead cold to freeway speeds or a heavy work load on the ICE. Does the vehicle manage this, or does the driver? If it is the driver, I'm wary about how this is going to work. Lots of people in "regular" cars fail to "go easy" on the accelerator while the car is near dead cold (although at least most situations allow a tiny bit of warm-up before needing to "mash it".) But we were always told that most engine wear happens at/near start-up when fluids are cold. Firing up an ICE that hasn't operated for weeks (perhaps normal commute is all within battery range) at 70 mph seems like a bad idea. Yeah, ethanol can attack some of the elastomers in the fuel system for one thing (wreaking havoc on lawn mowers that sit all winter). While the ethanol free is more expensive, you get a little return via the higher energy density. I think you gain 1% in energy density for every 1% of ethanol reduction. (So, you might get about 10% better gas mileage with ethanol free vs 10% ethanol.) What intrigues me about the RAV4 Prime is the power/acceleration vs the hybrid RAV4, and apparently, they've added extra sound insulation (maybe even thicker glass). Consumer Reports raves (RAV's? :)) about them. Lots of problems if your vehicle never gets the ICE system fully warmed up. I guess the modern exhaust systems can tolerate short trips better than the old mild steel systems (where the short trips allegedly never allowed the whole system to heat up enough to drive off the moisture, and they'd rust out quickly.) How do they heat and cool the passenger compartment? If you aren't running ICE, the heater core wouldn't do anything, and if there IS a heater core, the fluids are going to stagnate if you go long periods without flow. Lots of interesting situations with the PHEV, as it quietly enables repeated short term trip issues.

Hello! I’m going to try to answer all your questions as best I can but please reply if I miss anything. To force the car to run in hybrid mode, you simply use the drive mode selector. There are: EV mode which runs the car in electric only range until it’s depleted, HV mode which forces it to run as a standard Toyota hybrid, and Auto EV/HV mode in which the car can decide for itself what the most energy efficient mode to run in is at any given time. So you have total control over what energy source you’re using (your gas tank or energy in the battery). As for the question of the engine cold firing on the freeway, it’s not speed that matters but RPMs. You don’t want to go full 6K RPM from cold but the Rav4 Prime rarely ever needs to rev its engine that hard because the electric drive motors are so powerful that the engine doesn’t have to work nearly as hard as it does in a standard car to move the vehicle forward. There’s a lot less stress put on the engine in hybrid vehicles in general which is partly how these cars are so efficient. Those larger electric drive motors are also what enables the Prime’s 5.5 second 0-60 time. Electric motors are incredibly powerful especially since these have to be big enough to run the car all on their own. So then combine them with the gas engine and that’s how we get a Rav4 that’s faster than a base Porsche Macan! Also, do keep in mind that the drivetrain is LITERALLY the same as what’s in a standard Prius just with a bigger battery. That means the basic architecture is about 26 years old and Toyota hybrids are some of the most dependable cars on the road and many have 300K+ miles on the original power-split device and engine. Regarding HVAC, the RAV4 Prime, like many EVs, uses a heat pump to heat the car. No need to use engine and exhaust heat to warm the passenger compartment. That’s so old school. Modern technology has solved that problem. Oh and finally yes you’re right! The RAV4 Prime does get acoustic laminated glass on the windshield and front driver and passenger windows and it’s built in Japan which I always find means a higher quality vehicle in general. The other things you mention in your comment (and I mean no disrespect) around “we were always told that…” are based on some outdated beliefs that may have been true in the 80s and 90s but it’s been 25+ years since then and engine technology has really advanced to the point where we can have these kinds of mixed power vehicles that run flawlessly and that are designed to operate under/in different conditions than a gas engine from the 90s. Check out this video for more on how the Prime PHEV drivetrain works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKnIpJ99pcqdobssi=Wjt3-kBiNPbrxZhZ

@@joshjamescars Thanks Josh. I'm going to have to watch more videos on this. I've been focused more on hybrids. It makes sense that they took EV tech on things like the heat pump, but I wasn't sure how much of the ICE critter was built in versus the EV critter. Kind of a mix and match, but I'd trust Toyota to do it well. I read an article last week that was kind of the flip side, saying PHEV's are "the worst of both worlds", because you have two power sources, and with the "modern" charging infrastructure (compared to 10-12 years ago), you don't "need" the ICE safety net. So in his opinion, you have a baby EV that has to lug around an ICE. (Funny, they weigh in the same ballpark though). Good to know on the ability to run in the different modes. I wasn't sure re the gearing, and what RPM you would be turning at 70. Yeah, I was raised in the old school.Took "Power Mechanics" in high school, and learned all about 2 stroke and 4 stroke cycle engines. That's where we were encouraged to respect the machinery, let the fluids come up to temp before you drive it hard, etc. I realize tolerances and lubricants are much better now, but wasn't sure on oil distribution. (That used to be a "point" - that cold engines have most of the oil down in the crankcase, and it needs a brief time to get it circulating.) I choose to drive "easy" until things are warmer, unless there is a need. I've put over 100K on cars from the 80's, 00's and '10's, and no failures. New cars typically had recommended break in periods to "properly seat the rings", etc. I think tolerances are so much tighter and consistent that "break in" might be a relic (although I've seen recommendations for "bedding in" your new disc brakes.". Enjoy your Prime. I'll check out the link. Thanks. I'm always eager to get more tech info. So much content is geared to those who don't really care how and why things work, and that's fine, everyone has their "bag". My wife just wants to get in and drive. She had a second gen Prius, and it was na engineering feat. I would literally chuckle at the gas pump after we'd driven 225 miles and I'd put in 4.8 gallons to top it off.

Appreciate all your videos on the RAV4 Prime. We’re currently shopping and having a tough time justifying something so new feeling with the PHEV powertrain. Can you provide your insight on the long term value of a this vehicle over five or 10 years?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 4 күн бұрын
Totally understand what you’re saying but the thing to know about Toyota’s PHEV drivetrain is that it’s literally exactly the same as what’s in a Prius just with a larger battery. So although the powertrain may feel new because of the EV driving range, the underlying drivetrain architecture the RAV4 Prime is built on is actually about 26 years old (the Prius came out in 1997). So the long term reliability and dependability is rock solid and thus so is the resale and depreciation. Which is why it’s so hard to get a Rav4 Prime even four years on. People want the proven old technology and are willing to pay for it. I can still sell mine for more than we paid for it and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Another big draw for the Prime is that all you need is a standard household outlet to make it work for you. EVs are a totally different story, those are rapidly advancing and thus even a current model will depreciating like a rock. You also need to drive it totally differently, plan your routes differently, have an actual EV charger installed in your home, etc., etc., etc. But also, to your point about value, if you don’t really care about or really want the EV only driving range I think the regular Rav hybrid is a great choice too.

@@joshjamescars Do you have a mf degree in this shit or whuttt? I love that explanation because that’s exactly how it seems to myself and I imagine many other interested consumers, that PHEV is something entirely *mechanically new/different* But when you say that it’s the same ol trusted tech from the Prius, that makes things sound much more reliable. I haven’t been able to find that fact throughout all the research I’ve done on this vesicle. That makes me feel much better about the reliability. Lastly, I don’t think this is something I’ve heard discussed anywhere but I’m very interested in knowing what insiders like yourself think about the FUTURE. My definition of that is 2035. Here in Canada, that’ll be the end of new ICE vehicle sales. Sooooo, a huge consideration in our purchase of the Prime is, 10 or so years from now when it’s a mandate for consumers to move forward, what happens to PHEV sales? Also, I expect by that time, the developments made on battery technology will hopefully make it much more affordable to replace a battery pack, though we will only be at around 160,200-200,000 kms deep and at the end of the Toyota manufacturer battery warranty. That was a lottt, but thanks again for anything you feel to share. I’ve only discussed this vehicle with sales people who will tell you anything you want to hear. And also on one Facebook group which is somewhat catty.

@nahoumabara3712 Haha nope, no degree just obsessed with cars and how they work! Here are two videos you should watch to understand the similarities. First, this is an overview of the standard (non-plug-in) Toyota Hybrid System: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2Kuf36efNRnmZIsi=HXkbszGL8gvw7vNC And second, this is the second part of the series which discusses the Prime plug in drivetrain and you can see how similar it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKnIpJ99pcqdobssi=Wjt3-kBiNPbrxZhZ As for where cars go in the future, to be honest I don’t think these mandates to go all EV are realistic. I was just reading that the average age of a new car today in the US is 14 years. So if new gas powered vehicle sales end in 2035, we’ll still have gas cars way into the 2050s. I honestly don’t understand how these governments think people will be able to survive with EVs when the infrastructure is so far from being ready. The electric grids here in Texas have trouble supporting our load today much less with 93% more electric cars (our take rate on EVs is around 7% of new car sales, I think). I also believe the ban on gas powered cars is also only new car sales. People will still be able to buy used gas cars, and just knowing how slow public infrastructure is in adapting to changes, I foresee a lot of people going to buy a used car if that’s the only way they can get a gas vehicle. OR, if the bans end up being on ALL gas car sales, then in 2034 you’ll likely have a HUGE boom in people wanting to buy a gas car, and so you could sell a Rav4 Prime for big money then. Personally I know the end of gas cars is coming and I think now is the time to buy. As far as I’m concerned the end of GOOD gas cars (like my Lexus GX460 with its bulletproof V8) has already happened. That’s why we bought the GX460 and our 2024 V6 Camry too. Both have now gone away and the replacements are okay, but not great. And we will be hanging onto those plus our Rav Prime for as long as we can. I really hope to be driving the GX 50 years from now as a classic. That all said, I do hope that we succeed in moving away from ICE cars because we need cleaner air and more environmentally friendly vehicles. But I think both the cars and the public infrastructure needs more than 10 years to mature before we can fully jettison the ICE vehicle. The Prius has been around since 97 and I don’t really feel like we got to mass EV adoption until around 2017 so that took 20 years. EVs are well on their way but IMO 2045 would be a more realistic target for 100% adoption.

@@joshjamescars I’m sure all your fam/friends love to pick your brain when their turn comes around to shop the very annoying automotive market. You weren’t the first video I found in this little alley way of the RAV4 Prime on YT but definitely one of the most informative and a channel that I’m happy to spend my time watching. I don’t think you’re far off from what one of the sales guys told me which is that he heard/expects the price for Hybrids/PHEV’s to only go up and soon too. Which makes sense from a business point of view when manufacturers literally don’t have anything stopping them, and the demand is gaining. We’re feeling a lot of push back on this decision but I want to take advantage of Canada’s iZEV program and the $5000 rebate which will allow us to hopefully go for the full spec XSE and technology package. It’s also looking like we’ll only have this opportunity until mid 2025 or until the funding for the program runs out. I wonder if you’ve heard any of the rumblings that Toyota won’t be coming out with a redesign for the 2025 model year, but I do hope they remain competitive by supporting the product with software updates over time. Especially when it comes to the infotainment. I wish there was something like a parking assist but overall not many complaints it seems. Not sure about the weather in Texas, but I’d like to know how your winter performance/mileage is. Or if you’ve found a plug-in block heater to be advantageous. I think it sounds healthier for the battery system during the cold months. Thanks for your answers, I’ll be sure to watch those two videos you’ve linked.

@@joshjamescars Although I don’t think you’re wrong regarding the rate of EV adoption, I’ll provide some context of Canada’s plan to do so: “The Government of Canada is committed to achieve 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035 for all new light-duty vehicles, including interim targets of at least 20% by 2026 and at least 60% by 2030, as announced in Canada's 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan.” (Transport Canada). So, I assume those interim targets will make the goal more a possibility to achieve within the longer timeframe.

I think you nailed it when you said that this GX is tailored more toward the people that are off-road-focused. A lot of your criticisms may actually be good for off-roading. A tan suede headliner will get filthy loading things in and out, camping, etc. Plastic is easier to clean and replace when they inevitably get scratched and dirty when camping, etc.

I 100% agree and that’s also why I feel like this has the wrong badge. All of my criticisms would also be more than acceptable in a mainline Toyota branded vehicle (which could come with pricing maybe $5-10K lower). Luxury off-roader has always been something of an oxymoron IMO.

We have something similar in the PH called Petron Blaze. It’s 100 RON and Euro 6 compliant. What would be the euro rating if that?

Hello! I have to admit my knowledge on Euro compliance is a bit limited-it was my understanding that cars were compliant or not, based on their emissions, versus the petrol itself. I’ll have to do some googling on that! The Rav itself is such a low emissions vehicle (and zero emissions when running in EV mode) that I know it is fully Euro 6 complaint but not sure about non-ethanol gas.

All gas should be ethanol free. Ethanol costs more and causes about 10%+ Worse gas mileage. Ethanol will gum up your lawn mower carburetors as well. It's a horrible product.

Hi Josh. Another informative video. Do you think you could do one on non plug in hybrids vs plug in with the gas mileage for each. We have a RX450h. It is really interesting how they function. How the battery recharges itself. Again, thank you for your non biased opinion as an actual owner.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 4 күн бұрын
Hello! I will definitely think about how to do that. The thing with plug in hybrids is that it’s almost impossible to actually quantify gas mileage down to a single number because there are so many variables. For example, if I did a 40 mile drive in the Prime, my gas mileage would entirely depend on how much of that I chose to do in EV mode. I could do like 80mpg if I drove 30 of those miles in EV range and 10 miles in hybrid mode. But if I did only 5 miles in EV range and the other 35 in gas hybrid mode it would probably be closer to 35mpg. And when the battery is depleted in a Rav Prime or RX450h+ (plug in RX), then it falls back to being a standard Rav or RX hybrid that’s just a little bit heavier.
