There are good portion of toyota owners who barely do oil changes let alone cooling system service. The ones that do fail there's probably high chance the owner(s) neglected cooling system maintenance. I know a guy who has 2012 ML350 with 100k miles. Asked him when he serviced coolant or transmission oil changed. His answer was 'never'. I cringed at that. Good chunk of toyota owners are the same way. They think it's a 'toyota' so they think they can only do oil changes to get to 300k miles

Thank you for posting this - regarding AMD, I watch him regularly and was very surprised when he posted the video on the UR series. It actually makes little sense as he himself purchased a gx460 for his wife recently AND had has heaped loads of praise on cars like the LC500, with the UR series as well. Anyone can watch his previous videos on these and other UR equipped cars to see for themselves. So, why the alarmist video now? Why not just post that UR engines need to be maintained properly and leave it at that? My guess is that he got a lot of flak from Toyota or their reps on his lukewarm take on their new engine offerings. As you highlighted very accurately in a previous video, Toyota has been de-contenting their cars for years and now are getting worried that their rep for reliability, which has allowed them to charge higher prices than competitors, is under serious threat. They just have cut too many corners, and they now have an army of KZbinrs telling the general public that it’s all ok. AMD knows that Toyota would never bring back the previous-gen UZ v8s (as he recommends in the video) so he’s basically saying that the current V8 is not so great and it’s ok to buy the new TTV6, which is just not true at all.
@theunown19122 ай бұрын
@@CeeJay591 This actually makes the most sense. It also emphasizes how disingenuous he is.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
One thing we also have to remember is that AMD is one of many creators who lives off of his KZbin revenue. It paid for the shop, the GX, etc. and when you are dependent on your revenue, it means you have to keep people watching and I suspect that’s why a lot of his videos are very click-baity. Doom and gloom and controversy are what drive people to watch so saying UR V8s are failing will get you a lot more attention than saying hey don’t forget to change your coolant. But you also bring up a good point too that he is one who relies upon having a relationship with Toyota for press vehicles so there could definitely be an element of pleasing corporate going on!

@@joshjamescars Hey Josh, thanks for responding - just want to state again that I really like AMD and also David from Automotive Press, 2 youtubers who produce really great Toyota/Lexus content. But they, like many Toyota fans on KZbin, are under pressure to sell this new generation of cars and SUVs. Look at the new GX550 - almost all current GX460 owners are just not impressed with the package - cheap-feeling interior, higher price, package options (the Mark Levinson is now available in the upper trims only), etc. Yet we hear over and over how much improved the GX550 is and how its worth the premium price. Also, about that massive engine recall - most folks are focusing on the Tundra, but could imagine buying a 130k LX600 and now face an engine recall and re-install? I was shocked to hear that the LX was also subject to the recall - this vehicle is fully made in Japan and can be optioned to be the most expensive vehicle sold by Lexus. You'd think that they would have additional quality control checks on this car prior to delivery to customers. But, not a peep about this on the popular youtube channels.

@CeeJay591 Yes! You’re spot on with all of this especially the under pressure to sell part… I would absolutely hate my life if I had to be under that same kind of pressure… which is a shame too because KZbin has become (more than less) an advertising platform.

Hello Josh. I started watching your videos because you are an actual owner who seemed sincere about your experience. Some of these KZbinrs are questionable. I hope that in the future there won’t be a litigation as a result of false info or defaming a manufacturer to put a stop to it. I was not aware there was a gasket issue on the GX460. It was good to see based on your research the number that was sold between 2010 and 2023 of the GX. Thank you for the informative video.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
Hi Joann! Personally I don’t think there is an issue (or rather, it has not been proven to be a wide scale issue). It seems like poor maintenance will lead to issues down the line (at 200K and beyond), but IMO that’s true of any vehicle out there.

It should be noted by those in the second hand market, most buyers of luxury cars are not "car people". Some don't even know that oil changes are required (this case was a Mercedes owner, the car died at 2 years). I have become very skeptical of AMD recently, I do not believe he is as excellent a source for understanding new Lexus and Toyota's, his knowledge seems excellent about those he maintained during his dealerships days.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
100% at most luxury car buyers are not car people, and most of these lifted modified cars were bought second hand off lease from one of the original owners who aren’t car people. That’s exactly why I want to know the history of that GX that was on the lift. Most people who buy a GX new aren’t the ones doing that LOL. As for AMD… I feel he often wants to speak as an engineer which isn’t his background. It would be like me trying to speak as a software coder at work which I am most definitely not LOL.

Good video. I have an 08 Tundra with 230,000 miles on it. Do my own oil changes and other services. Never touched the transmission. I don't drive it hard. You hear all sorts of things like the valve springs breaking, etc. My truck still runs great. So good that I couldn't bring myself to buying a new truck a couple years ago even though I could afford it and write it off through my business. Boy did I dodge a bullet there. So we bought a GX460 and, like I told you before, I just love it. And my wife (because it's her car really) is coming around to it. Having managed a fleet of vehicles in the past as part of my job for a company I worked for, maintenance is everything.

Excellent video! I am vastly changing how often I do coolant flushes because of the valley plate leak and the problem with the gasket that is not sacrificial. To me, a very robust metal gasket in an aluminum engine that then gets to be sacrificed, makes a lot of sense as an eventual consequence of this set up. Amd mentioned coolant acidity and the pressures. Well, I can do my best with the acidity, the pressures are not really a factor that I would wish to modify. I just don’t know if every 2 or 3 years is the schedule for coolant flush that I will do, any evidence that folks have would be welcome. I do my own maintenance with OEM liquids, so it would not be very expensive, probably add 500-600$ per decade of maintenance, which for a 65$ k vehicle is very small price. Also wanted to agree with GX not being cheap, it has so many liquids and transmission parts, they all add up in the maintenance.
@joshjamescarsАй бұрын
The advice I always give people is to do whatever maintenance they want to do at whatever interval will allow them to sleep well at night. If people want to change their oil every 1,000 miles that’s fine. If you want to do coolant every couple years, by all means especially since you’re doing it yourself. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what anyone says on the internet, it’s your money, your time, and your vehicle.

So I'm back...lets start: Data... gives you the truth, like you said numbers don't lie. Each car reviewer on KZbin have a purpose (that's why I do not watch majority of them), AMD gives me the mechanical review that I like, Savagegeese gives me the humor/sarcasm/blunt and engineering/performance(Mark is a blunt/no filter tech and Jack is engineer) and Topher's gives me the handling and now you the data dude. The rest of the GURLS they are just like dealerships: salesmen. Reading some of he comments abt AMD and his POV abt the mechanical aspects of the new Toyotas/Lexus being outdated, for me I think He knows what he's talking abt since he deals with Toyota/Lexus daily and I bet he gets well informed of the" new "Toyota engines(since he owns a 2000's LS430/Gx460 2023 and a Tundra edition 1794 2024 ). What people fail to realize is that Japanese manufactures are very conservative special Toyota they do not change their ways of doing like Korean and Eurotrash brands and when they change something that folks are not familiar with, the troll bots and fake news outlets go in....continue

As someone who’s subscribed to both this and AMD’s channel, and have seen this and the UR video AMD made, my take away from his video was: “I’m seeing a trend, keep up with your maintenance if you want these things to last >200K” I believe where he might have spooked the herd was when he said don’t bring back the V8. That was somewhat alarmist, I agree. Overall he meant well.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
My issue is with what you call out there “I’m seeing a trend” and a trend is a discernible pattern of event repetition emerging in a master dataset. That’s why I want the data to understand HOW frequently this is happening (across the board) and operating conditions that need to be in place to hit the point of failure. If it’s purely maintenance based, that’s avoidable. But if they will fail even with good maintenance, that’s another issue. Also, most emails I got were people freaked out about if his video meant that their UR-V8 head gasket was also going to fail, hence the need for data on failure rate-not that he said the V8 should go away. On a personal note, I honestly don’t think we should bring back ANY naturally aspirated, non-hybridized V8 because they aren’t good for the environment and electrified engines are far better in both power delivery and efficiency.
@randy749892 ай бұрын
If you watched his video intently, his takeaway was that you should over-maintain those UR engines. In other words, change the oil every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever occurs first. That metal head gasket has flaws and oil/gasoline dilution will degrade that gasket seal over time. In addition, the one he was working on had over 200,000 miles on it, so it was not a new engine by any means. All of those listed vehicles that Josh showed are luxury vehicles and you should over-maintain them unless you have money to burn or trade them in all the time.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
It’s actually the coolant that passes thru the gasket that will degrade the sealant on the gasket that separates the coolant tube from the cylinders because the coolant is what’s corrosive. Or at least that’s what was seen on that Land Cruiser. That said, I still want more comprehensive data on these failures from his shop and from Toyota in general. We ought to know if these aren’t only occuring at 200K.

Great Reporting
@steveh5452 ай бұрын
I hear you....but i go to quick oil change places. What am i missing? When i car shop for used cars, I micro-analyze the Carfax reports.Shocking how many nice cars have huge gaps in their service history. Doesn't meant there are huge gaps in services, just no evidence. I use Christian Brothers for stuff, but they never report (very annoying). I use quick lube places precisely because they do. I'd rather see "take 5" every 3-5K on a vehicle 100K on the clock, than Dealer service every 20K. You are 100% correct about knowing the vehicles history, but it's really hard to find cars (any cars) that get frequent/documented services. Honestly, the next used car i buy will probably be CPO, just because I have no faith in most carfax reports. I still run them, doesn't hurt. Just to be clear, i have an 04 LC with about 320K on it, and my wife's 17 GX, has about 115K. I'm not taking a 2024 Range Rover to jiffy lube. (it will be 15 yrs before i could afford a used 2024 RR.). Thanks as always for the great content.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
Quick lube places aren’t necessarily bad but not all of them are great about doing multi-point inspections and of course their technicians don’t specialize in the brand. Also, some manufacturers require or recommend certain things being done while the car is in for service (software updates, cleaning camera lenses for ADAS, etc.) and those may not get done by the quick lube place. Also, do be aware that CPO doesn’t guarantee any kind of quality, it just means that Toyota/lexus will warranty the car for a certain period of time. It’s a way to make people feel more comfortable buying a used car. A lease that was driven hard and poorly maintained can still be certified if it meets certain criteria, it is less than a certain age, etc. So even with CPO, you need to check the maintenance history and have it inspected by an independent mechanic.
@steveh5452 ай бұрын
@@joshjamescars agree. A CPO just means I have some type of a warranty. Although with all of the electronics nowadays, I’m not sure how much of that is truly covered.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
@steveh545 With Toyota certified, I think you need to look for “Platinum CPO” to get all the coverages. “Gold CPO” is the lower tier I believe. Or gold vs. silver. They’ve made their programs so complicated with multiple tiers of CPO.
