I see this alot. With this specific tensioner Now anyone reading this. This guy is legit. I just found his channel. But if you see anyone doing the timing sets on a 3.6 junkastar and THEY DONT REMOVE THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE OIL OAN COVER. Then they are half assing this job. This job consist of 4 chains. 99% of shops and especially “KZbin” mechanics are lazy hacks and they only change the top 3. Sure it sucks to spend half a day removing that insanely bad design timing cover only to realize you have to now drop the whole lower section because dodge thought it was a good idea to drive the oil pump off the crank and not give you enough room to remove the lower gear and chain. But hey. That’s life in a garage. Get over and do yourself and the customer justice and remove the lower half. That chain stretches just like the rest of the them You sir are a real mechanic and deserve all the likes and subs 👍🏼

Just one thing you are ignoring you gotta remove the bolt in the back of the intake camshaft, for propper timing

I don't think it "has" to but it is a lot easier and this subframe along w alot of newer stuff is simple to pull. And of its electric instead of power steering you make less of a mess and get it done quicker

Anytime it's a all silicone cover, i prefer the engine to be out. And if you are doing broken motor mounts the labor time can cover you.

These engines aren't worth fixing. Get a new one or fill it with motor honey and trade it on a Four Runner or mini van, both are better off road.

lol. Well I agree about the 4 runner. Idk about that mini van. I work on this junk everyday. My wife is a big Jeep fan. Bought her jk brand new. Maintenance the hell out of it. 2,100 miles after the warranty. Catastrophic engine failure. She now has a hemi swapped jk. I try and tell people this. If you love Jeeps and plan to upgrade the crap out of them and keep them for years and years. When the 3.6 fails. And it will. Just Ls or hemi swap it and save yourself the headache. In 20 years of ownership the money works out the same 90% of the time I have one in the shop now I forget the year. It’s 80ish. But super freaking clean and nice and he did a Toyota 22re swap years ago. Built the motor a little bit and a small turbo. Way more power than it needs. And one of the smoothest cleanest running old jeeps I have ever seen. And it’s not at my shop for engine repair lol. Runs flawlessly. First one I have ever seen with a Toyota motor but it was a smart move!

Same thing happened to my JK with about 160k miles. Rattle upon decal showed up one day, and a tear down found the same broken tensioner.

Yep. I see these same tensioners fail often. Either like this or the plunger just gets stuck. Idk why just this one tensioner. I love jeeps and especially. Jk”s. But the 3.6 has some strange issues sometimes lol

@@kennetholiva641did you figure out the cam sensor code? These love throwing that can sensor code. That indexing wheel is magnetic and I have seen them pick up a lot of metal dust and mess with the codes. I have also seen them literally move causing you to scratch your head till it bleeds lol. I had one both rings on one bank moved slightly. I checked double and tripple checked the timing. Then realized it had to be the rings. They say your not suppose to but I realigned then and tacked them into place because the customer dint want to buy new cams. And I don’t blame him lol. It’s been fine since Jeep and there check engine lights pays my mortgage lol

The tech manual says install cam sprockets in the position you remove them implying that the proper install position is necessary. The sprockets have a notch on them as well. Do you know proper position to install vvt csm sprockets?

So did you rebuild it or replace motor. Bad valve is what I've been reading. Some people get lucky and go 400k miles so weird random motors go bad. Burning oil sounds like bad rings though. Did you tear it all down and find the issue? Hopefully better lifters are available and valves.
