I love strats and teles more than anything , my first guitar was a humbucker guitar and im currently modding it to sound the best it can with humbuckers, i dont think theres a point in trying to make it sound like something its not, so a hunky humbucker sound its what it needs to be at best
@EdgeofBreakup7 күн бұрын
Everyone has different goals in mind. I have many humbucker guitars, so I like to shoot for different things.
@losangulos3 күн бұрын
@ i would do that too having several, whats your favourite for coil split without jeopardizing the classichumbucker sound (when not split of course) ?
@EdgeofBreakup3 күн бұрын
I don’t actually coil split a lot, but something I have done on custom builds with Frank Brothers and other companies is to place a Lollar Firebird in the middle position as a third pickup, with two full size Humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions, then wire the middle Firebird to a blender potentiometer so you can bring in the single coil strattiness but with no hum! Also make sure to put Emerson treble bleeds on all your volumes, helps you thin out the tone without losing top end 👌 Check out 22:56 here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnfOn316irRllcUsi=VvGbpW3zPHPu3ThV

I see your A string bridge saddle is fully forward - as was mine (same guitar). I needed another half a mm to get the intonation perfect so had to reverse the saddle. Interesting to see yours is on the cusp also.
@EdgeofBreakup7 күн бұрын
Good eye, this guitar was ridiculously hard to get in tune, intimated, and stay in tune! I seriously learned how to work on guitars from this SG! Haha. Replaced tuners, nut, tailpiece, saddles, wiring kit, added treble bleeds…
@nigelsmith7217 күн бұрын
@@EdgeofBreakup you did a stunning job, if it plays like it sounds (and it apparently does) then it's a keeper.
@EdgeofBreakup7 күн бұрын
Thank you, I had my doubts for a while there! Changing the nut and the tuners were probably the best choice because if you’re not well intonated nothing else matters - but of course, changing the pickups and wiring to Emerson Custom did the most to improve the tone 🔥

Hey man love this video and glad to have discovered your channel. High quality videos that I can tell lots of effort was put into. Surprised you’re not getting thousands more views! I just got one of these a couple days ago (the earlier grey version) and I’m trying to get used to it/get it dialed in. For comparison, I’ve been using the Strymon El Capistan for 2+ years, and I’m trying to pick one or the other. A couple things that I’m struggling with on the BED is the preamp “record level” actually delaying the whole signal of what I’m playing once it’s turned up. This was a big reason for my interest in the pedal because I’ve been using the Xotic EP booster with my El Cap to achieve that sound, but would be nice to have that in one pedal. So not sure if that’s just an issue with my pedal in particular or the design, but doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me. It’s also quite noisy when cranked. Also when the bypass is turned off, it kills the delays right away, whereas the El Cap allows the repeats to fade out naturally. The self oscillating also only works on my BED when I tap it once and not when it’s held down, again not sure if this is an issue with just my pedal (which I bought used) or if it’s just the design on the earlier version. Haven’t explored too much of the other settings other than the “1”, EP-3 setting which is really what I’m interested in, for the Neil Young, Gilmour, and Page style tones. To me, it seems like the BED does do the EP-3 sound a bit better than the El Cap, but the El Cap seems a bit easier to use, and slightly more versatile, but maybe that’s just because I’m used to it too! Let me know your thoughts on the earlier version compared to the newer black one, if there’s even any differences between the two.
@EdgeofBreakup9 күн бұрын
Hey there! Thanks a ton for the kind words. I wish I was getting hundreds of thousands of views but honestly just playing great stuff is its own reward :) I have only ever had this version of the BED, which allows tap tempo with the CB Tap switch, I believe the older versions of the BED did not feature any tap tempo at all. Off the top of my head I think that’s the only difference between the versions, but I could definitely be wrong. I did not notice any difference in the amount of delay time depending upon how much preamp I had dialed in - the preamp can definitely get pretty overpowering and cloudy which might lead to you missing the tone of the first or second repeat with a shorter delay time, though. And yes, the preamp can make noise. It’s not something that I would use cranked, but rather for imparting some flavor. The main reason I don’t love the Strymon El Cap is because it has modes labeled ABC and it’s hard for me to remember what each one does… I think they could’ve done much better in that regard. I’m not usually into delays that have preamps in them because I like getting my gain from the amp and placing my delays nice and clean into the effects loop of my Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander after the amp head but prior to speaker cab. The BED was fun to experiment with though, and I thought it did that thing pretty well. If you’re having issues with your unit, I would contact Catalinbread and see if you can get their help with it. I don’t recall any symptoms like what you’re describing… All the best, Sean
@maxmarkowitz9 күн бұрын
Cool thanks for the quick response! Yes the El Cap definitely has some quirky features that I don’t like either, one of them being the secondary features that I can never remember what they’re set to, and yes the A/B/C is kind of confusing too, the BED is much simpler in that sense. El Cap also sounds more “digital” to me, where the BED has more of a warmer feel. I think I will continue using the EP booster in conjunction with the BED for that extra preamp. Though I’ve never played an original EP-3, they’ve been notorious for being noisy too, so part of that might just be captured in the recreation. A wise man once said, “An Echoplex is like an old drunk guy at the bar who wants to start a fight.”

You don't get a louder,clearer tone by turning the knobs on your guitar. In fact all the knobs on the guitar are subtractive, meaning you only subtract content and not amplify like an amplifier.
@EdgeofBreakup15 күн бұрын
Thanks, but I don’t need you to explain guitar to me. 😂 There are plenty of pedals out there (particularly fuzz) that get more clear and defined with your volume knob down to varying degrees if you have the right pots and treble bleeds installed. Have a nice day.

Im curious how the blend works in comparison to the "Gilmour Switch Mod". I just rewired a Strat with Fender CS54's, a tone for Neck/Middle, separate tone for bridge, and a toggle switch to add the neck to any pickup position. I like it a lot, but im curious how different it is to blend in the neck instead of just adding it in full strength. Still looking for that perfect Strat pickup for my tastes though. The 54's sound fantastic, but are quite noisy, especially due to not having the middle a RWRP.
@EdgeofBreakup22 күн бұрын
Great question! It makes a huge difference to be able to blend in just as much as you want - I swear by the Emerson Custom Blender Kit! Also, using the kit means you don’t need to aesthetically or visually mod the Strat in any way with an added switch, since you just use the secondary tone knob for it… and to be honest I never use the tone knob on neck or middle anyways, and rarely use it on the bridge - so I definitely do not need two tone knobs! Emerson’s parts are superior for the tone I want to hear, and they sound great with this pickup set as well as others I’ve used over the years! Generally speaking I’m not a fan of stock regular or custom shop pickups from fender or Gibson, I always replace them first thing and upgrade the wiring as well. Always appreciate you watching! Here’s the link to the kit which also includes the incredible Emerson treble bleed: emersoncustom.com/products/s5b-blender-5-way-strat-prewired-kit?sca_ref=6282128.5O9h8BhMpG Here’s a link to the Opal Road pickups: www.righteoussoundpickups.com/product-page/opal-road-set

I use a 4 mic setup - Royer R121 about a foot away from the front of the cabinet, a Lauten LS-208 the same positioning to add a nice note transient / chirp to the warmer Royer r121 ribbon tone. Those two are panned center. Then I use a Royer R10 panned hard left and a Ohma Ribbon panned hard right. All of that goes into a universal audio Apollo x4, then Ableton live 12 for mix down, and then merged into a multi cam clip in Final Cut Pro. Jazzmaster vibes without the fender stock bridge issues and unnecessary controls. Sounds killer, but the 12" radius is a deal breaker for most vintage aficionados. I don't want to play a 25.5 scale guitar matched to a 12" radius. A compound 7.25 - 9.5 or 9.5 would've made more sense.
