Hey Michael, I just wanted to say you are one of the best financial KZbinrs if not the best in my opinion. Do you think the KZbin algorithm has stopped promoting you?

I started investing in stocks at 18, grew portfolio to $600k by 33. Recently, lost over 30% and want to mitigate risks. Also, planning to buy a home soon and want portfolio to grow. What should I do?
@Williamjame44417 күн бұрын
I think you're better off with majority investment in S&P500 and uprising equities cos they always outperform. Alternatively speaking to a certified market strategist can help with pointers on which to acquire

I was adviced to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since they can protect my portfolio for retirement of about $170k. I need advice: Do I keep contributing to my portfolio in this unstable market or do I look into alternative sectors?

The strategies are quite rigorous for the regular-joe. As a matter of fact, they are mostly successfully carried out by experts who have had a great deal of skillsets and knowledge to pull such trades off.
@LiamThompson-cv9xy22 күн бұрын
That is very correct. Having the right financial expert is invaluable. My portfolio is well matched for every season of the market and recently it has hit 80% rise from early last year. I and my CFP are aiming for a 7 figure ballpark goal.

Jason Herman Pierce is the financial expert I use. Just research the name via google, you will get all the necessary information and a correspondence to set up a meeting.

Such an amazing video... I have a diverse portfolio with investment in cryptocurrencies, gold and silver. But I want more, I would like to add low cap altcoins too. But I don't know where to buy the coins from. The truth is, I don't know how to go about the whole process. I would love to diversify my $374k portfolio across the market to withstand inflation. That is my goal. I need help.

What you need to do is fine quality assets with long term potentials. I have discovered that it takes a professional, someone who knows the market very well to make such delicate decisions. But it is very important to get a reliable expert.

Thanks Michael. Appreciate you and your work! I’ve been holding Cameco for over 3 years now and also got in on the Sprott uranium trust about a year ago. I did dabble in some juniors but decided to just leave my money in Cameco and Sprott for peace of mind. Love uranium and will keep holding. Also have XOM and some midstream oil and gas Canadian stocks (I’m Canadian). Wise advice about BOIL and the likes. Folks do need to know it.

just buy 2 or 4 days ahead and wait til it goes up after dividend (patient is the key) i only do this with 4 stocks a month sometimes 3 and sometimes 2 because the recovery time is long to make the sell break even.

I'm 15x up on my coal investments, my best investment ever. But, it was all about timing the take up of the position.
@MichaelJayValueInvesting2 ай бұрын
The coal cycle was quite extreme this time which really allowed for incredible returns at the cycle lows. Timing is important with cyclicals like commodities. Nice job! Majority of investors have never had 10-bagger before, so that is a rare achievement!

Thanks for this educational video, I like how deep you dove into each flavour of energy. I might've missed it but mentioning types of oil could be interesting for viewers too, sweet, sour ,etc. Though I don't invest in energy, I remember seeing CONSOL being mentioned on some forums just before corona. Though the price seemed fair, I refrained from investing because coal seemed a thing of the past. Now look at that tremendous growth :) I wonder what video you're planning to do next, perhaps minerals or renewables? Either way I'll be looking forward to it.

What do you think about short term treasurey ETF's?
@MichaelJayValueInvesting2 ай бұрын
Those can potentially work as an alternative, but you just want to make sure that they are the shortest duration possible if you are using as a cash-equivalent replacement. I think BIL and SGOV are some short duration ones that could be worth looking into if you want an ETF over a money market mutual fund.
@idontlikeyouyo4 ай бұрын
Position of when they picked up the shares is highly important in the example given. If we change the timeframe to 2009. The entire course is different now. Brother A will out earn and exceed brother B by a long shot. It's also not wise to invest the amount you'll need in the future when you lose a job. It's also not the best option to sell shares before considering alternative options like downsizing, reducing bills, or selling other stuff. But I do agree with the brother C outcome.

If this doesnt work. Could you then turn it into a quant strategy and just short the shares prior to ex div? If the div drop is consistently more than the div...
@MichaelJayValueInvesting2 ай бұрын
It isn't necessarily that it doesn't work, it is just that there is no guarantee on how long it takes for the stock to recoup the ex-dividend loss. Sometimes the stock price goes back up fairly quickly, but other times it can take a long time which is the primary reason why I say the strategy "doesn't work". If you are planning on rolling that capital into another dividend capture, you may have to book a net loss for stock that take a while to recover. Shorting would mean you have to still pay the dividend, but you could benefit if the drop is consistently larger that the dividend. There likely isn't too much alpha there but it is possible. I have noticed for Altria (MO) a large dividend stock, that the stock price tends to drop more than the dividend following ex-dividend in the 1-2 days following. Not a guarantee of future results, just an interesting observation...

Why put your money in these funds if you're getting taxed?
@MichaelJayValueInvesting2 ай бұрын
Mainly as an alternative to a bank account that pays no interest. Yes you pay tax on the yield, but better than nothing.

example: if he manages to avoid the WORST possible start date-which by definition is quite likely-the heavily invested dude probably can liquidate a small portion of his Apple at much higher prices.
@MichaelJayValueInvesting4 ай бұрын
That is correct, in this example Brother A is making a bet that he can find work within 3 months so he doesn't have to sell any stock. A more risk averse (and possibly correct?) approach would be to immediately sell some AAPL stock to raise cash as soon as job loss happens to "de-risk" one's financial situation. That would provide some protection from being a forced seller at any potential future lows. The flip side there is you lose some upside if you end up getting a job back sooner and the stock you sold recovered requiring you to buy back at a higher price to get to your original position.
@jamespier78014 ай бұрын
this illustration is an example of “lying with statistics, strategy #4: cherry pick your starting point to favor your own argument.” Try re-running this experiment using 20 different starting points (a year apart) and see whether it proves your point anymore.
@MichaelJayValueInvesting4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes, as noted in this video this is a worst case scenario. Generally with any asset with a higher expected return than cash, you will come out ahead in the long term with more allocation to that asset. But the goal of cash is to protect against those worst cases. If you have the time, please feel free to share what you find when running your examples with different starting points. I agree with you that Brother A likely comes out ahead, though if it was with a different asset with lower returns like VOO (S&P500), the results might be interesting. Thanks for the feedback though, will keep that in mind in future videos/examples.

trust fund ppl are robust and exceptional. you have 1m in stock making 70k/y. you sell 2 years worth and withdraw monthly while earning interest. you pull 1 year as the years roll over and the remaining investment refills the deficit. if you spend less. then you pull less and allow your portfolio to perform. (if you must you get a job for a little it just to keep your account healthy)
@MichaelJayValueInvesting4 ай бұрын
Yes, this can definitely scale as the portfolio grows. Larger portfolios will generate dividend and interest income on top of any cash held for liquidity. That can be reinvested (keeping the same liquidity level) or added to the current cash amount (increasing the liquidity level). Not having to sell means remaining wealth can compound faster than expenses.
