This explanation was very well put together. I know that I am late to the party, but it still added a lot of clarity. My first language is French, but I learned it from my parents and not in school, so I made many mistakes. Content like this can help me clear up my knowledge. Thanks!

On my last attempt at French 10 years ago, I had a teacher who was from France and she got me to this great level, of written and reading French. I then went to France to spend 2 months at a French school full of confidence, and on the testing day I did the written test and tested into B2!! Then I did the aural test and did so badly the school thought it was a mistake and I must just be jet lagged so they put me in the B1 class. On the first day of class I could not understand a single word! it was so fast. So I asked to move to A2. Even in A2 I struggled to understand the teacher and the class!! I was so deflated and left after a few weeks. This time I am NOT going to make that same mistake. Plus we have Netflix!! As I love music and hip hop, I am watching the Apple french music show where the host interviews French artists. Its been so exhausting trying to follow them, even just a minute of conversation, but I am loving it and discovering new music.

on the pronouciation is it similar to “do” and “dew”, except with an “s” ?

I think English and French has the similar grammar but French just have more rules. For the words, lots of English words were coming from French. So, French is not that hard for most English speakers

I used Duolingo post op in hospital for many weeks. My French was very rusty (time had passed) and it was really useful. Having completed the tree, I decided on a 2nd lap (back in hospital!). I had been very fluent in highschool, I started to realise that I was not speaking enough and was losing confidence. So, I linked up with a native French speaker. It was like going from K to V, I realised how much was missing. I was speaking text book style French, mostly in present tense, all but silently. So, I think Duolingo is okay as an (re) entry into learning French but very limited. I realised that it would take years to achieve basic proficiency without another program. In time, I moved on. Being an American app, we went into Quebecoise for lesson after lesson, there was no option. On a lighter note, being English I often ended up explaining the possibility that French bathrooms & restrooms may not have a loo and about public loos & French guys lower inhibition (in [Northern] France/Paris). Last thing, at school within quite a short time we started to think our words in French, not translate. We started to become bilingual and this is much easier. I am still with the French tutor but a lot of it includes speaking and writing. She encourages use of good other sources and the use of French as it is spoken. Classroom French and Duolingo French are not French as spoken everyday by the French. I was taught il/elle/on at school so the first lesson was a stretch (tu) but I realised I needed to relax. Five lessons on I am chattering away. As a system this is fab!
