I saw retinol being recommended as moisture, which is surprising. According to WebMD, Retinol, or retinoids, features prominently in many skin products, ranging from anti-acne to anti-aging ones. But for people with eczema, this vitamin A derivative can irritate the skin and trigger flares

The felt experience of someone with severe acne scarring is comparable to experiencing mutilation. Mostly because it's facial. Your beauty is taken away, changes in lighting suddenly reveal a grostesque attribute to your facial features to others. Being aware of that makes you want to not be seen. In addition to dealing with that loss, you have to deal with people who lie to you. You knpw how perfectionistic women are about their appearence and yet they pretend your scars are not a big deal. The way we judge ourselves is the way we judge others.

Thanks Dr. Syed! Excellent advice! I think a lot of people try to treat persistent and/or deep cystic acne with cosmetic skincare when they should indeed be seeing a dermatologist. On a related note, I once worked with a woman with really bad rosacea - much worse than mine - who was treating it with over the counter products. IIRC, Ernest Laszlo, including washing her face with hot(!) water and their special soap. She finally went to a dermatologist who put her on Accutane, and she had enormous improvement!

I used to have burning lip sensation all the time as I used all kind of lip balms, which made me reapply them again and again for some comfort. Now I use Aquaphor healing ointment, and my lips feel so much better! I still use a lot, mostly because I'm so used the need the feeling of it on my lips, however, at least I no longer feel that burning feeling that lip balms left. I think that at this point it's basically addiction to have those products that keeps me reapplying all day long.

This was an interesting video, and I enjoyed listening to these perspectives. As someone who has done a lot of research into skincare ingredients (to the level of reading journal articles), tried several things, and been to several dermatologists on my skincare journey, I can honestly say that there are skincare products that work. The reason I've been through all this is because I wanted to improve my acne. The bumps and scars looked out of place on my face, and the deep ones were sometimes painful to wash over. Of course I considered diet as well, and kept it as healthy as I could. I'm so happy to be in a far better place now. I'm sure that many things influence my personal standard of beauty, but what I know to be most important to me is feeling good when I look at myself. I now have that, with some scarring left to tackle, and I'm excitedly on that journey. I'm really grateful for products that work 😊
