Just giving a surname/given name seems to me like giving half an answer, particularly when that surname is quite common in a given country.

But the Yamamoto who was prime minister WAS an admiral. This wasn’t a random guess - he knew (just didn’t feel sure). I don’t get why they insisted that he’d made it up.
@martyklestadt67666 ай бұрын
Because it wasn't the Yamamoto he was thinking of, which was the admiral who had died in the war. The name was a guess--he'd hoped it was a common enough family name.

He must have only known about Yamamoto because he was in the film "Pearl Harbor". How else would he have heard of him but not Hideki Tojo, a much more prominent army general from the same era who was actually also Prime Minister?
@Buggaton2 жыл бұрын
I've never seen the film Pearl Harbour and I've never heard of Tojo. I have heard of Yamamoto.
@NYKevin100 Жыл бұрын
@@Buggaton Americans have heard of Yamamoto because he both directed the attack on Pearl Harbor, and led the Japanese side during the Battle of Midway. I'm not sure how much emphasis a British education places on the Pacific theater in WW2, but if they teach anything at all about it, they would simply have to cover both of those events, so Yamamoto's name would inevitably come up.
@Buggaton Жыл бұрын
@@NYKevin100 In answer to the question of how much the UK education system teaches the Pacific theatre, I'd have to say absolutely none. I never learned about it. It was all Battle of Britain and D-Day and all the flashy stuff that made us look good, not any of the horrible shit in the Pacific or the Eastern Front. My grandfather flew a Spitfire in the Pacific too and yet... I learned nothing of it. To me when I think of Yamamoto I think of the West Wing episode and clip "We killed Yamamoto" where they hilariously get the Battle of Agincourt incredibly wrong! But that isn't very helpful either :D
