This is an old video so I'm not sure if this comment will ever get through. I have a dog going through something similar right now and I have two questions. Did did JP have "deep pain sensation" in the hind legs post surgery or was there no feeling at all? And secondly, was he incontinent entirely as well? My dog can't feel anything in her hand legs and is largely incontinent and so I'm looking for some sort of similarities to give me hope

We treated JP conservatively without surgery. We have treated paralysed patients successfully with no deep pain sensation as well as incontinence. The success rate becomes much higher if the return of deep pain sensation is fast. Often patients can remain incontinent until they start to stand and sometimes until they start taking steps.

I'm sitting here crying watching this sweet boy make such a remarkable recovery, it looks like he was a wonderful patient! And what awesome owners to do everthing in your power to help him on this journey. Our beloved little mini dachshund just came off crate rest for IVDD and she's doing so much better, it's encouraging to see videos like this and how much progress can be made even if things don't look so great at the outset. I hope for continued good health for JP!

How did JP experience his recovery when it looked like he had no use of his back legs? Also, did you have to express his bladder? How would he move his bowels? What a dedicated bunch of people. It's amazing how much love our pets inspire. ❣

Excellent video! My dog had FCE and was knuckling and dragging and I used a sling to help her walk, grounding her legs/feet and supportive standing to eat/drink, etc. I put my finger in the paw pads of her bad leg and she started to get reflexive response. I also did range of motion exercises to her bad leg which was very stiff in extension. She also developed wound to top of her bad paw from dragging that i treated with dressing changes 2x/day. She was treated with IV steriods at vet in beginning. She is walking and running and doing everything again after a few months. Her one leg is still visibly weaker but 100% functional, although I don't let her up on high bed/jumping from anything too high because I think she maybe jumped down from bed when i was at work at thats what caused the whole thing. I am so happy with her recovery. She has a new lease on life, and our work together towards her recovery made our bond stronger than ever! I pray for anyone who has to go through this! It can get better!!!

My 11 yo Pekingese-Maltese-poodle mutt lost the strength in his legs 1 week ago. The vet says IVD bulging / herniation. He originally was very weak in the hind legs and was unable to consistently place the left rear paw correctly on the ground, like a human foot drop, so he would place the paw top side down and try to stand like that. The foot was bent under him. I will disagree with your slide stating that if you see this sign it means nerves will not regenerate. You are mistakenly taking hope from people although you obviously have wonderful intentions. As a chiropractic orthopedist I can tell you a sign like this can be temporary. In one week he clearly has more strength in the dorsiflexors of his paw because he is bringing the paw up as he swings the leg forward which he could not do previously. It will be a long recovery. Thank you for your information as this is truly sad when it happens to both the dog and his owners.

My dog has IVDD at the moments and its been 4 weeks (almost). He was on Pain meds, along with some steroids and anti-inflammation meds. Now, he is still not able to stand himself but whenever we pinch his toes(back), he throws back his legs just like trying to stop us from doing that. Is that a good sign to recovery? What shall we do extra in order to get him on his feet yet again? Thank you so much in advance🙏🏻

Please try to find a local vet or physical rehab therapist that can offer the various treatments (acupuncture, physiotherapy, medications etc) for your dog. He or she will prescribe a home physio plan with the different physio exercises that you can do at home. It is a positive sign that he is reacting so strongly when you pinch the toes.

Hi, My dog just recently diagnosed with IVDD and it progressed so fast that all of his 4 legs become paralyzed. I live in Indonesia where theres no MRI yet for dog so its making the surgeon cant operate him yet. Since he cant walk or even lift his head up, he can’t control his bladder and poop, so theres also another problem with his organ. Its been overwhelming, I cry most of the time. Hoping theres another way until we can find a way to operate on him 🥲

In mild cases, there is often bunny hopping (where both hindlegs move together), a slight swaying of the hindend, slowness to rise and maybe difficulty jumping or climbing stairs. If it is unilateral, the muscles of the affected leg may be "thinner" when compared to the other (non-affected) leg.

This is an awesome video, Gemma always had a smile on her face and you love to see that. However, I am a bit confused as to what exactly the treatment was? We saw her practicing walking and you mentioned accupuncture... whilst I am hugely skeptical of the latter, there was other therapy mentioned but only briefly. What was the main treatment?

My 3 year old dog just suffered FCE yesterday, and will be using this as a template. It is just in one hind leg, and she seems to have a little control and feeling. Thank you. I didn't know the exercises were so important early . I think mines a stage 4. Hes at 2.5 weeks I started more physio this week and bought a laser I've been using. Just not sure if my exercise ball i already have I've been using is too big and I've been frightened to put him on the treadmill, even at speed 1 but I think I'll get someone to help me and possibly try tomorrow. About how long would you reccomend physio exercises per day ? Especially since their supposed to be on crate rest, never know how much to do.

Our 1 yr old golden rottie has been having a noticeable limp on her right back leg after playing at the dog park for around 3 months . I don’t know if it’s because she fell off our couch while playing and landed on her side on our wooden floor ( and hopefully will get better with time) or something more permanent 😥 I remember thinking her walk was odd as a puppy though because she really exaggerated her hip movements (but I never payed attention with any other dog so could have been normal)
