Hey Kurt! Always enjoy watching your ultimate videos. Is there anyway you can make a video regarding FOULS between the mark and the thrower? Mark fouls AND thrower fouls? In particular, disputes I ALWAYS see, even at the club level, is the idea of the THROWER initiating contact with the frisbee on the mark's stationary hand / arm. In fact today, I had my hands and arms fully extended out, wasn't committing any marker violations (straddeling, wrapping, etc). I saw the thrower was about to launch a massive back hand....so I shuffled my feet to the right and kept my arms and hands in the same extended position.....the thrower was unwinding and the disk, while still in his hand, made contact where my stationary arms where. The disk fell out of his hands and it landed a few feet behind me. He called a foul on me. I contested, we talked. After the game I showed him sections 15 and 17 of the USA rule book, and it was confusing for him to understand since there's a lot of jargon in there. From my understanding of those two sections, I didn't foul. I gave him plenty of disc space, my hands / arms were already occupying that space that he threw into, and he made contact with me with the disc. If I'm wrong, definitely let me know, and I appreciate any feedback from you!

When you're playing a normal force defense you're naturally allowing the defender space to the break side. In this case he tried to get to the open side, but couldn't so he took the open space to the break side. If the thrower can get a nice break off then there's not much you can do. In this case, the thrower didn't have any other options so he threw a break pass that hung in the air which is what I was banking on and I was able to go get it.

is this something you should only do close to the endzone or is it applicable anytime you're covering the 1?
@kurtegibson
@kurtegibson 10 күн бұрын
Good question, for the most part this is applicable all the way up the field because of you don’t adjust at all it can be easy for good throwers to throw those inside throws that are really open side breaks.

Hey Kurt, so I'm wondering, at 3:00, if you prioritize covering the inside lane/the break side or the cut to the backfield dump space more. (Or if you even think this way...) It kind of sounds like you say you're covering both at one point, and giving up the long throw to the OS, but then if I get you, you also say when you're covering the backfield cut at 4:48, that you're happy to lose the race slightly to the break side because as you do here, you may get a floaty throw that you can get your hands on. So would you agree that you cover/deny the backfield more than the inside/break lane in this scenario? Thanks!

Great analysis. Only thing I'd like is for you to play the clip through in full at the start, just so we can see the flow of the play and then focus on your defence knowing where the disc is. That would maybe ruin the big reveal of your huge block though! 😂

What are your thoughts on playing farther off the front stack when the thrower is on the flick sideline that way no one move is enough to get you out of position? Is it because you would be out of position for the around throw?
@kurtegibson
@kurtegibson 13 күн бұрын
Yes, this is possible in certain situations. I imagine if you were doing this the 1 in the stack wouldn’t really be a threat and likely not in a good position. You would probably want to be thinking about cutting off a throwing lane while still being close enough to engage if your offender made a cut

I think it’s important to note that there are defenses that work against this kind of offense. Leo and Jacques take advantage of the most basic tenet of offense - In a match up where both players are similar in athleticism, the offensive player always has a slight advantage, and that advantage scales with the amount of open space the offensive player can work in. All of Brown’s cutters are very from the disc to give those one-on-one matchups so much room to work. This works exceptionally against teams like Colorado, Pitt, or Cal Poly who share a defensive philosophy of ‘win your matchup’ with athleticism and skill. They consistently leave their defenders on islands as a team ethos, rather than using a more complex scheme of switches and poaches. The majority of college teams are incredibly vulnerable to this two-man game because their defensive schemes are underdeveloped.

Great breakdown. I primarily play pickup where we often prioritize safe play over jockeying for space, so I tend to ignore highlights like the first one where (at first glance) it just looks like they're both being a little extra "physical" due to the level of competition. You helped me see what a masterful job Raphy is doing at protecting himself in that situation while still keeping the play alive, and that's a skill you can use at any level of play.
