Amazing content and breakdown for defense! I have never played on a college or club team but I will try to apply this to my League and pickup games. Its interesting how a tall and fast athlete can improve so much in 1 year, It shows that positioning, reaction and awareness makes a huge difference!

I was really confused when i heard Davis won defensive player of the year this year. But i guess it's cause all I remember are his mistakes from last year, those big gaps for no good reason. Didn't watch anything this year though. What a really huge improvement. Great video Kurt!

At 6:00 (in your video, not the 2022 video), AD not only lost track of his guy but also was not aware of his teammate calling for a switch onto 13 (who ends up collecting the huck moments later). Really odd defensive lapses last year.

How do you feel about Davis using his feet early in the mark? I've always thought of using your feet as a last second resort because it makes you off balance and vulnerable to fakes/quick movement by the thrower? Its evident that he shows great balance by being able to put up a leg and still be balanced enough to follow the throwers movement but curious to hear your thoughts on overall raising your leg as a mark?

I think you can use it situationally. It can cause the thrower to think about certain throws that he would normally throw and maybe not throw them, or, he releases quicker to avoid that and cause a less accurate pass. The problem is that when you’re on one leg you can’t react to a pivot. So early in the count I can see flashing a kick but if you do it late in the count you may risk being off balance and not being able to stop the throw.

Thank you for the video! I’d say I’m shorter than most players, so I tend to force them in more because I don’t want to get beaten deep. But sometimes I might give them to much of an easy pass. What should I do?

Sometimes an easy pass is better than getting beat deep!

When the person you guard is far enough under you can try sprinting as hard as possible to stop the under, because at a certain point, the deep cut will become less viable when several other of your teammates are already deep of your guy and can help out if a deep throw goes off. Additionally, you can be more aware of how much to the foreside the person you guard is when they catch the disc. If you can let the offense catch several unders, but each time push them more foreside, when they get close to the sideline you can play your mark hard no around (meaning you fully commit to the force). Because they are neat the sideline yard gaining throws will be more difficult, which is why you will mark hard no around: to try and prevent the reset throw. A lot of times in this position a turnover is created by forcing a non handler to throw a low percentage throw right on the sideline. If you are unfamiliar with the second concept, I would recommend looking up “how to trap on the sideline in ultimate” or something along those lines. Also, generally getting faster and increasing how high you can jump will help with your problem. I’m not sure what your skill level is so you may have already been aware of these things, but I hope I helped!
