Downtown Jazz at its most iconoclastic. Well almost . There was People like Cecil & John Zorn. As well as O.C.

Excellent. My fave Holland tune from the first album is Back-Woods Song (that bass intro!!!), but I'll take May Dance too :) I never got to see Gateway, unfortunately. But I did see Abercrombie twice - at Sweet Basil with his killer organ trio and, believe it or not, at a Baptist Church in Peekskill, NY in a quartet setting with LaVerne, La Spina and Tony Jefferson. That only happened because I introduced myself to him at my local supermarket, and he invited me to come see him play that night. Talk about luck!

Thank you so much - have been looking for a recording from this tour for years. Still angry at myself for missing it as I marvel at the self-titled studio date from mid tour. I knew someone who caught this group in the UK and who remarked that Frisell spent half the gig without playing or even holding the guitar. In an interview from the period Bley referred to the group ending due to Frisell "graduating" - a euphemism for his pay-scale rising which necessitated him cutting his input to honour the contract?

Motian is unbelievably one of the under-recognized greats. He's still one of my very favorites. From Evans to Jarrett to his own (over 30) great albums. His musical evolution was oh so seamless and a wonder to behold. It must've been great to hear such a concert in that setting. I saw a few at the MoMa outdoor garden in the early to mid-noughts, but nothing as cool as this. Thanks, as always, for the upload!

Obviously Old Man Scho isn't as good as Joni Mitchell otherwise he'd be in the Rolling Stones top 250 guitarist list 🤔😯🤣😡🙄🙄😡🙃😯🫤.. my God almighty 🙄🙄🙄

I agree the Rolling Stone list is a joke, but Joni is not the example I would have chosen. She was pretty innovative harmonically and in experimenting with open tunings, so there is a case to be made she deserves her spot.. I mean, Johnny Ramone ahead of Frank Zappa?????.

Stern in full flow . Another thing to aim for if only . I can hear all the minor lines on the first track but the endless flow is crazy . I just uploaded some Jazz on here and Spotify, silk street vibrations by the Mike Edmonds Quintet . You might like it , good version of Hot House . Thank you for this it’s top class , Mike Stern is a big inspiration. So are the other guys , like the videos of Harvie s with Pat martino

That's too bad about the cuts, because Victor Lewis is a monster. He went on to become the drummer in Bobby Watson's fantastic group, Horizon.

Hey, Benedetti cut out Max Roach and Miles Davis solos to save space for more Bird. Yeah Lewis is great, but I can't blame the recorder for wanting as much Stern as he could get 😉

I was wondering how Moore ended up in Bley's orbit, so I looked him up. Turns out he played on the two Bley synthesizer show early 70s albums (one with Annette Peacock). Then a year later, he played on Peacock's "I'm the One". He's done about a dozen sideman dates.
@LydianLunch15 күн бұрын
I agree with your comments on Glenn Moore. Oregon was a great bridge for me, 45 years ago, from trippy hippie music in jazz. I guess maybe he was more of a homebody, unlike Ralph Towner, and didn’t want to spend his time away from Oregon seeking out adventurous musical settings. Very cool recording. A lost chapter, a missing link, a road washed away…

I had twilight time .its like way outta print tho... This is s good representation of what Bennie was doing at the tail end if the mini jazz renaissance .. . Also it's a great example of playing so called trad jazz while being NOT a museum piece gathering dust somewhere .

This is very close to the first time I heard this band, in Ann Arbor. They played Paraphernalia then too. A lot of circular breathing on those long held notes on the theme, which freaked us kids out but was... secondary to everything else that goes on in that tune

This man has been criticized as a "purist" and a sell out for ages. One thing is for certain, though. He is and has always been an exceptional musician who has produced many great, not just good recordings. As far as being a purist goes....hell, he's recorded collaborations with both Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton. LOL
@StephenBuckingham22 күн бұрын
I know early on Miles and Stanley Crouch got all over him for being too much of a purist, but I don't think that criticism aged well given the breadth of Wynton's many projects since the early 80s.
@steverickenbacher711022 күн бұрын
@@StephenBuckingham I think Miles may have been pissed that Columbia was promoting Wynton as the next big thing as Miles was making his comeback. I know that these days, Crouch seems to be firmly in the Marsalis camp as he's written many a liner note for Wynton.
