I was there for this night and the next night at the Beacon with Robben Ford replacing Stern. The shows were remarkably different with Miles opening for BB King at the Beacon Theater and with a shorter time slot. It seemed more fiery with faster tempos and a different vibe It wasn't just a change in guitarists that accounted for it. Both shows were equally compelling in their own ways. I hadn't heard the Tutu material before as Miles was literally recording those tracks in the studio the week of these shows.

As great as Scofield has been and continues to be, it has always been Stern's nasty guitar tone that I've preferred in Miles' bands. Fun fact: Mike Stern is Kyra Sedgwick's half-brother. I imagine that if they weren't "on the outs", Mike would've teamed up with The Bacon Brothers by now ;)
