Did it occur to you that the film makers did not want hos film to be a documentary on Mexico, sex change or drug barons? That this film is gearing more toward opera than realism? One clue: in real life, people don’t sing and dance all the time. I loved this movie, and I find the arguments of those who pretend to be outraged by it quite immature, and frankly ludicrous

Thanks for vid, honestly I dont even think asking question if money/bribe was involved is waste of time, I think that someone should investigate level of crap like this because this is not something that I would like to associate with "best movies", this is actually insane that you manage to nominate literal poop and try to sell it as delicious cake then insulting anyone that says even a word like "but it stinks" I always try to see positive sides but Emilia Perez lierally is a movie that has awful everything, maybe it looks okay (I mean the scenes and direction look fine enough, at least cameraman is not shaking violently every scene, I guess this is nice? On the other hand, songs are really...impressive because it actually hurts sometimes and makes me want to vomit and go blind and deaf. Completely bad acting too, I am not native but I guess Mexicans know if someone butchers the language or not. Yeah main actresses are literally the worst, again why did they think it is fine? The plot and dialogues.,,,well I really think it COULD be really nice in alternate reality where the movie is made by competent people that care. The story starting like redemption arc and about getting transition is really interesting topic and could be executed, But it was not so the movie is piece of garbage instead. No way we are on THIS level of filmmaking and our movie is at oscars and we try to sell it as something worth watching when the director is clueless like child, nobody cant really change anything about the story because it look like watching 10 years old children in playground trying to make theatre scene but nothing works like it should work, hard to make a good movie when you care about making...the correct type of movie and nobody in team is having idea on what is a good movie. And I dont know who EXATLY should be blamed because I think the production looked like hell, at least I would not care about making a good movie when everyone is either not knowing what is going on or they are forced to work with smile on face all the time and I dont think the executives are aware what is "QA" or "opinions: or "discussion" What a pile of insanity, wow. Still cant believe that they can get away like that with 13 paid nominations, I dont think it would be hard to find out because the people in Hollywood seem to be dumb as bricks, how you can have NOONE aware enough to say that maybe at least nominees should watch movie and not just blindly give vote? Ah, the corruption,,,

Well, I never supported the idea that actors and actresses should only portray characters that are just like them. I see no issues in latin people portraying a Mexican character. Nor do I see as an issue that the trans character is not portrayed in a good way. That said: first Cuties, now this. I think the French should be barred from making movies for a couple decades.

So.. why does it matter what ethnicity the actors are? This is part of whats wrong in hollywood: casting actors based on their ethnicity to be "diverse" even if the actors chosen aren't the best options. This movie is obviously garbage, but I think the criticism is being misplaced when it comes to casting.

Okay, as a complete outsider, just surfing by, Niki, i'm confused. You address the film EP as being WOKE, yet, is it not at heart cultural appropriation on multiple levels? That is, appropriating various cultures for commercial reasons without even an attempt to be otherwise? If this film had been produced by a far-right fridge group to subtly mock the various cultures shown, we'd all agree the film was culturally misappropriated,

I think the answer to the mystery is that the director is famous for other movies, showed this to some pompous artsy people in Europe where they didn’t understand Spanish and thought they were voting on some deep meaning artsy thing then everyone followed their lead when in reality it’s all a case of The Emperor’s New Clothes.

What’s crazy about the Emilia Perez controversy is that we literally saw this exact same scenario being MOCKED by last year’s Best Picture nominee, American Fiction. That movie is a satire involving a bunch of white liberal critics who are eager to reward a story just because it’s seen as the “woke” choice, completely missing how outdated and surface-level the representation actually is.

Omg i'm just angry, this shouldn't be the most foreign language film nominated in the history of the oscars, many films deserved that spot not this emilia shit pèrez, from the umbrellas of Cherbourg to crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon to parasite, Roma, Farewell my concubine, raise the red lantern, Ran these and more have been nominated in many categories but these that should've had that spot not emilia pèrez

Emilia Perez is the biggest example of the oscars getting carried away with its perception of a film. While I do think it deserves nominations in editing, hair & makeup, & cinematography & Gascon & Saldana both being worthy of nominations in acting (particularly Saldana who should win) it seems like the oscars got too carried away with just how many it actually deserved. There is absolutely no way it should be nominated for best screenplay as the screenplay was by far the worst part of the film as it is a complete mess. With as bad as a screenplay it has it shouldn't be in for best director either as that nominee should've gone to Denis for Dune. And it definitely shouldn't be a best picture nominee either.

Hahahah omg! And what makes you think the movie is about Mexico and Mexican People and …?!? Poor Audiard is so shocked by the stupidity and the ignorance of the reporter that he doesn’t even know who gave that lady the job?! And you all are so shallow by just seeing the surface, knowing nothing about the allegory, metaphor or literary techniques not cinematic genre that blindly make suck fools out of yourselves 🤣🤣🤣 like Jacques Audiard after years and years of filmmaking in this time and age hasn’t thought about this, and there is no such thing as consultants in the film industry?! You said yourself right at the beginning of your own video that Musicals are not your area of expertise then suddenly after watching this one movie with a preconceived negative mindset decided to become an expert with strong opinions?! Cause opinions are information these days and anything is content so why not? Let’s join the herd and make a video to get some likes and make money out of it 🤣😂😂 oh my world! Please stop embarrassing yourself! 🤣😂😆😆 but it was a good laugh I should give it to you! 😆

First and foremost, I agree that Emilia Perez is shockingly shallow. However, an issue I have with the discourse around the movie is that most people critiquing it open with a paraphrased “I don’t like musicals and this has no artistic quality.” Which isn’t true. The cinematography is good and the performances are good (besides Gomez’s Spanish but she was directed by a person who doesn’t speak the language). This video only gave the Netflix campaign as the reason for its awards success. But that’s also not fully true. This movie *killed* at the Cannes festival and won best actress(es) before it was bought for distribution. So why did that happen? When you’re at a festival, you’re watching movie after movie with a bunch of movie enthusiasts. Most of the audience is in the industry or in the media, and these are premiers - so there’s a vague self-importance and desire to create “festival buzz.” And if you’ve watched 15+ movies in 4 days and all of a sudden Emilia Perez shows up, you could easily get taken in by it. It’s bold and could be a good watch with an engaged audience instead of alone at home on Netflix. There’s likely not a ton of people from Mexico or the trans community, and no one wants to be a downer at the festivals. They’re meant to be celebratory and most attendees want to break records for longest standing ovation. I think this is something more people should consider when asking how movies are critically acclaimed or win awards. Being different than the competition matters a lot. But not too different - can’t have a Nickel Boys or The Substance win best picture or director. I hope it doesn’t win best picture. But it would be surprising, if it doesn’t win anything. Saldana’s been cleaning up the Supporting Actress awards, and I wouldn’t say she’s undeserving (although I’d rather Grande or Jones win). The backlash against this movie is huge and deserved, but movies are gigantic collaborations. A bigoted director or racist actress shouldn’t take away from the other talented people involved. It’s still art.

for me it is difficult to look at it within an artistic angle. this movie is about druglords, cartels, kidnappings, something that torments latin america and particularly mexico. if a movie is about this topic, it needs to be taken seriously, and i couldnt care less about the trans aspect of the movie, because regardless of who is the druglord, man woman or trans or anyone, these people are the scum of this world. i find it so hard to give recognition to the fact that this trans person is nominated and that the movie is somewhat extravagant and the creative part of it when it is about a problem that has been tormented and terrorize the every day life of so many people.

Ummm I gotta disagree regarding the redemption arc. The whole 2nd half of the film deals with Emilia trying to atone for the pain she caused others, it's the reason she helps them. It's not just "she's good now" it's she's in this because she wants to be good, she is trying to basically shed the bad person she was before. Even her transition, poor as it might sound, connects with this idea, she can't be this person anymore and that in a way means leaving parts most people don't consider behind.
