Thank you for a fascinating demo Steve. I now understand more about notans and what purpose they serve. I’ve found them difficult to use but am determined to try again after this lesson.

Hi, am a bit late here,...but what a fantastic video to share, thank you! One question: How long des it usually take for a typical A5 or A4 Notan?
@stephenberryart9 ай бұрын
Hi! Never too late to learn about notans! :) I don't do them at that size. That would be pretty big. I do them at around 4"x6" or 5"x 7". They can take me somewhere betweeen 20-60 minutes, depending on my mood. An A5 or A4 would take a very long time and not necessarily help me simplify things. I actually propose to students that they do them even smaller.

Thanks Stephen. I needed another, extended explanation of a Notan. In the past my notans were good, but I just can’t make the transition to the colour painting. I’m going to try again. And see what happens. Thank you again 🙏

what paper are you using in the video ? my pentel ink pen tends to lose opacity/ the ink spreads thin while I'm working on watercolor paper because of the paper's texture. it ends up preventing me from making a completely black and white sketch because I end up with "gray" zones
@stephenberryart Жыл бұрын
Hi Tiff. I use watercolor paper. Specifically, I like to use a Pentalic Art Watercolor Journal, but I'm sure lots of different types would work. This has a thick paper though, so the ink doesn't go through. It also has a bit of texture, which can help with dry brush work.

I have a board that I use to hold an opaque projector. I put the T-nut on the top, though, so it gets pulled down when tightened. But, in your case, it gets held by the additional part, which is even better.

Stephen, realizing you made this a couple of years ago now, but I cant thank you enough for creating this! I recently blew out my meniscus and can no longer paint plein air on the ground like I used to so this set up will be ideal for me. I really dont like the tray in front and down low either and I like to work flat with acrylics. finding this video was like a needle in the haystack and "gold"! so appreciate you for sharing this with the world!

This is such a gift you’ve given us!! THANK YOU! I hope the viewers appreciate how much time, effort and frustration you have saved them from with these 3 videos & blog. I have spent DAYS & DAYS over the years trying to find the supplies to assemble just this type of versatile, adaptable, compact & affordable plein-air stand/support for ‘water-coloring’. (There’s at least 1 other U-tuber who is marketing a less adaptable & less durable setup similar to yours for $200+ !) Given your level of ingenuity, I’ld like to know how you anchor the tripod against wind outdoors? What tie-downs or clips to wind-proof objects on the trays do you use? Thank you again for these extremely valuable plein-air setup suggestions!

This recording ( I was unable to attend the zoom session) was probably the very thing I’ve been waiting for, for ages. No other artist has been so detailed on the subject of choosing references. I’ve been painting for several years and have improved considerably but my reference photos were probably slowing my progress unnecessarily. I couldn’t understand why I was so often dissatisfied, and frustrated. The good thing about the recorded version is that I could pause and take notes. I’ve seen you paint a notan before but this time I understand the sense of it more and will get the app. Thank you so much Stephen.

Hi Barbara. I'm glad to hear that this demo was so useful to you! Sometimes the hardest and most important thing (IMO) with painting is the mental side of things- not just your technique. Good luck!

Hi Stephen, I've been following you for some time now and those of us who are gaining instruction from you are very grateful for all of the information you're providing. These concepts seem so obvious once we've heard them, but when you haven't been exposed to them as part of your prior learning process, they're definitely not! So, a huge thank you! Question: what exactly does stacking your shapes mean?
@stephenberryart Жыл бұрын
Yes, these things can make a really big difference if you've not consciously tried them before. If you go back and look at successful photos, you'll probably find that they are applying a lot of these principles accidentally. Stacking shapes is when a dark or light shape breaks the horizon line and connect different areas of a subject. Telephone poles, really tall weeds by the shore, tall trees, etc These things help create ways for us to more easily move about the painting. If you can make it to the live zoom demo on tuesday, i'll be going over a lot of these things. You can find out the details in the description up above. :)

Very encouraging Stephen! I’m motivated again. When you say zoom in and crop, I presume you mean from the reference photo not zooming in as you’re taking the photo? Or should that be done too? Looking forward to the next video. Now I’m going to scrutinize my album of reference photos on my iPad.
@stephenberryart Жыл бұрын
Hi again Barbara! When taking a photo, nothing beats getting closer to the subject. :D I find zooming in when you are taking the photo can actually lead to blurry photos though-- I've had much better results zooming in after I take the photo, if I can't get closer to the subject physically. If you can make it, I'll be doing the 3rd part of this series as a live zoom demo on this Tuesday, 1/24. Follow the link in the description to my blog post to find out more there. :)

Steven, you have precisely described the point I have reached in my watercolor journey. I am able to follow a demo, follow a step-by-step, or simply copy another artist’s painting and have a result that I am totally happy with. However, when it comes to choosing a painting and developing a composition, I am at a loss. I have known this for some time and had identified it as my core problem. I now understand. I am not the only one in that boat, and I am Anxiously waiting your lessons on this subject. Also, I love love love your paintings and your style.

Hi Peggy. You're right at the beginning of what I consider the really good part in the journey! :D I'll have the next video in this series up and live in a day or two, and then I'll also be doing a free live session early next week, before the cart opens for my upcoming class "From Photo to Final Painting". See you soon! :)
