Seems that what is happening in COlombia is what happened to the US once the HMO's started in the mid 80's which means that healthcare will get out of control moving forward. This is not a surprise at all since privatization of healthcare is a common practice that is spreading. And im sorry to say that when someone says in an interview "Dont worry about it youll be fine" is when it wont be.

The SURA interview is a physical exam... they take your blood.... and take your weight and height. Then if you're over the BMI or not amongst the "privilege" class (interrupt that as you wish but IYKYK) you'll not be denied but ask to reapply when you have lost weight.... PS... they will not tell you what weight to pass the next time you return.

If you're BMI shows you are overweight.... by all means save yourself a trip to Colombia and apply for SURA before you leave there. DO NOT GO TO COLOMBIA AND GET INSURANCE THERE... you will likely be discriminated on and denied insurance and you would have wasted a trip there to find out. There are better insurances than SURA so seek others instead first.

Sura has been strategically moving towards the prepaid private model for a long time ago, it's just a shift of focus because the EPS model for them does not make business sense anymore, also they know that with expats they now have a growing market for prepagada so they're putting the focus where the business is better for them

Most of us who are retired aren’t eligible for Prepagado. I’ve “aged out” of eligibility.

Right - I believe age 63 is the cutoff point if memory serves correctly. Right at this moment, my EPS Sura Basic plan is still in effect as far as I can tell (still being billed for and paying the monthly premiums), although I've found this public plan useless to the point that on the rare occasions I've used medical services here I just go directly to private physicians and pay out-of-pocket (which fortunately is not expensive here). What the future actually holds for us at this point, who's really to say?

Besides the aged out issue....the coverage is good if you live in a big city, I dont....the nearest hospital that is in network for me is 90 minutes away and not nearly as good as the hospital that is 10 minutes from my house.

Can I ask you guys what you pay monthly for SURA? I got what seemed like an outrageous price but I have nothing to compare it to so maybe I am wrong. Thanks for any help.

It should be around 150 dollars/month for the one called ‘clásico’. It’s very comprehensive and includes accidents and emergencies abroad - if you inform them before you travel. The other one is called ‘global’, but I don’t know the cost.

Sura is about to go chapter 11. The agent in the video is not an authorized communication officer of Sura and before this year is over ALL of the private policies generated by Sura will have NO value

@@AKJoel Just google the structure of the health system in Colombia including private policies, if EPS run out of money, Insurance Policy makers will have no funds to cover even if it is a private policy, ALL of the funds comes from EPS and colombian gov is NOT sending any funds to EPS, the agent is just biased as her role is not to create panic, but Sura an its entire network call it EPS or Prepago is sinking like a Titanic, want to know more? Just google: Where the private health providers in Colombia get money from...it is a bubble about to boom
