Great video! Do you take sun, cold weather, or waterproof gloves?
@LotsaFreshAir5 күн бұрын
Thanks! It would depend on the season and forecast. On this trip I did take a pair of cold weather gloves. If I'm walking off track in to the scrub, I also take leather scrub gloves, which can double as cold weather gloves.

Dot Butler would be proud of you. I only just discovered your sites today, maps have always been a problem to get and a pain to work with in the bush. Magnetic grids, cutting them down and somehow making them more durable helped. The Yanks have booklets of maps for trails, when you've done one section, you just rip it out and use it to start a fire. Imagine double sided printing combined with track notes. Officeworks or the like may be useful for those that don't have the tech. Go Tiger...Go

Naw, bless. Thanks for your kind words. In my wildest dreams, to even sit around a campfire (just without the bash/burn/bury vibe of her day) with Dot would be a dream come true.

I wanted to help everyone out who has been wondering where to source and then how to download topographic maps (official topos) for each state of Australia. Not only where to find them (I've put them all in my blog post lotsafreshair.com/where-to-get-topographic-maps/) but the print settings you need to use to get the best results. Yes, yes... there's loads of navigation apps out there, but there's nothing quite like using a paper map.

Good video. Been using this technique for years while camping. You should also mention that this indicates True South and not Magnetic South. Also, the compass app in most smartphones is defaulted to Magnetic and can be changed in the settings to show True .
@LotsaFreshAir11 күн бұрын
Glad you liked it. It's always a question of how much info to put in to videos so that the most people, get the most out of it. Magnetic/True (and even Grid) discussions can confuse folk who aren't at that level. I just wanted to make this a general vid and keep it simple. ;)

Rule 7 boarders on gatekeeping and I feel we should be more aware of how we post rather than trying not to post at all. Nature is there for us all to enjoy and we shouldn't keep anything secret because nobody is more deserving of nature than anyone else. This might be a hot take but i hope its not too controversial.
@LotsaFreshAir11 күн бұрын
Ahh, not too much of a hot take leon - but I find it a tricky and complex issue. There are many places that have had massive visitation since their location has been shared on social media - environments that can't handle the foot traffic, waste, parking, etc. Some of them are home to fragile habitats (that get trampled) and the visitors can unwittingly bring in invasive species on their shoes.

hiii I would love to do this track in later and want to ask something, actually I had done the trip to cradle mountain few time, so is it the first day have the most higher attitude gain? and about the camping , I saw there are wood platform there so how can we set out camp stable on the ground? Usually if it is on a soil , I do with a nail at the end of the rod and make it tight
@LotsaFreshAir11 күн бұрын
The first day is one of the hardest, not only for the altitude gain, but also for the weight of all your food in your pack! Tents must use the wood platforms and they provide chains that attach to your tent to pull them tight.

Hi Caro, thanks for the Video. Another area that I’ve always talk to people about is environmental fitness, where one learns to tolerate the different climatic conditions. It’s easy to get fit in an air conditioned gym but throw in some climate controls, such as heat, humidity, wind, cold and rain and all that fitness comes undone.

I’ll tell you the short cut we use in the Army, bypassing the pointers for on the fly while you’re walking. As you imagine the line down the axis of the Crux to the ground. Hold your fingers up, thumb and pointer, on either end of the cross to gain its length. Like you’re holding it. Because what you’re after is simply three lengths of the cross down that line, is the same point as where the pointer line bisects the line. With your finger held like a calliper. Go 1, 2, 3, cross lengths down, then straight down to the ground, that’s bang on South. Cut out the pointer bisection, it’s simply three cross lengths. Quicker. So once you’ve been taught the correct way, you can use this method. There’s one other thing you forgot to explain. On rare occasions the cross is pointing upwards or away from the horizon. I’ve seen people get extremely confused and they bisect it upside down and do not find South.
@mr.k16116 ай бұрын
If it is not facing the horizon, the method does not change. You just draw a line down to the horizon from the point it intersects.
