The video was perfect to showcase your outstanding paintings! I have one other painter/illustrator I love as much, Kinuko Yamabe Craft. I collected all her books back in the day, but now I'm too old for collecting or I would certainly have all yours as well. At least I can buy as many of your coloring books as I can finish. Thank YOU for all your videos. I wish there were more & that they were longer, where you finish an entire page. Phooey on that half-hour limited attention span meme. There are many like me who watch 2- & 3-hour videos of our favorite artists. But yours are teaching me what I want to learn so mission accomplished!

Best fairy wings I've seen!! I respectfully disagree that KZbin viewers lose interest in long videos. I've watched many long coloring videos &, believe me, there are a lot of them out there as well as long multi-media ones. Other well-known artists with large numbers of subscribers do this on a regular basis. So I would at least start with an hour long video to check out the response. Or at least post more. A lot of people would be happy. I, for one, would love to see more of your outstanding tutorials from your awesome coloring books. Thank YOU!!

It’s a beautiful book. But there’s so little to colour with the extent of this grayscale. What’s the point lol. To each his own I guess.
@RuthSanderson Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. There is lots to color in grayscale pictures. Basically everything. You color right over the grays with colors of light, median and darker tones, following the tonal pattern. The gray gives the colors a base but the picture will end up looking full color, not gray. Take a look at my tutorials if you are unfamiliar with grayscale coloring. Take a look at other comments too.

This tutorial is amazing! I already had this book and had been too intimidated to start it... FYI fellow colorists--Ruth's greyscale books are SO good. Many others are cheap, pixelated, too light or too dark. Hers are perfect, such warm gorgeous images.

Question. what kind of paper is the image printed on to & what type of pencils? I've tried greyscale colouring with cheap paper and cheap pencils and it isn't working well at all.
@RuthSanderson Жыл бұрын
I like Springhill Bristol card stock, 70 lbs , Be sure it is not the smooth finish. I like Prismacolor pencils, but any better brand will work better than cheap ones, which tend to be too hard. Look for sales and coupons.

Almost all coloring books are 8 1/2 x 11 size. I think many card makers would love a greyscale book to be able to use them on size 5x7 and 4 1/4 x 5 size cards or the new tall cards and book marks of Christmas pictures and one of cards for all occasions. It would be nice to have different sizes on one page. This would be a dream come true for many of us. Your work is so beautiful. Would you ever consider doing this for us. Hugs

Hi Ruth, I cannot find the first demo of this greyscale tutorial. I saw at one time you had a video teaching how to colour hreyscale you were colouring from a "Vintage" book and it was roses you were colouring. I understood greyscale from that video of you colouring roses in a vase or basket. Do you still have that video? I so want to learn!

Interesting way to develop color on greyscale. I have primarily worked with line art, where I add my own shadows, and am just getting into coloring commercial greyscale pieces. I usually scan the pieces and reduce darker greyscale pictures to a lighter greyscale. Using your layering technique, I should be able to skip that step now. Thanks for sharing your technique for coloring greyscale.

One tip when coloring greyscale pages. If you create your own with images. Your own or from online. Do not use a laser printer. If you have any darker portion you have a greater portion of toner overlayed on the paper. Any color pencil you lay down is being layed down over the toner.

Thank you for posting these grayscale videos.. and for the free downloads on your website. After scouting around different coloring youtube channels and purchasing a few coloring books by various authors, as well as pencils, I found your channel and it was a relief. I've only recently gotten interested in adult coloring, and it has been a surprise that there is much to learn. I've also enjoyed learning about your art and books--I ordered a used (but good condition) library copy of A Castle Full of Cats and may send it to my niece's young children. Just as long as it doesn't give my niece's husband any ideas about getting another large dog (German Shepherds are his favorite)... with their last GS my niece found the shedding level difficult to deal with!

Thanks for your note! I am glad you are enjoying my videos. I have not done any in a few years, but hope to do more at some point. I have a Facebook coloring group if you are interested in seeing how other people color. And if you sign up for my newsletter I send them out just a few times a year if/when I have a new book out. My next one will be Birds, and possibly a Teddy Bear's Christmas, though I might not get to that this year. The coloring book of A Castle Full of Cats might be a good Grayscale one to start with. Up to you, though.

@@RuthSanderson Thank you for the info/suggestions. I hadn't known about the group on Facebook... so I will look into that. And thank you for telling me about your newsletter. I did print a few of the free grayscale downloads from your website--printed on colored pencil drawing paper--so I may start there and and watch the accompanying video as a guide. As someone who knits, my ears perked up when you talked about coloring being similar to knitting in the repetitiveness... "I can do that!" Thanks again!

I’m wayyyyyyyyy late to this party!! But, I’ve had A LOT of Tabbies & something that people don’t notice or always notice. (Most)Tabbies have the letter “M” just above the eyes & between their ‘eyebrows’. There’s quite a bit of lore as to why. There is also a video I saw not to long ago, about Tabbies. If you ever run across it? Watch it! It’s interesting. I was right about the “M”😎!!! I’m really just starting w/grayscale. I use to do some, but, there wasn’t a lot of grayscale then. I’m back to coloring again! After a long hiatus. A lot of things have stayed the same, & a lot of things have change….or are just a bit different. So, here I gooooo…….
