Can someone explain to me why to do all this? Like in my mind vim is for working on computers remotely where you wouldn’t be able to just set all this up every time and IDEs are just more convenient for developing on your own computer.

you know how you know where all the light switches are in your house even when its dark? I think the general idea is that if you overcome the initial hurdle of learning all of this + spending the time to configure everything to be exactly how you want it to be - muscle memory will kick in and make you extremely productive. Its definitely overkill at first though. If you're a new developer don't feel overwhelmed by people doing this kinda stuff and feel like you have to do the same.

Dear Primeagen! That's my first sentient comment on KZbin. I want to tell you how much I appreciate the things what you are shared. I'm a C++ dev and hopefully you won't delete my message just because of C++, lol. I watch you for a pretty long time and you helps me to get motivated with my job. Thanks for all the stuff you are doing. I am grateful for sharing this part with belief and addiction and I really hope it will be a good example for me in changing my life to better. I know that it sounds kinda nonsense, sometimes I preach in Kazakshtan Lutheran Church, and if you don't mind, may I share your story with our congregation? If you answer no, that's completely fine, I will not do that, but I think it can motivate not only me. All best wishes to you! thanks!

The thing about learning abstract concepts and complex systems is you have to *experience* them. You have to run into an issue, have a need, something to accomplish. Once you do that a bunch of times, you’ll find that all of the seemingly random concepts and weird tools and lingo suddenly click, and you now can put them into practice as you see fit. Hell, I didn’t get why I’d want to make my own array for outputs in powershell until I ran into a function that did not return the original input, and needed to have my input and the function output on the same line. Suddenly arrays made sense. Just silly little things like that to contextualize a concept and get your head wrapped around it.

It’s extremely misleading. They’re saying you’ll learn to code, sure. But not at the competency level you need to be useful.

I understand both sides. When i first learned programming from nothing i learned the basics in about 2 weeks and was then able to code further ideas on my own. I definitely still had so so much more to learn and am still learning and if i compare myself to back then i basically knew nothing. But that 2 week course gave me all the ground work to know how to figure out anything else i wanna do.
