You did a great job explaining what you were hearing/experiencing with the flutes. I would have loved to hear you on the Miazawa just for reference. Personally? I disliked the Muramatsu EX when I tried it. The SD model is far more impressive tonally and I really liked the key speed. But ultimately (and price was the decisive factor for me) I went with an Armstrong 800 in the end--it's attack and tone could not be beaten particularly in its price range. It's obnoxiously heavy though. My Yami 587 (which I I love for the same reasons you liked the Yami you tried, it's just easy to play) can be a bit like blowing a tuba in its 3rd and 4th octaves. But, I have to hand it to the Yamahas--they hold their tuning better than any other flute I've ever owned or tried.

I tried to Azumi and Di Zhao out of this list. I chose the Di Zhao, but the Azumi was a close contender. It came down to price and I didn’t care for the Z cut headjoint on the Azumi. Both flutes are really good.

Well, i've tried a pearl 695, amadeus 780 se, and now i have the azumi z3, for me the pearl i loved, in tone color, but low register is really, really hard, i have small hands, and it just doesn't work, high notes where super easy though, then the amadeus is really heavy for me, and the mechanics also, takes more effort, but low register comes out good, and high as well, but harder then the pearl, also i have to play it more higer on my lip, to get a proper tone, witch makes me squeeze more. Then the azumi, i really don't like, it's very light though, and low register comes easy, but anything above high E is hard for me, G even starts to crack. And the tone is to thin for me. What i did is contact a flute repair shop, what he said to me gives me an other inside to choose my next flute, he said that a pearl, ofthen needs more repairs, and he suggested a sonare, so i'm gonna try that one, hopefully it will play easy in high and low register.

Great video. Thank you! I tried the Altus 1107 and yes, it is fuzzy and feels horrible in your hand. The Haynes Q2 is not that different from the Q3 and is stuffy. The Powell Sonare 905 notes crack when you push the air. I also tired the Miyazawa 402 heavy wall with MX2 headjoint, and it's quite similar to the Yamaha 677, but the Yamaha is responsive, clear, easy, and has enough (0.17) reistant - warm tone in all registers for half the price of the Miyazawa. I am finally HAPPY with my Yamaha 677! 🧡

Indeed. The Azumi is also not a standard cooper scale flute like the other flutes you played. The z-cut headjoint is the only thing holding the AZ3 back. I played one ( in-line ) with the z-cut headjoint and hated it. Then, the lovely lady of the flute shop put a brannen headjoint in it and low and behold, it was a different instrument altogether. Quite a pleasure to play, actually. And yes gold has a warmer sound, I wouldnt say fuzzier but most certainly darker and significantly more hollower than a silver riser. The other factor people dont consider is in-line keywork versus off-set key work. In-line flutes tend to play and sound a bit better than the off-set. I dont understand the science behind it, but I have 22 years of demoing to back it up.

The most interesting thing I learned through this process was that really, none of these flutes were bad. In this range, I think the choice comes down to personal preference and playing style. So my dislike of the fuzziness is someone else's dream flute! ☺️ Thank you for watching!

Congratulations on the Yamaha 677. I love my Yamaha 684 I've had for 10 years. One thing you might be want try experimenting with is different crowns. I bought an aftermarket crown that made a nice difference. Dynamics both loud and soft were a bit easier to play.

@@TheFlyingPuffin I'll definitely be posting once I seriously start to narrow things down. :) The only worry I have is that I'm not advanced like you and I just hope I can test everything to find my favorite flute without realizing something I missed years down the road.

I know how you feel! What I've realized myself is there is (unfortunately) no Forever Flute. We can only work with what level we're at right now, and down the line we may be better or just different players and like different things in a flute (and then just hope that we have the funds to fulfill those different needs!) That being said, do try to get a teacher or someone else to test them with you (listen to you playing and also play the flutes themselves) since they can tell you things that you may not be able to hear. Even a non-flute player can be very helpful to hear things we can't!
@kryzak123
@kryzak123 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheFlyingPuffin That's super helpful advice, thank you! Yeah, I have my teacher helping me select, and I'm just taking my time to narrow down the brands I like first before testing them more in depth (if they allow a take home option). I probably should wait a couple more years until I outgrow my Trevor James 10x, but I'm also taking the flute learning pretty seriously so I might as well get the flute I'll be using for a long long time (since I'll only be a hobbyist flute player). :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us; this was such an excellent comparison! You featured some of the models I’ve been eyeing for purchase, myself, and your thorough review of each flute left me with little to no questions! I am curious as to which instrument you ended up with when it was all said and done (whether from here or your other trial videos) and also your general opinion of the 795 vs the 700 specifically?
@TheFlyingPuffin
@TheFlyingPuffin 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching, I'm so happy it has been helpful! I of course did so much extra testing and playing off camera that I couldn't include so I was worried these videos wouldn't show them clearly enough. Between the Pearl 795 and the Di Zhao 700 I'd recommend the Di Zhao, personally, because it produces notes in the 1st octave so much better than the Pearl. However, my mom was deciding between the Di Zhao 600 and 700 and opted for the 600 because it was very similar but was just missing some of the extra trill keys, rollers, and fancy case -- so give the 600 a try as well if you're considering a Di Zhao! And in the end I chose the Yamaha 677, and I'm so pleased with it after several months! I think I played that one in my 3rd review video, and discussed my reasons for choosing it over the Muramatsu EX in the 4th video.

@@TheFlyingPuffin How well does the AZ3 compare to a Yamaha 500 or 600 series flute? I say 500 series first cus they are close in price if the AZ3 has all the bells and whistles. I hear the AZ3 is light weight but I question how well its made. I'd like to hear your input on these thanks.
