@@ContactCoach I thought he was just an average physical one dimensional club player when he first played for England and lacked the necessary edge but he seems quicker, more nimble and his handling and awareness has improved all of which you need at the top level. Newport's 13 overstimated his inside teammate and didn't work to cover the first threatening option (inside looped ball) Should have stayed with number 12 and let his outside defender cover the threat out wide. Also the last defender (is it 11?) has a bad body position so he gets bypassed without even the ability to tackle. They should have gotten a tackle somehow, probably the defensive play should be catching all the inside attackers and looping runners and leave the space out wide for the 14 and 15 (the widest one marking 2 players in zone) and then after getting that tackle the number 9 has to run like a madman to re-position himself on the first line, me thinks

1) keep making this kind of thing. 2) who's the Dragons player left marking the 10 instead of Adams? And is he to 'blame' here or is there something else Dragons could have done? This looks almost undefendable the way it's presented...
@ContactCoach
@ContactCoach 9 күн бұрын
Thanks! I am glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for taking the time to watch. The disconnect between Dragons 12 and 13 is where the trouble happened. The 12 was biting in and the 13 was starting to go wide and that made the gap even bigger. Maybe a tighter connection between 12 and 13 with a view of pushing the attack wide could have helped the Dragons here. Another aspect is that 10,12 and 13 all went on to their heels (not a dynamic movement/tackling position) so that added to the issues. I am sure the 'D' coach will not be happy looking back at this one.
@HuwDeMann
@HuwDeMann 8 күн бұрын
If the Dragons 13 had stayed connected though, would Cardiff have used the 10 running wide instead and had a 3v2 wider out? Or was the ball always going to Adams do you think?

What would be your opinion of the defensive mistakes that was almost as interesting?
@ContactCoach
@ContactCoach 9 күн бұрын
Good question! There was definitely a disconnect with 12 and 13 getting on their heels. Perhaps 13 could have stayed a bit closer to his inside man to force the wide play and, therefore, the opportunity to push across. Also, once the linebreak happened, there was a bit of an overchase from #11, with his hips facing the sideline, making him vulnerable to the step, which happened. What are your thoughts?

It’s worth pointing out the fundamental problem for the defending team which makes an attacking line out so dangerous in the 22. The blindside winger (Mack Hanson I believe) has GOT to stay on his wing to defend the kicking threat. But his opposite man (11, try scorer) can come over to give the man advantage. It is the building block of so many of these moves.
@ContactCoach
@ContactCoach 10 күн бұрын
Yes, it's an interesting one. Sometimes, teams will add the winger to the main defensive line and have the 9 cover the blindside and backfield.

Ross is good player. He can run moves really well. His one big failing is that he offers little running threat. He either won’t or can’t make breaks himself so the defence can almost ignore him and concentrate on the next man out. If he had a turn of pace and an eye for a gap, he has the skills to put lads through left right and centre.

You say that but then you have coaches into professional rugby who can't even set up their team to do this so sometimes the "ordinary" is done by clarifying the game and giving options to players. If I remember well and if I am not biased, it was Toulouse who (re)initiated this trend of such set piece try from tap penalty at 5m from the line. Indeed, one or two years ago, they did it in top 14 against my club (Racing), and I thought at the moment "mmm, there is an intersting idea here, surely it will be developed soon, and it will inspire teams such as Leinster or Ireland if they are not already doing it".
