@itsnotokgolf26 күн бұрын
k so i was kinda wrong lmao, but a little right too... in that i think these two feelings go hand in hand, from the top of my backswing, bending knees and reconnecting the back elbow at the same time and then its like the rotation and wrist release team up together to hit the ball

How about your iron distance from the ball ?
@dogloverjb6873Ай бұрын
if you come out of your posture ( stand taller - "early extension" ) during your forward swing ( downswing ) ...you will get onto your toes.... Stay in posture during the downswing thru impact and you will keep your weight on your heels naturally thru the swing. It's a lot easier to think about your posture height than whats happening in your feet.... Keeping the swing simple and uncomplicated.

This makes so much sense. I'm 73 and can't move the way I did at 43. Two huge questions: Can I setup differently for the driver/fairway woods than I do irons? I.E. I'd be standing further away for driver than I would for irons - or should it be the same distance for each? And can I put more weight forward (still on the heel) on the irons to promote a downward strike than on the driver, where more weight would be on the trail heel to promote an up upward strike? Thanks! (PS - bought your book - it just got delivered, so if its easier to just say "see page x" than to type a reply - that's cool:)

Ben Hogan is the greatest, in my opinion. What people don't understand is that the secret is hard work. Ben played 36 holes or more a day. He hit millions of folf balls and had unlimited access to golf clubs. That is the difference between pros and amateur. I have read 5 lessons a lot. I also have around 25 golf books, and Bens books is the best one of all. But if you must know what made his swing, you have to read. I bet over 90% of you missed the most important detail of his beautiful swing.

You just need to keep your head over the right foot and dont be afraid th use your pivoting hips as a pendulum.
@davidmcnamara32435 ай бұрын
On the backswing, he moves the whole of the golf club and dosent give the clubhead chance, to gain too much momentum, that it will later dissipate, in order to escape from the " rotating mass ", instead, the energy transmitted to the shaft creating flex! He appears to start the downswing, by planting the left foot, but he is infact dropping the unweighted left hip, which gravity drops the rotating mass, sending the already flexed shaft in the opposite direction, during transition, before it flexes the opposite way on the downswing. The holy grail of the golfswing, is to hold shaft flex into impact: releasing that flex out of the divot. Like a leaf spring : the flex is held by both extreme changes in direction, mechanically coupled and moving in phaze, with the freefalling mass . He is not pulling, or pushing the club. Neither, is he throwing. He is using the club like a WHIP !!!! Pure genius 😊

Hogan's Five Lessons should have been called "This is how You Dony Hook a Golf Ball". He even stated in an interview once that the lessons were for a "fella who hits a big hook". That being said the book is stiil about 90% accurate. For slicers, you want the grip a bit more in yhe fingers and stronger, as in two knuckles. At the top of the backseing don't cup your wrist, let it bow the other way. Other than that the book is golden.

Complete nonsense. My father-in-law was a golf pro and I was struggling with my game and wasn’t playing enough. He gave me Ben Hogan‘s book, I studied it and practiced the grip and swing and went from shooting over 120 to Breaking 120 then breaking 110 then breaking 100 and then breaking 90 all in one summer using only his teaching and the Ben Hogan book. Hogan says the more pressure (situationally) you put on the swing the better it gets and the more reliable it is

You're only missing one, maybe two components. The main one was Moe tilted at address somewhere between 15° to 25°, (depending on the club) which I believe contributed to him squatting through the swing on the downswing when his lagging leg went from straight to bent and slightly rotated, as it followed his torso through the rotation. This forces him to drop his body height naturally. To do otherwise would probably cause injury. He mentions this squatting down move in several videos, and you can obviously tell he does it on the rear view as well as front view of videos of him. Of course Moe was a horrible teacher, but most golf instructors are. Their words have subjective meaning, or are confusing without context, change from person-to-person, and don't align with the biomechanics of the human anatomy.

What exactly are we referring to as the “dip?” The lower body action? If so, the knees and hips are clearly on their way down and left before, and through, impact, it just hasn’t bottomed out yet. Are we not hitting down “through” the ball just because the club continues to descend to its low point after it strikes the ball? I’ve been in agreement with an every one of your videos I’ve seen up to this point, but either I’m just not seeing it the way you are, or this a bit of a reach. I don’t think you can separate the end of the hip action from the entire move, which is what I would say people are calling the “dip.” 🤔

Can't move away from the ball if you're on the toes or balls. Nor can your body turn effectively. The point to be made is that keeping the weight moving toward the heels doesn't influence ball flight but allows for it. If you're concentrating on the heels and you're hitting the ball funny, check the hands and arms first before you mess up your pivot. Sorry, it is possible to do this. In your routine/process, if you tap the heels during your waggle and then start your swing by "slamming" the trail heel into the ground, the natural biometric response will be to "smash" the left heel down to start the downswing. It's a natural response you've set up in your feet. Foot rhythm if you will. Try it. Viktor Hovlind does that, very obviously.
@jamesandresen49276 ай бұрын
Totally agree with your focus on distance from ball at setup; I tried it and instantly rotated properly and in balance, no early extension, fixed in 5 minutes after 15 years of failed teachings - terrific. Question - Just wondering if by standing farther from the ball, would it likely cause the lie angle of your clubs to need to be redone?

What most don't understand is that weight forward promotes a steeper swing above the address established plane. Having the weight favoring the heels helps the pivot work as it should.

Dave, are the Pro's back on their heels because they get in their flexion and rotation? Meaning is being on the heels necessary because they setup with arms hanging down? If that is true, then why is it still necessary to have weight on heels for a setup for impact address?
@theamateurgolfersdilemma726 ай бұрын
Virtually every good player is on their heels as forward momentum toward the ball is death. But I cannot say one way or another regarding your questions.
@BroncoYeller6 ай бұрын
@@theamateurgolfersdilemma72 Dave, it might just be that regardless if you do the pro setup, or setup for impact, the arms are going to be 'out there' at impact. The hanging arm setup has to move back to allow the arms to extend. The setup for impact player just has to maintain the setup radius. And because the weight of the arms swinging out in space pulls on the body, there has to be what David Lee calls a counterfall to maintain equilibrium. I think that might be it. By the way, enjoyed your book very much. Gold mine!

Brilliant. Watched many of your videos in 2 days. I have a question for you, if a Golfer lacks rotation skill (me) and doesnt early extend (me) and has a claasic arms straight down at address (me) what symptons might we see? Could be Heel strikes and hands even lower at impact?

As a lifetime amateur I first place my upper arms across my chest and then bend my body from my hip joints as I lay my club head perpendicular to the ball. After having aimed to start my ‘upswing’ I simply use the fast twitch muscles surrounding the trail side of my hip and for my downswing I use the fast twitch muscles surrounding my lead hip to pull it and my entire lead side out of the way to complete my downswing . Another words as I swing my club my only thoughts are twitch right hip/ twitch left hip and the magic behind my swing has last me a lifetime of fun and satisfaction. Of course my putting sucks. 😂 🥂😊👍Cheers

I teach the exact same way you describe it. My clients all say the same thing. It feels weird. But, keeping your arms away from your body clears the hips like said because we can’t do what the PROS do. Based on their body type. I teach to the individuals body type. Most amateurs just wanna make contact. I find this is the simplest way to create their desired outcome. It’s about the client’s abilities.

Be careful, the flying elbow polices are out there like the cupping of the lead wrist as they are demons lol. They are both good to use just depends on the individual because the ones that say they are both bad are hooking/slicing the ball with whatever they consider proper right now so who are they to judge 🤣🤣 fly away elbows and if you still say it's bad go ask the GOAT, Jack Nicklaus his opinion.

You are 100% correct. Very few people have the postural balance and hip internal rotation to play golf like Hogan. Most amateurs would be better off setting up with the club on the shoulder plane like Moe Norman.

Dave I've been absorbing your book, which is fantastic. I've been working on trying to get on the heels more. I think I've done alot of damage to my lead knee and back by rotating on the forefoot of my lead foot my whole golf career. Today when I played I made good progress on staying on the heels. I almost felt like a hammer thrower. I have a question. In trying to find the balance, and playing the ball further away from me, I experimented with trying to keep good posture in my thoracic portion of my back. I was trying to not hunch over as I setup to the shot. I found that by doing that I was able to comfortably keep on the heels throughout the swing. Your thoughts? P.S. Felt zero back pain and stiffness both during and after the round. I can't recall the last time that happened.
