This might be a silly question , have you ever thought of keeping lobsters that pass the gauge but are soft and putting them into a holding tank onshore until the shell hardens ? Or is this too time and cost prohibitive

Brilliant vlog Barry, (& Jeff). I know you can't show details of your Lobby buyer. I'm just interested in how quick your catch is picked up after you land it? Do you have to take it to the buyer? Barry, in the 270 a day that we haul here we must throw back at least 200 or more baby lobsters like the one you showed. It's a great sign, but I've never seen that before, not that many. And we are also seeing a lot of juvenile females with berries, also way more than ever. Things are definitely changing. Not sure if it's for the good, but we'll see!
@onemanandhisboat6 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment. You are absolutely right. Years ago, the berried hens were all a good size, now the berries are any size...makes you wonder if the spieces are trying to recope the numbers that we as fishermen are taking?🤷♂️ That's one theory anyway, and their certainly a lot more ideas on the pier on why they are so young and so many. The lack of fish on the ground has a huge part to play in the lobster fishery as well as the temp of the waters chasing most of the lobsters predators away.😁👌 Like you said, time will tell if it's a good thing or not, but I know one thing, the lobbies are going to outlast the fishermen 😞 All the best. Baz.😉👍
@jtlobster12346 күн бұрын
@@onemanandhisboat absolutely right. We had the cod population drop very low a long time ago due to overfishing, but the government gutted the trawler fleet and now Gloucester only has a few left, however the cod have rebounded tremendously and now we throw back at least 10-20 large cod per trip that get into the traps. Crazy how much things are changing. We also have been getting almost 100 lbs. of Jonah crabs per trip, which we can sell, but we only get 65 cents/lb.

Love the videos Barry👍 I was wondering why you don't put a cabin on the boat ? Is it because boat is quite small and a cabin would be restrictive or do you just prefer an open boat? Cheers
@onemanandhisboat6 күн бұрын
Hi Darren.thank you so much for your kind comment and question. And you've basically answered it yourself 🤣🤣😁👌 The boat is small at only being 21ft total length. And I've seen these boats with wheelhouses before, and it will take up 1 3rd of the boat which is a heelish waste. Also I'm a BIG laddie and would struggle to get in these wheelhouses designed for these sized boats. And finally, I have had a vessel set up this way before, and just like the Lynsey B, she was a dream to work,so that why I went for the design I have, practical, for me and my type of fishing giving plenty of working space, after all, that's what we are out there to do.😉👍😁👌 I hope that answers your question for you. Thank you so much for your support. Have a wonderful weekend. All the best. Baz.😉👍

Really struggling to understand why your chucking your bait out and why it’s not all being eaten by the lobsters? I have pots with bait bands and pots with bait bags and after a few days soak there’s barely ever bait left and if there is new bait goes on top, could you tell me why you throw bait out please?
@onemanandhisboat6 күн бұрын
Hi Dominic Thank you for your question. The lobsters do eat the bait. With the frozen herring, all they eat is the guts out of them, especially when the pots are getting hauled every day. We also have posh lobsters at our coast, and they are really fussy about types of bait and how long they are in the creel. Basically, the fresher, the better with our lot.🤷♂️ it's been this way at our coast since fishing began. So as I've said in previous vlogs, depending on where you fish and how you fish is all determined on your lobsters, and how they like to be caught, and trust me it's all different throughout the country.😉👍 And this is how we fish our southeast wee corner of Scotland. 🦞😁👌 I hope that answers your question. All the best. Baz.😉👍
@dominicwashington36336 күн бұрын
@@onemanandhisboat thanks for your reply baz it’s always baffled me but here in north wales everyone uses stinky salted bait for lobster, but I recently bought a new boat from the east coast and he said lobsters don’t like salted bait but that baffled me as I catch very well on it now I understand our lobsters all have a different cuisine 😂😂 good luck fishing pal 🦞👍💪

Well done on getting to the 300. I have only viewed a few of them but have enjoyed these. Why use fathoms rather than, as on maritime charts and tide tables, metres ?
@onemanandhisboat6 күн бұрын
Hi Jimmy. Thank you so much for your kind comment and your question. Fathoms have been used by the fishermen at Dunbar since the dawn of time, and who I'm I to change tradition, especially since I boast that I'm a traditional fisherman. Meters are there for the mariner that can't work out what a fathom is. A simplified manner on how to read a chart.🙈🙈🤣🤣🤣😁👌 I hope that answers your question, Jimmy.😁👌 Keep up the watching, and thank you so much for your support. Have a great weekend. All the best. Baz.😉👍

@onemanandhisboat I do know what a fathom, and a cable etc ,are but having recently re done some RYA training, I am now converted to metres. I love the idea of the buy a lobster freedom thing too by the way.
@onemanandhisboat6 күн бұрын
@jimmyjohnstone5878 meters are good if you're doing travelling and going to strange ports etc. With fathoms, all you have to do is double it for meters😁👌 Our Larry the Lobster was a concept thought of by Jeff, and it seems to be doing rather well.😍😁👌 Have a fantastic evening, Jimmy.
