I was with my boyfriend in a park at one of their bbq grills and watched him fire his pipes in a coffee can kiln. I had never seen anything like that before. It was pretty amazing. Everything came out perfect and I have been interested in all the different methods of firing clay ever since. I am sure he would have taught me had I asked but sadly he died of a heart attack less than two years later. It was a great experience to witness and learn from him.

Tony, my question is: Is the fluting of these Clovis points done as the last step to a completed point? Or are they or can be fluted and earlier and then finishing edge work done in the halfting areas? Thank for any information. Ralph Snyder 👍 😊
@tonysoaresnativeclays143420 күн бұрын
@@RSnyder-vx8li yes some can be fluted a bit earlier, but most have just a bit of retouch after fluting. This is a way a friend fluted and just wanted to bring it to light. I’ve seen a fella flute with a similar method since and looks more promising.

That's some refined technique. I imagine it takes a good balance of pressures to snap the blades off proper, even with the genius setup.

Hi, great video! just wanted to know if i start with moist clay, would i need to dry it out first, break it apart, then mix it with freshwater to make the solution? Thanks!
@tonysoaresnativeclays14342 ай бұрын
@@gracepea5798 other way depending on how clean your clay is
@gracepea57982 ай бұрын
@@tonysoaresnativeclays1434 Sorry, not sure if I understand. So if its clean, then I can just mix the moist soil directly with water? and if its not clean, it would be better to dry and break apart and then mix with water? Thanks again!
@tonysoaresnativeclays14342 ай бұрын
@@gracepea5798 yes if mixing like this it must be totally dry first, then let soak. Try mixing in a 5 gallon bucket first before trying a cement mixer

It is a cool process. Sometimes I wonder how the process itself was discovered. I mean, was there a DaVinci of clay making, for example? How does one come across a method of screening materials out without modern mesh screens? At some point, someone must of figured out that you need to filter, filter, filter.

I guess this is one way I could replicate the parabolic bottom found in many of the Anderson phase vessels dug up at Sunwatch Village archeological site in Dayton Ohio. These vessels were constructed with the paddle and anvil technique, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get the elongated parabola shape found on larger vessels found at the site.
