Thanks Mike for the info. I know this is two years later on my comment, but I also wanted to add that the list of sensors and telescopes can be edited to delete all of the populated list when first downloading the program. That way you only have your cameras and telescopes on the list, saving the scrolling through a bunch of choices that you don't need. Very slick. I have been using Stellarium for a while but had not been taking advantage of these options. I always just went to Telescopious for my scope and sensor views but this is a pretty cool function on Stellarium. Thanks for the video tutorial ! Cheers from Moab Utah... ;-)

It will run on a MacBook with an M1, M2 or M3 chip. Download it from the App Store and it should work fine. It won’t work with previous generations of MacBooks.

6.5 minutes into video you show how to hover and pull the left side bar, then selecting top button to enter our location. I was not able to do either though my landscape did match yours. Thank you, Mike, that is a really great suggestion that I also got in one of your classes! We all enjoy seeing the constellations in the night sky and this really helps to see them on the photos as well! It's not intuitive why that works. Here is my attempt at an explanation, let me know if it makes sense: The bright stars are so bright that some of their light gets clipped on the sensor. The dimmer stars don't get clipped, so the relationship of bright to dim stars is off in the picture. The diffusion filter doesn't do much to the dim stars, but it spreads the light of the bright stars out a bit. As a result, less or no clipping occurs, and the relationship of the brightness of bright and dim stars stays the same as in the real night sky.
@MikeShawPhotography Жыл бұрын
Hans - great to hear from you again! Your description is exactly how I interpret it. I view the total light output from each star as the integral of its brightness vs position plot along an imaginary line intersecting the star. Without the filter the curve is very sharp and clips. With the filter, the curve is spread out, with the same area underneath it, so that the peak is now not clipped so the sensor can register its color. Plus since it's speed out, it appears larger.

The Stallarium is supposed to represent the night-sky as it is but I have noticed that the Milky Way’s intensity also vary over years. I live in the Southern Hemisphere, from 2021, and it might have stated sooner, to now the Milky Way is hardly visible. But I am told it is not possible. Can someone verify if the Milky Way’s intensity vary over long periods and what is the cycle period for intensity changes, if any.
@MikeShawPhotography Жыл бұрын
Any intensity variation would be the result of an earthly phenomenon, possibly light pollution
@siddharth-wy2kp2 жыл бұрын
When I start the app, it always shows the milky way band, no matter what time of the year, is it really there or it's just a decorative prop?

It's always there, just that we see a different part of it depending on where we are in our orbit.

This was a Kp of 5 - 6. Always worth a try; the clouds may part! And a bright aurora will be visible through partly cloudy skies.

This was the first space sim I've ever had. I'm still on a quest to find one that works. When I cycle through the sun then the 9 planets stellarium tells me venus is the 3rd planet (lol). I always thought earth was the 3rd planet. I have bought 4 space sims now and all of them seem to be in some kind of beta state...unfinished. I paid $49.99 for sky safari pro and it's all kinds of broken. I'm trying space engine now... wish me luck!!!

I am currently subscribed to Adobe's Photography plan. I have the option to install both LrC and LR and I would like to install just one as they do pretty much the same thing. The problem is, I can't decide which one to use. I've been installing/reinstalling LrC but I think LR is more streamlined specially for beginners. I'm in no way a pro.. I don't even have a proper camera. I'm just using my phone for photography. Any tips?

I am in process of buying a faster lens for shooting night sky views, and trying to decide between the Samyang XP 50mm f1.2 and 35mm f1.2. I have a Canon 6D (Full frame), and a T6i (APS-C). After watching this video, my gut feeling is that the 35mm will be a better choice for me; On the 6D body, it has 64.5° FOV, and on the T6i body, 44.4° FOV , just slightly narrower than the 46.6° FOV of the 50mm on the 6D body. So I get a relatively wide FOV on a full-frame body, but medium telephoto on an APS-C body. And if I need to zoom in even tighter, I have a very sharp Rokinon 85mm f1.4 that has a 17.7° FOV on my 60D or T6i cameras.
@MikeShawPhotography Жыл бұрын
The 35 mm will give you more options, in my opinion. They're both terrific lenses.

How do the lenses work, As the number goes up your view gets better or worse? eg 500 vs 200 mm lens which is better?
@MikeShawPhotography2 жыл бұрын
As the focal length increases, the field of view decreases, ie you zoom in. So a 500 mm lens will give you bigger moon than a 200 mm lens.
