My Grandfather would build a bon fire and place my Grand mothers skillets and pots on it later they would scrub them and season them with pig lard and salt.

In my opinion that's not a Dutch Oven! That's a pot. A Dutch oven has 3 legs and a sunken lid!

I placed all of my old cast iron cooking pans in the oven and ran the oven on self cleaning mode. After I vacuumed up the mess I covered the pans with Flax oil and placed them, upside down, and baked at 400 degrees for an hour. I left the pans in the oven, until the oven cooled off. I did this four or five times. Some of the pans are Griswold...from my mom in the 1950's. Every year I add one coat of the same oil. They never rust, and I can let yhem soak with water, overnight, and clean them the next day. My large cast iron pot is a Griswold also.

If you throw the pan in a fire for a couple hours it is easier to clean, really all you have to do is wash off the ashes, then season the pan. much easier!!

I'm trying to do a pot like you just did, plus a smaller one. I scrubbed and scrubbed, but it isn't getting nowhere as clean as you got that one. I have done it twice, too. It looked just like the one you did before but only half as clean. Are you sure you aren't swapping pans.😂 on the other pan, it has what looks like weld splatter. But this being my first go around with cast iron, I don't know a lot about it. My sos pad aren't the gritty one like you used. I have some of those, but I was afraid it might damage the pot. I guess I'll try those, but I don't think it will help the beads in the bottom of one of the pots. Do you have any suggestions, or is it just no good?

So cleaning the vinegar bath off of the grill is done with water, and don't fret about it showing rust? Just once you dry it in the oven or grill apply your oil for seasoning?? Do this 2 or 3 times the seasoning process. I have that same little tabletop grill and it got pretty rusty but it is in the vinegar bath now and looking pretty good, so far. Let me add I used my cooler it was the only thing I had deep enough to emerge the whole grill in. It took 8 gallons of vinegar just for comparisons sake.

I keep asking myself why so many people confuse a cast iron pot/stock pot with a Dutch oven?? A classic Dutch oven almost always has feet, a concave lid with a raised outer edge...! Why? To use it outdoors as an OVEN and not just as a cooking pot with a funny lid, certain recipes required "top heat" only centuries ago, and that's where the special lid comes in, which, due to its shape alone, prevents firewood/coal from falling or slipping. Second function of the lid... it serves as a fireproof base when you cook food in an environment that could catch fire (risk of forest fires)

Equal parts? Sand, Portland cement and lime. Mix dry… then add water ‘as needed’ a little at a time. Cookie dough consistency. Not too wet to avoid shrinking and cracking. I just bought a place with un chinked log walls I need to finish. The sellers put styrofoam spray in between… I’ll need to scrape it down… looks like others have put nails along the lower log run… vs using the grate to help hold in the chinking mud. If anyone knows anything, I’d love your two cents!
