I ride a recumbent trike and I’m also working on getting my license to drive, my eventual plan is to have a van with my recumbent in the back so that I can find free parking 1 or 2 kms away if necessary and then ride to where ever I need to go, there’s no reason why you can’t have a bike strapped to your car or in your car and you might even be grateful to have a bike to ride to the nearest town or servo if you find yourself broken down and need help, bikes are great things and people need to stop with the hate

beside the self education we really need to do a *collective action* instead of just feeling bad about awful state of bike lanes in out cities. make a video about that, we have been individually suffering for too long it's time to do it together and make change

My rails to trails group has been negligent on plowing the trail. I told them if they buy a cheap quad with a blade I would plow it for the season. I got no response.

Droppers are really cool in the city actually if you are used to them. Its really nice to get to a break light and just drop it while you're waiting or resting for a bit, or if you have to cross through a park and have to manoeuvre a bit more then usual

Excellent! Been considering what I need to get out there during our Ottawa winters. The buff is a great idea and when I used to ride motorcycles, I always got strange looks when the temperature began to drop and I would put on a scarf. Worked wonders and the buff would have been even better. One advantage of winter riding is you can park your bike and most likely the thieves will be absent. When it’s warmer you can’t leave it locked and unattended for any time at all or it’s gone.

I cut the valve off old tubes and use those instead of bungee cords. A good source of free bungee cords is any trail that people ride quads on, there will be ditch bungees every km or so

It also helps if the program is low cost, which encourages people to participate in it. If it only costs a dollar or two, it's going to be a lot more likely to work than if the city charges you $10 or $15 dollars or even more.

Usually the bridge isn't the barrier, but the water underneath... Designing infra for just one mode of traffic is a problem, imagine bridges were only made for trucks, than all private drivers would complain. For a very long time people traveled by many means; on foot, horse, donkey, oxwagon, mules, etc. Imagine someone would say; 'this bridge is only for horses!'. And it's okay to create a dedicated bridge, if the others can cross over the existing one. But only the US and UK seem to have skipped normal thinking.

Panniers are best in terms of stability. Keeping the weight LOWER to the axle-line is better for stability. If possible, the heaviest items should be located on the forward edge of the pannier (closest to the center of the bike).

I just moved to town on bishop street and have been enjoying the short ride to the climbing gym. I do find riding on queen street a little scary since there isn't a dedicated bike lane. I'm going to pickup my new single speed bike today, I just donated a crappy huffy that I found on craigslist. I can't wait to explore more on bike.

Riders should be required to have liability insurance and registration for their bikes if they’re going to use them on city streets. Ever been hit by a bike? A cyclist will just flip you off and flee the scene.

Even crossing a small bridge or overpass on a bike can be terrifying. Painted bike lanes usually disappear on a bridge, even when they are present on both sides, and taking up a primary position in the middle of the lane on a 30-40 mph road can be just as scary as squeezing off to one side of the lane and letting vehicles pass too close!
@Shifter_Cycling2 күн бұрын
Yes, I see all the time that bike lanes disappear on bridges or intersections or anyplace, really, that is slightly difficult for traffic engineers to manage.

Paris bridges are easy to cross. However, in the suburbs it is not the same. A few are pretty nice but most are not fun. They usually paint a bike symbol on the narrow sidewalk and call it a bike lane.
@Shifter_Cycling2 күн бұрын
I have this is my city as well. There’s a law preventing us from riding on sidewalks, but then they go and paint bike symbols on some of them 🤷🏻♂️

Your videos make me REALLY want to move to Calgary. Forget Ontario. I just got some Ice Spiker Pro tires, they make a world of difference in a city that doesn't plow bike lanes and barely plows sidewalks too. They get through SNIRT nicely. Good thing because our sidewalks are just that, never gets to the pavement like your videos. Another tip, keep your water in a bag like backpack or pannier if you can to keep from freezing, or if you can't just put it in your bottle holder upside down. Some how it keeps the top from freezing. I also fill the bottle with warm water, the cold cools it off and stops from freezing longer :)

High quality tires. I'm 3 years riding on the tires I have, no flats and the tires is still in good shape. Less gears is a big one. I may go back to 15 speed bikes. Constantly gearing up and down is irritating. I have hills so single speed is not good where I am. Excellant video.

10:31 that “Copenhagen left” is _half_ made for cyclists. Yes, it gets the left-turning cyclists out of the way of the straight-through cyclists, and gives the turners somewhere to be while waiting for an opening to make their turn. _But it’s on the wrong side!_ they now must cross just as many lanes of traffic as if it didn’t exist, _plus one more._ There’s a reason we typically put dedicated left-turn lanes to the left of all other same-direction traffic. If there’s enough bike traffic there that people waiting to turn left would bottle things up, then there’s enough bike traffic there that the person trying to get up to speed from a complete stop while crossing the through lane of cyclists will bottle things up or cause a crash. A typical bicyclist is ~2’ wide but ~6’ long, so they’ll easily block the entire through-lane as they cross it.

I was faced with this predicament when I moved from a fairly walkable town in California to the entirely car dependent Tri-Cities area of East Tennessee. The DAY I moved there, my license expired, and I was also hit with a degenerative eye disease which disabled me from driving for an entire year. I have so much hate for suburbs now.
