I always wondered what was the best paper for combining colored pencils and alcohol markers! I'll have to give Bristol a try. Thank you so much for the recommendation! I have a question about adding acrylic markers into the mix. I noticed that you used a white Posca acrylic marker for some white highlights on the strawberries. Do you recommend using the acrylic before or after the colored pencil portion of the drawing? Can colored pencil go on top of acrylic markers or vice versa? Thank you very much!

I'm using 400 exclusively as a test period right now with the goal of being able to tell folks the exact differences and whether 300 or 400 works best in specific situations. Overall, for general marker + pencil projects, I honestly think I like 300 better and I'll go back to it when I'm done with the forced 400 period.

What I noticed while watching the video is that the flower you are drawing looks super realistic in the first part of the video where you use markers. Another thing I noticed is that the picture only looks realistic to the point where you use markers and pencils together for the darkest parts at the base of the flower itself where its (Stigma, Stamen,) are located. As for the petals, the further they go and the more they fade, the better they are looking only with marker. Because what I know about drawing is that if you want something to look realistic you have to give it the illusion of depth because drawing, as you know, is a technique for depicting 3D things on a 2D medium. So in this case, markers and color pencils only work well to a certain extent. As you can see in the video, markers and pencils (reflect or absorb light in different ways) thanks to this property of theirs, we can combine them to achieve a better illusion of depth and control it to our wish. [Sorry, I don't know if they absorb light or reflect, I have no idea exactly how they work, you know better and I would be happy if you could explain it to me]. But what I think I learned at least is that it is better to use the color pencils only for the darkest parts to refract the light in a different way than the markers and thus create the impression that there is depth. The conclusion of the whole thing is that everything you said in the video is true! For which I thank you very much!

Listening to your thought process as you color is so helpful, as is watching you struggle a little. Whenever I tried to do anything creative or artistic as a kid, I always had the voice in my head telling me I couldn't do something bc when I tried, it never looked right. It wasn't until I met some artistic people and realized how much struggling happens in the background that I understood that just bc you're artistic doesn't mean everything you do is perfect the first time (for example, I never realized how many photos a photographer takes to get the "one" until I started working closely with a photographer). All that to say, thank you for leaving the struggles in 😁

LOL. I'll be sure to screw up more, just for you. Teasing, of course. I totally understand, the first ten years or so, I kept expecting to reach a point where I didn't have to struggle. I don't know what I was expecting, maybe a beam of light with a voice saying "Now all will come easy..." The truth is, I still struggle just as much. The only thing that's changed is what I struggle over. I'm always finding new things to botch :)

If that’s the set you’re referring to, it’s not the worst but it’s also not easy. I don’t see skin tones there. The gaps between the grays are too big to blend easily and they’re too strong to underpaint the other colors in the box. The colors there are also challenging to blend, it’s literally their hardest red with a bunch of pinks and the greens are a big jump. This is what I mean when I say the boxes are designed to make you buy more markers to supplement what’s in the box.
@carlostaveras3309
@carlostaveras3309 6 күн бұрын
@@AmyShulke Yes those are the ones. Hey, that price isn’t bad. It comes out to $3.80 a marker. Way cheaper than the prices in the U.S. per marker. Wow, so those markers are difficult to blend, uh. They look like they would have a smooth transition. I always thought they would blend like paint. Then again I don’t have the experience you have. Planning to get to the store today and wanted to start with a set. That’s why I thought of the color wheel, and getting a light, mid and dark of each color. You should create set you would recommend. I did take notes from all of your videos on your website.

@@carlostaveras3309 All Copics will blend or at least near-blend with all other Copics if you're patient, have good technique, and are on good paper-- which isn't the case for most beginners/intermediates. And some blends are naturally a lot easier than others. Look for 2 spaces between consecutive numbers for the easiest blends (like B16-B14 or C4-C2). Anytime the gap is larger than 2 or if the first number changes, you're increasing the difficulty. Copic is being rude here by giving you G14-G19 when they could have given you G17-G19. And they're giving E11-E15 when it could've been E13-E15. They're giving you just enough to almost-maybe-kinda succeed.

@ thanks for the help. I watched your video and I was thinking about my wides. Some are dried out and the chisel nib is decaying off. I’m wondering if the entire marker is dead as you said about the sketch once they get to that point. But I think these Copics can be brought back to life buying the parts that are needed. Wonder if the wide have a core in the barrel or it’s only the sketch with that and wides have an open ink reservoir.
@carlostaveras3309

Oh and the Copic page says 22g. I’m assuming that may be empty because they are sold empty now. So a wide filled with ink should weigh 28g.

@@carlostaveras3309 The wides definitely have a core. I think OLO are the only alcohol markers without a core and even then, they still have a fibrous buffer between the ink reservoir and the nib.

@@carlostaveras3309 Sounds reasonable but I'll bet ink is slightly heavier than water, so the rule of "1ml water = 1 gram" might not apply. I'll bet you come closer to 30g.
