Thanks. Just got my machine set up and am about to do a simple inlay. One question, though. When you set up the toolpath for the inlay portion, you changed the settings for the endmill; what about the v groove settings? I'm going to subscribe. Easy to follow and just the right pace. I haven't looked into why what settings are changed but all in good time. Thanks

Nice video. Although i dont cut much on round stock, this will be helpful down the road. I do have a suggestion if you don't know already... but when you input a number for anything, if you want to divide that length in half, just input it and use the "/" symbol and hit "=" at the end of the equation. Example: 23.75 / 2 = 11.875 Hope this helps you or someone else. Keep up yhe great work.

Well see, I thought you were cool until you made a Niners project! ;-) (Seahawks fan here). Seriously though, great video. I'm curious though, how did you come up with the toolpath? I understand you used Advanced v-carve, but how did CC know what to cut out and what to leave uncut? Or, where to pocket and where not to? Did you have to group the vectors in such a way to tell CC what was a pocket and what wasn't? Also, I'd love to see a video on how you edited your vectors after importing the image - I'm still trying to figure that process out. Keep up the great content!

Haha dang! I’m actually an AZ native so I root for the Cardinals but since I’m in the Bay Area now I’ll root for the home team. Regarding your question. I simply selected all the vectors except the most outer one. With everything else selected the program knows to “pocket” the design. Had I kept the outmost vector selected and done the advanced carve toolpath, it would have given me raised text. Thanks for the feedback for video ideas.

@@aetimberpine man I'd love to see a quick vid on what you mean by how you choose your Toolpaths with this design. Because are you saying you actually used a 'pocket' toolpath or are you saying the Adv v-carve pocketed after you selected all the vectors except the outer one?

Instead of paper I use shrink wrap. It's much more sensitive and thinner. I started doing it this way 'cause after my bit had a few mishaps by going through my aluminum block and breaking the bit I started using shrink wrap. Just the other day I saw someone do something even better when zeroing the z. As he set the router down slowly on the table he spun the bit. As soon as it touched the table he stopped. As soon as I make it out to the shop I'm gonna try it that way to see how accurate and efficient that way is. I've never thought of that before.
@aetimberpine2 ай бұрын
whoa! shrink wrap really? I never would have thought. whats the indicator that you're at the top? I'm curious to know. Thanks for the info.

@aetimberpine2 ай бұрын
@@iwannaapple7190 how do you know that you're at the top of your material? The wrap stops moving, or it stretches? Thats what I was referring to.
@iwannaapple71902 ай бұрын
@@aetimberpine Ohh, What I use is shrink bags. I just cut the sides and then cut the middle to have two square pieces. I use it just like the paper method except the shrink wrap is so sensitive and slides back and forth so easily that it will react to the slightest graze of the bit. Whereas you feel nothing with paper until the bit traps the paper. Shrink wrap is much thinner and more reactive to the bit touching as your sliding back and forth. You can even feel the bit grazing it. I've done plenty of bit changes in the middle of a project and you can't tell at all in the finished carve. My hair is thicker than the shrink wrap paper I use so not only can you feel the bit grazing soon after the shrink wrap will start to bend. So, I either zero the z when its grazing or when it bends. It slides much better than paper to.

Good info on the convert to curves and weld tool info. Correct me if I’m wrong but if you select all and say to cut outside doesn’t it automatically cut the bubble portion on the inside so it keeps the text proportioned correctly?
@aetimberpine2 ай бұрын
Hey Ken, I checked on this and yes, you're right it does automatically cut the bubble as an outside contour. Definitely something to consider. Regarding this project, I still would have done a pocket since the letter is very thing and I think the contour toolpath would eat into the remaining "meat" of the letter and make it too thin. Thanks for the tip. Ill have to keep that in mind.
@kencasey94542 ай бұрын

im a little late to the party, but im curious how the advanced v-carve works when using a machine that cant swap bits automatically. is there a pause built in somehow, or perhaps it just isnt a usable option in this case. Thanks!
@aetimberpine2 ай бұрын
Hi Meat...I don't do a lot of crazy g-code changes, I use whatever carbide create makes.. with that said, here is what i know. 1. The advanced v-carve requires the bitsetter for it to work. The bitsetter measures both the endmill tool and the vbit tool to ensure that they reference the same z zero and therefore does not require you to manually set your z zero after the first tool (endmill). 2. With that said, there are those that know how to modify gcodes and are able to use the advanced vcarve toolpath without using a bitsetter. but this is the only other way. I know not much help but i hope that clarifies some things.
@MeatMurphy2 ай бұрын
@aetimberpine i appreciate your input a lot! And it seems it was a nice sanity check. I had come to the same conclusion about needing a bitsetter... But a standard gcode file *can* be edited in any text editor... It seems it's just a matter of deciphering which steps tell it to change bits, cut/paste to a new doc from there, and adding pre- and postamble to both... I don't want my first adventure in CNC to be tool destruction, so i will steer clear of adj v-carve for now! Thanks again. I'll keep watching your work too!

Thanks for the video. A couple of Tips for you. 1. Don’t bother with cutting the outside profile. You will always get a cleaner cut using your table saw than with a router. Especially in plywood. 2. Set your z-height after each bit change, it’s not a one and done, you will never insert each bit the same depth in the collet.
