As goofy as the original broadcast versions were. The pure nostalgia makes them definitive for me. Flaws and all the voice actors talent really sold the show. The funimation cast change was such a blow to the appeal for me. The OG cast made it feel like a western.

Just a guide on the things that aren’t presented quite as accurately here, or just general thoughts. - Spot on with “Kakarot”. That’s why the English manga and sub uses “Kakarrot”, since it makes the pun more obvious. Although, you neglected to mention what “Son Goku” means, which is the Japanese translation of the Chinese name“Sun Wukong”. - “Gohan” can also be used to refer to a meal, like breakfast. That’s why you can hear Chichi in the dubs of DBZ Movies 1-2 saying “Gohan! Dinner time!” In the original dialogue, she says “Gohan-chan! Gohanyo!” - “Yamcha” or “Yamucha” more accurately represents dim sum, which are meals traditionally comprised of many small plates of things. - You got one half of “Krillin”. “Kuririn” represents a portmanteau of the Japanese words for “chestnut” and “Shaolin”, the latter of which is represented as “Shōrin” in that language. I usually tend to just keep his name unaltered to preserve the full pun, and everything except the dub apparently agrees. - Uhhh…no. Karin’s name comes from his tower. Karin Tower, meanwhile, is named for a deep fried Japanese snack called “karintō”, which is a homonym for the Japanese term for the tower: “Karin-tō”. The dub changing it to “Korin” was for a reason I am not privy to. - Only Dr. Brief’s name is “Brief”. There’s a misconception in the West that “Dr. Brief” is referring to Bulma’s dad’s family name. In Japanese, doctors-particularly ones referred to by the more formal “Hakase” instead of “Dokutā”-are referred to by their given names. Like in DB Super: Super Hero, when Dr. Hedo refers to Bulma as “Dr. Bulma”. Therefore, “Brief” is Dr. Brief’s given name, meaning there is no family name in the underwear family. Also, Toriyama didn’t give a name to Bulma’s mom, but said he’d have gone with something like “Panchy” (a play on panties) if he did. - “Shugesh” doesn’t represent pumpkin. “Pumbukin” does, since that’s his name in the original credits. The dub and video game translations changed it to something utterly incomprehensible. - “Borgos” doesn’t represent potato. “Toteppo” does, since that’s his name in the original credits. The dub and video game translations changed it to something utterly incomprehensible. - “Tora” doesn’t represent tomato. “Toma” does, since that’s his name in the original credits. I don’t even understand why this change even exists, since he’s the only of Burdock’s teammates whose name is spoken in the Japanese version. - Not only is Selipa’s name pun on parsley, but “Fasha” doesn’t even refer to corn. - I get the rest of the Ginyu members, since their names in the dub are only slightly misspelled from the correct adaptations for the most part, but “Jeice” doesn’t really do much to represent Jheese’s name pun on cheese. That’s a completely different middle sound from “Jīsu”. - Thousar’s name pun is on thousand island dressing. “Salza” is absolute gibberish that I don’t even know how the dub came up with. It’s only marginally similar to “Sauzā”. - I don’t know or think that “Lapis” and “Lazuli” are in the original manga, Z, GT, or Super in any capacity. Also, 10/10 use of that clip from DBZ Movie 7 in your ending.

As for me, I’m a purist. Nothing is better than the original Japanese version of Z to me. However, the uncut FUNimation dub of Kai comes close, as it’s incredibly faithful to the original version in more ways than just using the Japanese attack names. Suddenly, I get to watch a version of Dragon Ball with incredibly well written and translated dialogue instead of cheesy one liners and showing a clear misunderstanding of the series, and with a Goku that feels like Goku instead of budget Superman. Although, I do own the Rock the Dragon Blu-ray set FUNimation released in 2013, and I do crack that open every once in a while.

Thank you for shedding light on ye olden dubs of anime. I grew up watching anime in the early 2000s. So I experienced a transitional stage of localized dubs on television. 4Kids One Piece being a prime example I can remember. Meanwhile simultaneously Viz Media was airing Naruto's Chunin exam at the same time pretty much uncensored was wild.

So basically, Japan and South Korea are the only places in the world where Yugioh is marketed accordingly to a teen audience. Everywhere else in the world is "children card game" What a sad situation for an IP honestly, 4kids yugioh is the reason i despise censorship to foreign media coming to the west C'mon in all seriousness you can't see the tcg and say "ok this product is intended for children because the show, and the memes on the internet says so. Also the box says 6 years or more" Even if it was, it stopped being a children card game looooooong time ago, at this point the game is marketed purely to adults and a few geeky teenagers And the box only says 6 years or more just to sell a little bit more and get a little bit more money from unaware parents

I personally think the shadow realm was a creative way to overcome death in the series. It seems like it was the type to be more dramatic than death surprisingly when I watch the anime, there were still subjects on deaf and such and people getting sacrificed

.. this is surprising and now I kind of want to see season zero …. I grew up with the Yu-Gi-Oh! thing since it came around to Netflix during the time before the story was different and lately I wanted to revisit the series to get some childhood nausea.. however, I started realizing this series was more dark and as a child, I was completely fine with it cause I thought it was all games. I wasn’t even knowing and now that I know the origins of the series… I’m questioning so many things..

I grew up on the DiC version and just got back into Sailor Moon. I tried the Viz version, and I applaud them for trying to keep it as authentic to the original Japanese version, but I prefer the DiC version (maybe because I can just relate more to it by being American). First off, I think the one major reason I prefer the DiC version is because of the music. Music is very important when setting the right moods, especially during emotional scenes. Now I'm guess Viz is the original music but sometimes not every original choice is the best choice. I like the DiC remixed open intro, the transformation and Moon Tiara Magic (I like "Magic" over "Action") music scenes, the ominous Dark Kingdom music, the music that plays when the Moon Princess is revealed, and the music that plays during the final battle scene on Season 1. Watching some DiC episodes side by side with Viz, there were some dialogue scenes in the DiC version which seemed more natural than the Viz version. I prefer the majority of the DiC voice actors. It would have been nice if Viz could have brought a majority of them back. Going back to the final battle of season one, Princess Serenity talks in a more proper dialect in the DiC version compared to Viz which you should expect her to do as she is finally embracing her role as a Princess. I also prefer Luna's old voice actress. She had this proper British accent which made it feel like you needed to take her seriously where as the Viz version is more school girl like. I do prefer the original Season 1 finale. It sucks that it was highly censored. As stated above, I really wish the original DiC final battle music stayed in as it was a unique song for the situation instead of the generic opening theme. I like a lot of the DiC character names (once again, American). When I hear people talk about the Japanese names, I get lost sometimes because some names sound familiar or I'm unsure if they are mentioning a name. Since this was marketed to children in the 90s, it makes sense that certain things needed to be censored. I prefer female Zoisite over male Zoisite. I just feel it makes more sense that Zoisite is a female with how their character is drawn. Also is nice having female representation in the Dark Kingdom general core. As for Neptune and Uranus, they should have kept their relationship authentic. To me it sucks that the DiC version is gone. It's unfair to the voice actors and musicians that worked on it.

The dark energy disks that are totally not chainsaws and the magical devices that transfer you to the shadow realm by breaking the glass.... And somehow, when Yugi dueled Joey in the domino docks, they couldn't shoehorn some bull like the bomb opening a magical portal in the ocean to drag you into the shadow realm before you lose all your oxygen, or the box above Tea being filled with shadow realm teleport energy or something 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love this dub

There's a quote, from the game _Darkest Dungeon_ of all places, that always comes to mind when I hear about those like Takahashi, people who died trying to do the right thing and help others even if it cost them dearly. When battling the final boss, if you choose a Houndmaster as the target of the boss' one-hit-kill, he'll reassure his dog with the words, _"Steady, girl. When we're called, we answer."_ I'm not a brave person, I love being alive, and I'll cling to life with everything I have until the very end. But I hope that if I'm called, like Takahashi, I can answer.

The viz dub IS disappointing. The girls' voices just sound too much alike! I prefer the OG Japanese version, but the cheesy dic dub will always have a special place in my heart. The voice actors really went all in and made the characters sound unique--even if the censorship is hilariously bad in retrospect.

People tend to ignore the mangas a lot for Yugioh. Considering how dark they are. The DM Manga is basically a what-if there was almost no restrictions, so was Yugioh R's and DsoD's spinoffs, GX, 5DS, Zexal, etc. It's the what-if Yugioh was dark that people seem to want, yet never look into. And when many do, they normally do like them.

Dude, I am SUPER PRO a surprising amount of these edits. I'm watching the 2 dubs together, and my god, all the fat shaming, the sexualization of children, underage drinking, the RAMPANT sexual assault or threat of it, or even worse the *romanticization* of it... Yeah, NONE of that is good for kids!! Especially the girls this show is supposed to speak to/for. I wish they had done even more. I'm kind of glad for the lesbian "erasure" at this point, because the uncensored version does NOT make me feel "represented" in any way, only fetishized. Spreading the (rather common) knowledge that the lesbianism was removed from Sailor Moon did far more to help lesbians than actually seeing that uncensored would have, I guarantee it.
