My reasoning was, "Piccolo's arm grew back and because Tien had three eyes, Tien≠normal human since there's already a green guy, a talking pig, a talking cat, a talking turtle, aliens, etc." I also think that Piccolo's blood being green was one of the better ideas that the edited version had. I got used to the red blood at this point though.

The german dub (our source material was the already censored French dub) had no problem with death, hell or profanity but because it was already censored by our neighbors, there was a lot of blood and hard hits missing and sometimes the cuts were so drastic that scences didn't make any sense when someone was lying on the ground for no reason 😂 But the best thing is our GT, it has 13 episodes which were never even dubbed and because of that we never had the Gogeta vs Omega fight :D Our Naruto dub is also one of a kind, we had no violence censored but the dialogue was, even if you explicitly see someone die they were just knocked out and Itachi kidnapped his whole clan. I grew up with the Mexican dub, with absolutely no censorship; blood, gore, insults, full frontal nudity, sexually charged conversations, Master Roshi and even the intact original soundtrack with spanish lyric adaptations of the intro/outro songs. The Mexican dub actors went to Japan and spent time in Toei Studios, read the manga, trying to adapt the dialog and each character's personality as faithful as possible. Yeah, very few times the dialog feels weird, as it doesn't translate well to Spanish directly from Japanese, but you know you're getting the most authentic experience. After many years, I decided to watch the Ocean dub and could not handle more than 10 episodes. Lacks soul, effort and RESPECT to the source material. Funimation improves a little, but it is still a cringefest of voice acting and dialog at times. I'm only used to it because of the video games. I know that people see Bruce Falconer as a legendary music composer, and I think he is good, but his music does not go well with the anime. I really am sorry for you guys that had no alternative.

My experience with DBZ is kinda weird. I'm Polish, so my first experience was with the Polish lektor. Explaining what lektor is to people who likely never heard of it (like I imagine many people here) is pretty tough. It's basically the original audio track, voice lines included, playing as normal with a single Polish guy talking over it, directly translating all the dialogue. It kinda mimics watching foreign film and having someone translate it in real time right next to you. It was a pretty popular form of "dubbing" in Poland thanks to its low production cost. Anyway, the foreign version that the Polish lektor was put over was actually the French dub for some reason. It was very heavily censored, 4kids style, and it included many name changes for no particular reason. Goku was called Songo, Gohan was Gokan and most hilariously Piccolo was called Szatan Serduszko (which translates to Satan Little Heart). I didn't watch too many episodes in this way because I didn't have access to the station it was airing on. I only saw bits and pieces here and there and only managed to have my full DBZ experience once I got access to the internet and it was through the Funimation dub. This would mean that it should be the version I'd be the most nostalgic for, but honestly, once I've seen the original Japanese version with subs, I can not go back to the dub. Especially with the Faulcner score. I understand many poeple like it and it has some iconic pieces, but as a whole it cannot compare to the original in my humble opinion. It did get a while to get used to Goku's Japanese voice though.

Being very fluent in french (I have taken french class because some of my family members live in France) and having seen the french dub of Dragon Ball, I can say that the french dub really isn't nearly as censored as you make it out to be. It's censored but definitely not nearly as much as the Ocean dub which is also not 4kids level. It's mainly sexual and violent content being censored by cutting them completely and it's pretty bad (especially for the fact that there are scenes that were never dubbed because of that) but not that bad, there is still a lot of violence and the episodes still generally have 20 minute worth of content while not being edited down to a lower episode count. However, the translation was pretty bad, from a dialogue standpoint, it was generally more accurate than the English dub but it still had TONS of errors in almost every episodes and when it comes to the names and terms, I will definitely admit the English dub did better as they were all over the place and often changed between episodes in the french dub. But while Satan Little Heart did come from this dub, it isn't the case of Songo and Gokan. Goku and his sons were all called the same as the Japanese version but with their "Son" name in with no distinction (basically the opposite of the English dub where they almost never said the "Son" part) and spelled and pronounced with an "A" rather than an "O" (french way of course, with the nasal "AN" sound), while today, they use the more accurate spelling and pronunciation and stopped constantly saying the "Son" part in the names. I will also say that most of the french voice actors were very good and they make this dub enjoyable to watch for me. I prefer it over the old English dubs (from which the acting was mediocre for the most part, especially the FUNi dubbed Frieza saga) despite its huge amount of flaws. That is except for GT where all the voice actors beside Brigitte Lecordier (Android 18, Kid Goku, Kid Gohan, Kid Goten and (used to be) Videl) and Celine Monsarrat (Bulma and (used to be) Chichi) got replaced and even the new characters got pretty terrible casting choices. For modern Dragon Ball (Kai onwards), both dubs are great but I have a slight preference for the English dub. By the way, I find it pretty funny that I give you this response the day DBS Super Hero just released in french theaters (and btw, I haven't seen it and I'm not interested that much, I'm waiting for the Blu Ray release). Ah, and just to share my experience, I watched some episodes of DBZ in English when they first aired and I really didn't like it back in the day, I only started to like it when I gave the japanese version with subs a chance on the (shitty) Orange Bricks releases when I borrowed them from a friend. And I'm not just being a sub elitist as I really like modern Dragon Ball dubs and I also like lots of anime dubs (and I mean both french and english for the following anime series) like Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Death Note or One Punch Man. But old Dragon Ball dubs just aren't good.
@nanaya7e4332 жыл бұрын
@@frozenwine9317 It's entirely possible that the versiin we got was censored even further compared to the "pure" French dub. Can't say for certain since I've never seen that one and there's always a possibility that I don't remember it that well due to my limited exposure to it. I do remember Videl's fight with Spopovich being still brutal in the Polish version so maybe saying it's 4kids level is a bit of an exaggeration. I do remember a lot of awkward cuts though.

I watched DB some DBZ and some GT when I lived in Mexico in the Latin American Dub (no censoring what so ever on either series other than some cuts due to Roshi's egregious pervynes) and when I moved to the US, I refused to watch the English dub for either series. I tried to watching it again in the English at least twice in my adult years but I always end up returning to the Spanish dub. I couldn't agree more with your statement, nostalgia is indeed a powerful drug and it indeed has influence my preferred version. Thank you for your video, I really quite enjoyed it.

If you lived in the US, you wouldn’t know the difference of the dubs or uncut. What Toonami aired is what we got. As a 10 year old, you are not looking for the original uncut even if your parents allowed you to watch it, it was not sold in mainstream stores like Walmart or target, so as a 10 year old your only real option in the US was Toonami. There was also no Wikipedia to look the differences, the best we had were forums, which weren’t reliable considering it’s not peer reviewed, so again we just got what Toonami aired unless you were in your 20s and tracked down the subs. As a 10 year old, no car, no money, Toonami airing it for free was all most of us knew until the 2000s.

Small correction. Dragon Ball Z was ALWAYS popular when it was brought over to the US. It's been a massive misnomer by fans that, when DBZ was syndicated in 1996, it received poor ratings and was promptly cancelled and eventually re-ran on the Cartoon Network Toonami block to more success. Closer to the truth is that DBZ was popular even when it was being syndicated, hence why CN picked it up in the first place. Why would they pick up a dead show with little popularity? All that happened when CN nabbed it is that it became even more popular. The real reason it was cancelled is due to FUNimation literally being a brand new company and simply not having the funds to keep producing and outsourcing. Which is why they eventually went in-house after they developed the funds to do so, thanks to the breakthrough, even bigger success of DBZ on CN's Toonami.

@@kaelmic7476 Hell, even then, contrary to popular belief, that wasn't a complete bust either. The BLT dub wasn't cancelled due to poor ratings, at least it wasn't the primary reason (It actually had pretty decent ratings). No, the main reason was the timeslots. The BLT dub was also syndicated, but Seagull Entertainment, the syndicator, simply couldn't obtain a good enough, optimal timeslot. It aired, often, very early in the morning on most channels. While the timeslot it had wasn't terrible, it wasn't great either. And that was it's downfall.

One of the funniest instances I had with DBZ as a kid was my parents taking an interest in it because I loked it so mich and asking me if it had any violent content and me being a literal child just told them straight up oh yeah people get killed and there's blood everywhere and them promptly freaking out about it. Then when I was like no it's actually fine and showed them an episode it was a rerun of the Ocean dub fight between Raditz Goku and Piccolo so I got to keep watching. So shout outs to the ocean dub for that lol, it's still the definitive dub to me but that's because as a kid I thought the original voices just came back halfway through the show cause I was in Canada.

Further researching the changes and edits done in foreign, non-english dubs of DB should be a fun and interesting topic. Well done! Here in LATAM the censorship has been minimal after DB EP60 (the early episodes did have some cuts and mild pervy dialogue changes); almost everything except the first part of Kai (nicktoons version) was left entirely uncut and dubbed straight from the original japanese version, so it's fascinating seeing how other markets tinkered with the series in comparison.

My personal choice is the Latin American dub for *classic* dragon ball z, not Kai, it's practically perfect for what I want. It has all the voice actors I like, the music, it's complete (iirc, Kai in Latin America was actually not finished until recently, going only up to the cell saga), the filler is actually interesting in some cases, and it's also what I grew up with. They keep the names of the characters basically the same, can't think of one that was changed, the attacks are also kept the same (Kienzan, Genkidama, Makankosappo)

I grew up on the Ocean dub as well. It was so SO jarring when it suddenly switched to Funi halfway through through the Ginyu Saga. I hated it so much but I got used to it... and by the time I did we got the old Ocean VAs again with the Androids and Cell lol. I vaguely remember it switching back to Funi somewhere during the stuff with Buu but I can't say for sure. I still have a soft spot for Ocean and still prefer some of the voices - most noticeably Vegeta. I love his Ocean voice for a younger Vegeta, up until after Freeza, and his Funi voice for an older Vegeta, Androids and beyond. Yes I totally freaked out when Brian Drummond briefly returned in DBS, that was awesome. A shame the same couldn't be said for Ian as Goku Black, thanks Sean >> That would've been a dream come true. Also, Ocean!Krillin and Ocean!Piccolo, love them. Ocean!Piccolo's voice is smooooooooth af, but early Funi!Piccolo sounded really really rough... nowadays I think they sound pretty similar. DBZ hasn't aired on TV here for like 15 years, but fortunately I have the entirety of the uncencored 90s Funi dub with Faulconer on disk and HDD, and Kai as well. I like Kai with its improved voice acting and better dialogue, but the music kinda ruins it for me. I'll watch either or depending on my mood. Same reason why I gave up on the original Japanese DBZ. Unpopular opinion perhaps but I just don't really like the music for the most part. I need to get my hands on the Ocean dub again as well, for old time's sake.

Not the first post, definitely, yet I had a similar reaction to the second and third ones when I was watching DBZ’s dub. Since Ep. 68 is the start of the dub, they went back and dubbed the start of the Namek saga and the Saiyan saga, and since the Funi dub is the most distributed in the US today, some voice actors sound drastically different from preceding episodes, especially Goku, who’s far too “basic action character” like. But, as stated, Vegeta and the others sound normal. When I got to Ep. 68, the only real change I heard was in Goku and Gohan’s voices. Krillin, Vegeta, Piccolo… don’t get me wrong, it was noticeably weaker delivery since the characters weren’t really “theirs” at the time for the VA’s, but they had their styles at the ready unlike Schemmel with Goku, who was heavily replicating the Ocean dub’s depiction of his voice. Since he sounds far more mature than the current Goku we know from Funi, it’s understandable to be shocked by Goku’s voice following this change. So, yes, it does go back to “normal”.

OG DB cut the "no balls scene" and Bulma flashing on roshi (he just gives her the ball , no conditions, in the LA version) I believe oolong asking for panties was left intact however. Some scenes were made shorter, Like Frieza stabbing Krillin, in the LA version, he just stabs and throws him to the lake. Incidentally that is more faithful to the manga.

Heya, I'm Canadian. I tried watching the ocean dub when I was a kid, not knowing what it was. I never stuck with it. I watched chunks of maybe 8 episodes total, and then just went back to watching Naruto or Bleach or Mystery Hunters or whatever the hell was airing in the late 90s early 2000s, and DBZ left my mind completely. A decade later I had Kai on my hard drive for some reason, and no internet because I had just moved, so I just watched the whole series and it was the first time I fell in love with Dragonball Z. Many I know also did not start watching until they were adults simply because the Canadian dub was so unenjoyable, even to our feeble child minds. I know Nostalgia is a powerful influencer, but I would never say it is the determining reason for most people, in regards to DBZ. Kai stands strong on it's own merits, I think. I goddamn love Christopher Sabat and Sean Schemmel. Nostalgia may play a role for some, and DBZ may be just... Generally unpalatable for most western viewers, but for those of us that it is made for, it's straight gold.

I watched the pilaf arch of dragonball and the first 2 seasons of dbz (which later aired on cn before funimation made new seasons and then went back and redubbed the first 2) same channel showed the earlier sailor moon episodes cn didn't show. They had all sorts of weird anime on this channel plus weird shows based off of video games (double dragon, megaman). It took me nearly 20 years to find an anime a 6 year old me called "turbo man", only to find out it was "tekkno man" and that's not even it's real name but a dub choice.

I prefer the japanese original version, because not only was the uncensored japanese Kai version still censored and went against the manga at some points, but also because I really like Kikuchi's original soundtrack. I grew up with Kikuchi's score as I'm not from the US and my localized version left all of the japanese bgm intact. But for rewatches I also like choosing the japanese Kai version, just because the pacing is more compact and I also like Yamamoto's score. Even if he heavily referenced other western bands, I wish they would've used it for at least the full first 98 episodes for consistency, it's a bit weird how it changes midway through the series. I know some of Faulconer's music from listening to it on youtube and it's pretty epic, I can definitely see why so many people like it.

There's also the Toonzai/Vortexx version of DBZ Kai. That version was censored A LOT more than Nicktoons and even the old Ocean dub (Blue Mr. Popo, Spirit Bomb to Spirit Blast, halos to glowing balls, etc.). But yeah, I've come to prefer the Kai dub the most too. I also first came across DBZ when it began airing on Toonami in '98 and the rest is history. Though I'm usually a sucker for nostalgia in general, the dubs of DBZ have been a rare instance where I've been able to accept the newer version (Kai) as the better version. When I first watched DBZ a few years ago with the orange bricks, I thought for sure that the dub switched at episode 68, even though it was still funimation. Sean Schemmel's performance as Goku went from really good to god awful since he didn't re-record anything like Chris Sabat or any other actors who re-recorded the Frieza Saga for the orange bricks and future releases. Speaking of which, I think Funimation forgot to re-record dialogue for that episode because EVERYONE sounded wrong. Me and my brother started googling if the dub switched and if it would go back, but no, it was just a drastic switch from experienced Funimation to early Funimation.
