If you're still not sure if you're doing Frenzel or Valsalva, do a full exhale. And I mean every iota of air out of your body, then try to equalize. It would be impossible to Valsalva if the only air in your body is what's in your mouth.

Hi Ted i have one question. When im holding my breath (especially passive exhale breatholds) my stomach is at the beginning relaxed, everythng is ok, but after some time when i start to feel lighter urge to breath my upper abs start to tense up with diaphragm going up to my chest, so when i try to relax it (pull it back down, like i want to do abdominal inhale) i get contractions, like it shots right back up when i try to pull it down. It is like my contraction is caused from me trying to relax my diaphragm, (also my equalization causes contractions) if you got what i meant. Any tips on how to avoid that?

I don’t recall anything like that happening to me, maybe only at the very beginning of my freediving journey. Generally, if something like this happens, it’s either due to low CO2 tolerance, overly strong contractions, or insufficient relaxation. Freediving isn’t such a mental sport; it’s more a matter of adaptation and training.

Thanks! Why not start sinking right when it becomes possible?
@tedharty814
@tedharty814 3 ай бұрын
The more weight you wear, the earlier you can go into sink faze. The problem is when you wear more weight sure it's easier to go down but its now harder to go up. Secondly, if you have a blackout and you are wearing too much weight, you will sink when you blackout, which is really bad. So there needs to a be a balance. Which is why I teach my students to be neutrally bouyant at 33ft and then go into sink faze at 66ft.
@quinnculver
@quinnculver 3 ай бұрын
@@tedharty814 Thanks. Isn't sinking possible right after the neutral buoyancy point? Why don't you tell your students to sink at 40ft, for example?
@tedharty814
@tedharty814 3 ай бұрын
@@quinnculver@quinnculver, you will technically sink once you are 1ft deeper than your neutral point, but you will be BARELY negative, so if you stopped kicking, you would barely be moving. By kicking to double your neutral point now, when you stop kicking, you will still maintain a speed of one meter per second.

Ted - I wasn't able to watch the livestream due to job obligations and thankful you posted the livestream. I'm currently working towards my PFI Instructor Cert (we have corresponded via email already). One issue I have is I have one ear that tends to block sooner at around 15 meters. My instructor (Talya Davidoff) has said I'm a perfect instructor candidate and sees me easily doing 40 meters and I just need to figure out how to get this one ear from being so stubborn. Should I reach out to you again via email? The other issue of course is that feeling at around 22 meters where it begins to feel a little uncomfortable on my chest area. My deepest dive has been 30 meters years ago and would like to get comfortable down to 40 meters as I have no desire to dive deeper (My main focus is photo and video content creation).

One of the best ways is to take an in-person freedvign course. They are typically 2-day programs, and you progress very quickly. If you are looking for online resources, check on my Instagram or Tik @ImmersionFD. I create daily freediving advice videos, over 450 days in a row. I also have a podcast Freedive Live. You can also visit www.FreediveUniversity.com which has my articles and links to online courses. So that's a lot of free resources where I can help you.

if you it's been that long it's very likely not barotis media. It's probably water trapped behind excess ear wax. Go to walgreens CVS and get ear wax removal and use that, that will lilkey fix you up.

This is my normal warmup before practicing in my local diving pool. It's only 14 feet deep but more than enough for practicing. It helps a lot as it can also help keep you calm. I do 5 minutes of normal breathing in the water, and then I put my face in the water, doing 30-second intervals for 5 minutes and relaxing for a few more minutes. I do one breath hold as long as possible safely, of course, then I'm all set to freedive. I just walk around the bottom of the pool watching the scuba diver instructors teach. It's really fun to watch. I tried to get them to play catch with a pool toy, but I was ignored😂.

if you are wearing. mask you should place yoru thumb and finger on either side of the nose pocket all the so you can feel your face through the mask. You just have to make your thumb and finger all pressing all teh way back so when you pinch them shut, your nose is pinched close.

You can pull up ari arond 20-25M, once and then use that air to equalize to the plate at 40M. From 25-40M You don't need to have your checks puffed out because you don't need that much air. You need to learn how to pull up some air and then hold that air, not repeatedly pulling up air every time you equalize. The less air you have in your mouth, the easier it is to manage. Does that make sense?

90% of my life I've been diving alone, not because I wouldn't like to have a dive buddy but because I don't know anybody that dives, and I'm usually in remote places in the world where there is nobody else diving, and I don't know anybody that can go with me I do take every precaution, I always stay well within my breath-hold limits, very conservatively, set my watch with a timer to make sure as soon as that alarm goes off I'm headed up, always go up immediately and don't worry about the fish until I get some breaths That's all I can do It's either a dive alone or don't dive

Hello, my name is Monique Duncan. I live in Boise, Idaho. A friend told me about you and your vast knowledge on Freediving. I'm just now getting into the sport. Here in Idaho, we swim in rivers. I learned to swim on the Snake River. It can be a beast to navigate. Currents and channels is what we learn how to get out of at a very young age. My breath hold in the river is 2:48. However, I know freedive breath hold will be a different beast especially with the pressure on my body. I'm currently swimming in a pool due to it being still winter here. I have purchased my wetsuit, goggles, nose clamp and fins (Im not sure if they are the right length) I have people that are willing to be my safety crew I don't know where to navigate them for training in case of blackout. I haven't swam with my gear yet as I want to make sure I'm doing the things correctly right off the bat. I'm going to subscribe to your news letter now. I'm interested in zooms. I appreciate your daily videos but need to know where to start. Is there a series that takes me through from the beginning? I also need to know breathwork exercises. Thank you Monique P.S I should of put this in a PM but maybe someone else may have some of the same questions.
