I saw this when it came out. I was barely in my teens. I went back to see it at least six times before its run ended. Even missing the inside jokes, I thought the small jokes more than carried the story. Glad to know I'm not the only one who saw the genius in this film.

This movie reminds me of the DVD or even VHS movie that would be in the $5 bin, so you’d be like what the heck $5 is cheaper than a movie ticket. Go home watch it, and realize you hit comedy gold!!! You would immediately put this movie in your comedy rotation.

I’ve found some of my favorite films this way. Two that come to mind immediately are Year In Revolt and War Inc. Although I hated War Inc the first time I watched it because I didn’t understand what I was watching. I thought it was a serious movie, and I kept thinking it was so poorly done. I told my wife how stupid it was and that it was so bad that she had to see it. About 15 minutes into the second watch it hit me like a ton of bricks: it’s a satire! All of a sudden I was catching all of the subtle jokes, and it was hilarious…we ended up rewinding back to the beginning to start over with the proper mindset. To this day it’s one of my favorite films.

The oldest cliche in Hollywood is making fun of Hollywood. Hollywood loves laughing at how silly it is, which is why they plant Ricky in front of the Oscar audience and no one gets offended. He's fucking Hollywood as fuck.

L. A. Story is Steve Martin's love letter to Los Angeles and Bowfinger is his love letter to Hollywood. It also came out the same weekend as Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. I remember wanting to see it in theaters, but then going to see The Matrix, Sixth Sense, and Star Wars instead ...

A member of the Marines is a marine. A member of the Air Force is an airman. If you're in the Navy, you're a sailor and if you've joined the Coast Guard, a guardsman. Finally, only members of the Army are called soldiers. All told.

Oh, man...I may go on for a bit here... This is one of my favorite movies ever....amazingly quote-able. First saw this when it came out, Christmas Season 1982. The audience laughter drowned out so much of the dialogue..... like a textbook for comedic structure, the laughs get bigger and bigger as it goes, so that Dorothy's climactic monologue on live TV is the high-point in terms of audience reaction. I think I must have missed half the monologue there was so much raucous laughter. Biggest one-liner was Murray's slut line. Random lines: "Zap him in the badoobies" "Are you out of your cotton-picking MIIIND?" "Nurse Charles, are you insane?" "You were a tomato!" Really, the whole movie you can quote. My moment of "Dustin Hoffman is a genius" came when I realized he was actually playing three characters: Himself, Dorothy Michaels, AND Emily Kimberly. You can really tell he worked on making Dorothy and Emily two distinct characters - which goes back to the idea of it being more than just a drag comedy. My god, what a supporting cast! You mentioned his is really Teri Garr's peak - she's so adorable and neurotic and funny, you can't help but love her. George Gaynes takes what could have been a throwaway part and makes it hilarious (and believable). I also love Charles Durning's slow realization who is sitting next to him at the ending bar scene. There's a small little play that eventually made it to Broadway called "Title Of Show", which was basically a re-telling of four friends and how they made it to Broadway, One of the sequences is them in class about acting for the camera, when the director of the class asks a student to turn their head to the left. One of our main characters says, "My left, or your left." In a second the characters realized they had a common bond: Their love of Tootsie. It was a neat little moment.
