As a biotechnologist who loves the ocean... it is so nice to have validation in all of my own pressure points with this movie. My partner and friends thought my fuming was funny but I thought I was going to have an aneurysm. HOWEVER, as a person who did read the book, I can explain the tank portion. In the book, the Meg (Angel in the book) never really attacked the tunnel during her time growing up. However, the bars were made of the toughest material they could find and when she did start showing aggression towards the gate, they did make preparations to enclose her completely in using concrete. She burst out while they were attempting to do so. Also, they determined she was there to mate in the book as they noticed changes in her behavior, male sharks were being attracted to the gate, etc etc. They did know when she got loose and did track her down. They kept overall portions of the book but they did have to "Hollywoodify" it.

Shark attacks are rare but somehow are becoming more common now I see on the news, it’s probably because it’s summer now and the waters are getting warmers. I mean as far as I know the most common reason for a shark attack 1: it mistakes a human for a seal or the splashing attacks the shark and thinks it’s pray. 2: it’s an injured shark and it’s trying to feed on anything easy

I like your videos. We still slaughter or put whales and dolphins in a small tank for centuries and they are still so friendly with us and in some cases save our lives. Though there are recent attacks on boats off of the coast of Spain and Portugal a favourite spot to catch baby orcas for show. Do you think that they are coming to their senses that not all of us are their friend? Cheers and have a good day.

I wasn't sure where else to put this, so I'm putting it here. I just watched a movie called Under Paris and at several points during it I thought to myself, "What would Dr. Sam say about this?" There was a part where someone brushes their hand across a shark and I thought about the burn you mentioned. I'd love to know what you thought of it, if you've seen it, and if not may I suggest it? Hope things are going well for you!

People want to protect big species but "giant" has a negative connotation? Okay . . .That and the fact that people think "killer" and "sheep-eating" and other predator names are negative when humans and meat-eating are like two peas in a pod. Also, it's a shame that "blind" has a negative connotation given that, you know, peoople can also be blind. Does that mean people think blind kids are less worthy of help? Or does it not apply 'cause they're more pitied?

And would we make the "Bald Vulture" our national mascot? All other eagles kill their own meals, while the bald eagle identifies as a vulture, eating mostly carrion, dead fish, and sometimes stealing kills from other predators. Never wondered why videos of other eagles catching prey are more common? It's because it's a rare day that the bald eagle ever hunts living game.
@drsammunroe21 күн бұрын
Great point. And because this species is a national symbol, it is more likely to be prioritised for conservation.

@drsammunroe21 күн бұрын
Yes, great example. In marine science, there has been a big push not to use the name killer whale anymore, and instead use orca. This is because of the negative connotations of "killer whale", and because technically, they are dolphins!

What an inserting aspect to consider. Tbh, I think I would think a species was more abundant or 'least concern' with the name 'common'. I would hope I'd look it up before saying as much, but it's interesting and a bit concerning the effect it could have on our subconscious perception of a species. As always another great and informative video, thanks for making it! P.S I'd definitely save the sheep eating eagle :)
@drsammunroe21 күн бұрын
Thanks so much again for your support and positivity. Your vids are always so impressive, so I always take it as such a huge complement when you watch and comment. "Common" in a name is so tricky. I do understand the impulse to call something common, especially if it is more wide spread or abundant than another similar, closely related species. From that perspective, it is a very logical name. But names that are comparative are problematic because those comparisons can change, and can make one species seem more important than another. It's a tough job. Thanks again!
@tidalwave542221 күн бұрын
at roughly 9:15 you bring up the meg sized tunnel. In the source material, a japanese man built this place for blue whale research and the "tunnel" wasnt covered on top from my understanding. The idea was that the whales would be able to swim through it freely so they could be observed without being kept in captivity. The researchers repurposed it (rather hastily) to contain the megalodon. i think the tunnel was just there for a fun cinematic effect? but thats just a guess

This is yet more proof that I need to read the books. It seems like the movies just don't do the books justice and that as crazy as the concept is, the author tried to explain things and justify his choices. The movie doesn't make that same level of effort, which was one of the reasons I didn't really like it overall. Thanks for commenting!

@@drsammunroe oh for sure. This was one of my favorite book series (until it wasnt lol). The first few books are a fun read but i personally think that from books 5+ it gets repetitive and is doin too much. But the first few at lesst would be a great read if you at least semi-enjoyed this movie and thought it would be better if things made more sense.

Dr. Sam! There's a new shark movie out called Under Paris! People are calling it a worthy successor of Jaws, and I agree. It explores how climate change is impacting sharks and their behavioral patterns. It's not as flashy as Meg or Deep Blue Sea, but I feel it delivers on realism, commentary, as well as suspense and scares. I believe you spoke about the sharks evolving behavioral patterns in one of your prior videos, so I think Under Paris might be right up your alley!

I went into this movie fully expecting ridiculousness, but that "moment" was little too much. That, and the other "creatures" (amphibians I guess?).
@drsammunroe21 күн бұрын
I have no idea what those are supposed to be haha, and since they were outside my area of expertise, I didn't want to comment. But just from a very basic ecological perspective, I struggle to believe a creature can thrive at the very bottom of the ocean, for millions of years, and still retain the ability to walk around at the surface and breath air. Overtime, evolution would do its thing and they would probably lose the ability to breath air if they didn't need it. Just my guess though. Thanks for watching!

Regarding chances of attack, statistics are based on whole populations, not on the much smaller number of people who actually enter theater. Therefore, rather than using lightning strike as a comparison, why NOT use boating accident? Aren't shark attacks as common as death or injury to swimmers by boat props?
