I watch and review the shark science and ecology in Deep Blue Sea #sharks #science #ecology #marinebiology
I am Dr Sam Munroe, and I’m an ecologist. That means I study plants and animals and how they interact with their environment. I got my start in ecology studying sharks and so I love watching shark movies and dissecting the science (or lack there of!) in these films!
Remember that sharks are important for healthy oceans and most species pose no danger to humans. Shark bites are incredibly rare, sharks don’t target people, and when bites do occur, they are often a case a mistaken identity. Sharks should be celebrated, not feared.

Hi! I'm studying neuroscience and marine biology. Brain size, even brain size in comparison to body size is actually not correlated to intelligence. It's a combination of a lot of things including neuronal density, size, and axon conduction. If it was brain size (both relative and total) then apes would actually not be that intelligence compared to animals like whales, types of birds, and some lizards. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the info! I hope everyone sees your comment. I would love to direct you to a shark brain scientist whose work may interest you. yopaklab.com/ Dr Kara Yopak is an expert on shark brains, she has studied them for years. Hi! :) I saw the video as well and she didn't necessarily refer to getting neurological results that quickly as unrealistic as rather scientific results. However neurons, w/ little exceptions, cannot regrow other than taking over some functions of neighbouring cells, let alone stretch or reach out in a matter of seconds.

I can't help it, I love this stupid movie. The actors are taking it SO seriously and the shark behaviour is so silly, I can't hate it. I also like that it's very clear that these are highly modified sharks, not some natural animal that went rogue or something. They're intelligent and attacking people for a reason. Unlike some other movies we could Jaws. .....Which I also kind of love.

It's true, most of the actors play it dead straight, which makes it even more hilarious. I really did have such a blast watching it again. My original cut of my reaction was 12 minutes longer and that extra time was mostly just me gushing about the best scenes. Like when the shark flings the stretcher into the glass! But sadly, I had to cut it because it was blocked due to copywrite ID!

It was always a treat when this came on in the summer, even though I had it on DVD. Movies are better when you're looking for something to watch and they're just about to start *_* I think my favourite scene is when the shark bites his arm off, the whole thing with the science and the tension is so dramatic and there's a horror element with all the blood going everywhere. That much overpressure from that much explosive at that range, no one in the water is surviving that. You wouldn't even need to fill the shark up with dynamite, you could just use the dynamite like depth charges and kill it with overpressure. My burning shark question, you said that sharks don't attack humans for food but then what is the explanation for the shark activity recorded from shipping disasters where people in the water were attacked and killed? Is it still a curiousity thing or is it just opportunistic feeding?

They dont go catch sharks to feed to their sharks. The shark they fed is the one with the licence plate at the start wich was why the licence plate had to be removed. It was sold to them by people who caught it. There was a time period where people would get bounties for catching sharks, especially after the fearmongering jaws caused. My guess is that the movie has that bountyhunting setting and this place gets the food that way.

Thanks for that. I was worried people would like it less because they knew I had seen it long ago, even if it had been while. I can't imagine anyone thinking that a shark scientist hasn't seen this movie, it's a classic!

@@drsammunroe Have you got any idea how sharks deal with illnesses like this? How is their pain reception? I may have read somewhere that they are able to tolerate high amounts of physical trauma. Is this true?

The third movie was alright for a b movie. I heard the second was terrible partially since a retread of the first but I haven't seen it yet.

It actually has less to do with the sharks themselves, and more to do with Christianity.

As I commented in your video on Jaws, this movie story plot was taken from the back story of the shark in the book Jaws. They only changed the sharks species from White shark to Mako shark (and not what type mako). The license plate late pulled from the shark's mouth is exactly the same one pulled out the "Mako" In Jaws when they cut it open. On a human note; someone seriously needs to get their money back from the contractors building that facility. The water tight doors are on backwards, the glass window that can break with a fart, the moon pool without double hatches, the walls made of cement crumbling everywhere as if it's 199 years old. Lack of emergency escape routes and equipment. Then they called emergency to Coast guards who sent a chopper that crashed and no one comes to check in 12 hours lost contact. Great video thanks for the info.

It is that way now...but in the 1960-70's Nasa used imperial...and we are the only country to put men on the moon.

I have been watching your shark movies and have now seen them all, I would love to see more and/or movies about other natural predator movies. One of my favorite is Lake Placid about a crocodile and what you would think of it. Since I know you said you study a variety of animals not just sharks, though not sure how much you know about croc's would still love to see it.
