Hmm you do raise a few good issues which could be valid or invalid depending on several factors. But I must point out a few things. 1. The whole role model argument is not that strong. 2. Women of color representation arguments isn't that strong .. you must first consider what was the ratio of women of color across the board.. school.. high school.. uni.. etc and plot that on a graph across all the difference fields. For instance if women of color made up 3% of the total population at high school then it should not be surprising of 3% made it to professor level. 3. Maternity. Well that's a choice.. women can decide to become mothers or they can devote their life to science.. you can't do both... you can't be an absolute amazing parent and a top tier scientist all at the same time.. this is common sense.. because focus and commitment issues. And it's the same for men.. they can't be an amazing good enough husband and parent and also be a top tier scientist all at the same time.. you gotta sacrifice one or the other.. if you embrace both then you just become mediocre at both. This is common sense which you seem to lack .. you seem to operate in reverse logic.. where you first decide what you want things to be like then changing the world to accomplish those things .. instead of accepting the facts and truth and letting things fall in place in their natural order. You seem to want to have you cake and eat it too which is a rather common phenomenon these days.. quite pathological. Here is an example. Person A I'd very passionate about gravity and so he started early studied and researched and worked hard ever day and every moment of his life towards discovering the deepest science behind gravity.. he passed all his exams with flying colors .. he sacrificed having gf..hanging out with friends and family.. he sacrificed so many things.. he didn't want family bc he knew he could give them the attention they needed.. he only had one goal and one goal only.. and so sure enough he became the top tier scientist... at the cost of all the other things that he didn't get to be Person B: He didn't really have any passions.. he just wanted to make good money.. he was slightly academically inclined.. he went out and had fun.. gfs.. family.. etc.. he did just enough to get him to his goal.. which was to be a mediocre professor or something like that only bc it's comfortable living.. he isn't a master .. he only can recite the knowledge in the books.. he isn't in a rush.. he doesn't push himself .. he doesn't wanna make any discoveries.. he just wants to kill time and get paid while doing that. You are trying to enforce a system where individuals sacrifice and will power are hugely neglected only in the name of equal representation.. its not about equal representation.. its about who is the best and most driven towards accomplishing that task and is the best at it... its a competition..its war. It's survival of the fittest.. its evolution staring right at you..and your option when faced with the binary world of evolution is to bend over.. or you'll just be trying to twist the fabric of universe and invite mental illness to grab hold of you. I recommend you change your mode of thinking from reverse principle thinking to first principle thinking.

I agree. Id also argue that an important factor is onterest aswell. In this day and age more and more parents, and schools, are forcing this on kids. The idea that you must enter stem or else you wont make any money and youll work at maccas forever. So people enter these fields with out any real passion and leave later. And its problematic with women due to the fact that also, women in general will not find as much passion as men in these fields due to there nature. And women are great, but modern feminism teaches that the only way for women to be happy is to be a stereottpical man. Then when they do they are sad, due to wasting life, and without love, or without a real driving passion. Women may find more happiness in other fields. And thats okay. Men and women are different, people need to start being okay with that.

What’s an even bigger issue is the lack of women in logging, mining, & commercial fishing; we should do what ever we can to bump those numbers up. :)

Isn't the overall anti-intellectualism and pro-competition sensibility in most of the world the core of the problem? You take a massive collective of demographics of people with high intellects and fragile social skills + a lifetime of social abuse for not being "normal" and you're gonna get cutthroat environments where ruthless opportunism and careerism run rampant and dominate the hierarchies in place. You do NOT want competition in the STEM, but good pay and respectability are premium resources and those resources ARE. NOT. SHARED. They should be, sure, but that would require profligate generosity on behalf of a society that values science for it's exploitation, not its enlightenment. Collaborative efforts require that you put your ego in check and too many intellectuals have had to fight tooth and nail for any modicum of respect and that in turn, can make tyrants and divas out of anybody. And they come from all walks of life so they carry the prejudices of their respective class environs. And racism is designed to create intrastructural competition. It's to pit the working classes against each other so there's no solidarity amongst them to combat their executive governors. And as a society, we don't know how to function without exploiting entire demographics of people in varying levels of slavery so nobody wants to help the problem be resolved, and attacking education--namely by turning it into a class commodity--is a major method in use to promulgate racist inequality.

Why don’t you ask for equal representation in commercial fishing or logging or mining?

Really good clear explanation of this pipeline issue. Also enjoy your new videos that are blowing up. Good job on finding a way to be a female role model for young people. I have found growing up as a man that I struggle to recognise women as people in the same way as men partly because I never read many books/watched many films growing up with female main characters. I hope more and more people growing up now don’t have that weird unnatural distinction to deal with.

I'm a woman, I wanted to be a chemist when I was in high school but eventually decided it wasn't for me. I went and became an electrician and being in a male dominated field has been a little interesting. I'm going into a tech job soon and hoping to keep women in male dominated spaces.

When I was a kid, the USSR sent up Valentina Tereshkova. A few years later I talked about it with my Dad, an educator. I said that I was impressed that she was a 'lady astronaut.' He responded by observing that the 'lady' part was redundant - she was a cosmonaut [he was a stickler], pure and simple. This was in 1968 or so, and it stuck with me ever since. Women in STEM have made huge, but mostly overlooked, contributions and will continue to do so. The system itself needs to be examined and refined with the goal of increasing diversity, for without it we get nowhere fast.

Thank you for this video! I’m an aspiring academic, on the arts side however! Working towards my BA right now. I notice a lot of issues when it comes to equality amongst my peers and professors. However it has massively improved! I’ve had many amazing female professors, transgender professors and people of color who were my professors! I think this issue will hopefully slowly fizzle out as more folks like you speak about it and raise awareness!❤

Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It doesn't really matter if you are in science or arts, these problems exist everywhere, i am sure female art professors face the same problems. I am glad you are having a really positive experience and are seeing change. And it is great to hear you have lots of female professors. When I did my first degree in biology (2006-2010) I only had 2 female professors during my entire degree!

@@drsammunroe of course! Thanks for making great videos! I can’t believe you only had 2 female professors. I actually was going to study biology and my first year I was in 2 biology classes and the professors were all female!
