Virginian who grew up in Manassas here. I’ve walked every inch of that battlefield and know the area and history well. That was one of the best, most concise videos on First Manassas I’ve seen. Well done!

Not sure the AONV was about to "attack" those cities, the idea of the "invasion" was to entice Maryland to join the Confederate side.

Thanks! Going on a mini historical vacation to Saratoga in a fe weeks, reading books and playing a few war games. But the animated map is truly helpful to pull it all together. I must admit, at first you sounded young but then you sounded young and informed.

It's unfortunate that very few Americans are aware of how Gates stole Arnold's rightful credit for this battle. When Gates wasn't busy trying to sidestep the chain of command and undermine Washington, he was screwing Arnold. There's more to Arnold's story than most are aware of.

Gates had tapped Tadeusz Kościuszko, a Polish-Lithuanian military engineer, to survey the country between the opposing armies, choose the most defensible position, and fortify it. Finding just such a spot near Saratoga, overlooking the Hudson at Bemis Heights, Kościuszko laid out a robust array of defenses, nearly impregnable. Artillery emplacements on Bemis Heights prevented the British from advancing on the river road and forced them inland to try and take the artillery in the rear, where they found the Americans in a blocking position on fortified high ground. His judgment and meticulous attention to detail frustrated the British attacks during the Battle of Saratoga. Kościuszko's work at Saratoga received great praise from Gates, who later told his friend, Dr. Benjamin Rush: "The great tacticians of the campaign were hills and forests, which a young Polish engineer was skillful enough to select for my encampment."

This is an excellent video. I am currently putting together a lesson on the American Revolution for an English Student of mine. I had really been struggling to understand/comprehend other content on the Battles of Saratoga. This is the best video I've watched so far and I will definitely be using what I learned in this video to put together my lesson. thank you

The flanking was not a surprise to Hooker. He had anticipated the possibility and taken steps to deal with the possibility. Both steps failed, one due to 11th corp commander Howard's negligence, not protecting his exposed flank as he had been ordered, and the other just plain bad luck. The telegraph had failed, and a rider sent ordering Reynolds to move his crop to support the 11th on that flank. The rider got lost (even with nearly a fool moon) and the order was delayed. Regardless, the event was not decisive. The 11th corp was the weakest corp, as they showed again at Gettysburg. The battle was lost the next day, primarily due to Hooker getting concussed by the cannon ball explosion leaving the Union without leadership at the most crucial time int he battle. The South had used up all reserves at this point, and the Union had plenty reserves. But no leader to move them where they were needed. Couch, and Hooker himself did not realized how incapacitated his was, so he did not relinquish command. At that point the Union was on the verge of victory, but that one cannon ball changed everything. A bit to one side of where it hit, Hooker is killed, Couch takes over immediately, moves reserves to drive off the Confederates, and you would have had a crushing Union victory.

It is the Battle of Brooklyn....get it right.
@woobbryant
@woobbryant Жыл бұрын
Get it right yourself - both are correct. It's not as though the battles have official names, established by law, laid down by edict from the gods on high (under penalty of death!) But it was originally known as the Battle of Long Island, and even today it is still referred to as the Battle of Long Island by many historians and reference works, at least as often (and probably more often) than as the Battle of Brooklyn. For example, the Encyclopedia Britannica has this entry for the battle: "The Battle of Long Island, also known as the Battle of Brooklyn or the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, (August 27-29, 1776), in the American Revolution, successful British action in Brooklyn, New York, against the American Continental Army and the first major battle of the war since the American declaration of independence on July 4." Also, the Washington Library at Mount Vernon refers to it as The Battle of Long Island (as do many historians). Similarly, both the American History Channel and the website History . com call it The Battle of Long Island. On the other hand, the New York Historical Society lists the names in the reverse order of preference (but still considers both correct). From their website: "On August 27, 1776, on the marshy fields of Gowanus and Red Hook, George Washington and his rag-tag army of untrained soldiers fought the British Army, one of the most powerful military forces in the world. The rebels were ingloriously defeated. The first major armed campaign for the colonies after declaring independence from Great Britain, the Battle of Brooklyn (also referred to as the Battle of Long Island) stands as the largest single battle of the Revolutionary War, and one that would loom large in George Washington’s consciousness." (Note the key phrase in that quote "also referred to as the Battle of Long Island") So it really just comes down to a matter of personal preference. But I challenge you to find a single source prior to 1850 that called it The Battle of Brooklyn. Good luck with that!

2:44 - those defensive fortifications were designed by my fellow countryman, gen. Tadeusz Kościuszko. Kościuszko was truly a brilliant military engineer and proved it many times. He also fortified, for instance, West Point.

@@halfstep44 Thanks for the info. Kościuszko is important in history of Poland and Belarus. He was a poor strategist, good tactitian and excellent military engineer, maybe even genius when it comes to military engineering. I think he was ahead of his times by decades when it comes to military engineering. I think the US lacked somebody like him during the american civil war. Have you seen a film Glory? In the end the regiment is sent in suicide assult on fortified confederate possitions. I can't imagine Kościuszko would have given such sensless order. I bet, if he was there, he would have tried military engineering and would dug tunnels into confederates to plant charges there and blow the fort up :D

Actually no, not yet at this time. Funnily enough, at the very start it was the Union who had an Army of Virginia and the Confederacy that had an Army of the Potomac.
