How comfortable are those bilsteins for daily driving? I dont tow/haul at all and I do as much offroading as you do in your lowered truck 🤣. Are they harsh on the highways and city streets? I love 160 meters! I was going to make a coil to run mobile. A long time ago 160 was used like the 2 meter band. Contrary to popular ham belief, it is really the only band that has a strong/reliable ground wave. Usually even works when the sun wipes out every other NVIS band for local/semi regional coms. I wish more lower power stations would get on it. There is always plenty of elbow room down there. I was able to get some contacts on my big loop for that contests but none outside of the USA. Thanks for the video.

@n5yiz 29 күн бұрын
You can adjust the 20m version down to get the higher bands. I just use the quarter wave formula to get it close and then fine adjust from there. Use a Sharpie to mark the tubes for different band configs. It's going to be a couple months, but I'll be installing the 20m and 40m permanently on a Rohn mast. I'll try to video as much as I can.

Morning, I built this as per the video and my SWR is off the chart. I am new to this and am at a loss of where I went wrong. I am thinking it could be the pig tail, it was my first time building one. But I am not sure that I constructed it correctly. Can you explain on guide me to a video of how to make a pig tail? Or maybe the choke balum wasn't built exactly as it should be. I removed the choke balum and put in a 1:9 UnUn and got he SWR to come down to a 1:1 in the 21mHz range.73 KN6SCF
@n5yiz
@n5yiz Ай бұрын
The pigtail I used is just a simple common mode choke. The center pin of the coax goes to one side of the dipole and the shield (braid) is attached to the other. It sounds like you may have a short if you wrapped your own. Check for continuity through the choke for both the center conductor and braid with a multimeter. I'm not sure if you were stating a sweep of the dipole with your Unun resulted in the lowest SWR at 21mhz or your were targeting 21mhz. The specs for the one in the video is for 14mhz (20m). Sorry, it's hard to gauge someones technical knowledge through the comment section. As a quick test, I think it would be best to bypass the choke or unun entirely. Just connect your feedline directly to each leg of the dipole. Sweep or check the SWR. I'm working on an update video about a 40m rotatable I made a few months back. I'll try to explain the feedpoint a little better. Video should be out Monday if you don't get is solved until then. Good Luck!

I am wanting to build one for 60 meters. Be about 100' long so I was planning on starting out with 3" tubing and tapering down from there. Plan would be to get it up to optimum height above ground which would be around 110 feet. Nice work and thanks for the video.
@n5yiz
@n5yiz Ай бұрын
That's going to be incredible. If you have the tower to support the weight, you'll have no problem getting to the required length startng with 3" tube. I used 1.25" primary and worked down to a 3/8 tube and that got me to 32.5' easy. It droops without the support truss, but it's not even close to collapsing under it's own weight. Using a 3" primary you have a lot of headroom to get to 100 feet. I honestly just finished drilling and bolting the tubes for the 40m last week. I plan on using it during field day. I did change a couple of things since I made that video. I'll make another showing the revisions.

On my ic7100 both HF and VHF/UHF sockets are clipped, not soldered... I had always assumed it was to provide for some flex between the connector bolted to the chassis and the connection on the board to allow for thermal creap that a soldered connection wouldn't allow... I don't know why one of yours would be soldered and not the other!

Maybe they thought the SO-239 center sleeve might get loose over time? I thought about soldering the VHF N socket, but decided against in case of warranty work.
@n5yiz
@n5yiz Ай бұрын
Now that I think about it, the center pin of the N connector is not really engaged until the outer sleeve is threaded on. No so with the PL259/SO239. You can put leverage on the SO239 center sleeve by just inserting the PL259 center pin half way or so. Interesting.

To me, amphenol or other quality brand is worth it. The 9700 is a great radio. I have one. I tried cheap connectors, they lose contact or even raise VSWR. Connectors can be specified as 50, 75, or non specific. There is a physical difference. My Tektronix TTR506 can measure the difference. The meter on the 9700 may or may not. But if performance matters, spend $14, and know what you are getting.
