I remember this song. I was in college at L.A.C.C. at the time and listening to country radio as well as FM radio rock an' roll in the late 1960's. There was an early Saturday evening TV show featuring country music ( I don't recall the name of the show), and Webb Pierce was one of the guest performers. He sang this song.

Two of Webb’s staff writers and close friends at his Cedarwood Publishing were Max Powell and Wayne Walker. Both could reach a high tenor, necessary with Webb’s naturally somewhat high pitch. Max Powell most commonly sang tenor on Webb’s Decca sessions. But this time it sounds like Wayne Walker who also wrote this song. It’s definitely not Red Sovine nor is it Webb overdubbing himself as some comments mentioned. There are some Wayne Walker examples on YT. Although he was known as a songwriter he was also a pretty good singer. Check out ‘After The Boy Gets The Girl’, ‘Love,Love,Love’, or ‘Just Before Dawn’ (duet with Teresa Brewer) all from about this time period when Wayne was making records for Decca subsidiaries Coral and Brunswick. Thanks for keeping real country music alive.
