My encore azaleas are getting too large for the area....is it too late to prune them now? (They bloomed early spring, but I didn't have time to do it then.) Or should I wait until after the 2nd bloom?

I bought one on Clearance from Lowe’s that the leaves are really burnt. Should I cut it to ground and let it grow again?
@letsdothistogether60896 ай бұрын
I wouldn't. I bought some burnt ones from Walmart on clearance after they bloomed. I put them in the ground. The dead leaves fell off as new leaves came in.

How to take care of shrubs to make them grow?

I think I bought this Encore carnation on accident. I was buying some other pink azaleas and somehow came home with this one in fall of 2021 among many others. It grew slowly in zone 7b and didnt do much until Spring of 2024. About a month ago, it finally put out 20 or 30 beautiful blooms. Whats great about these blooms is twofold. 1) The blooms look almost like roses and are fairly large and quite bulky, especiallyfor an azalea. 2) The blooms are still there and are now just starting to fall apart after almost one month of display despite 2 or 3 heavy rainstorms. My other more traditional azalea blooms only lasted about a week before they were gone. Bottom line is this is by far my favorite azalea and the only one I would buy again.

Can you tell me the brand of the pine bark you used. I have an Encore Coral in a three gallon container also going to plant in another pot. Thanks

Any fine pine bark will do! If it's unavailable, you may use compost. Happy planting!

Would you fertilize newly planted azaleas (planted in spring and have already bloomed)? Just wanted to check since it’s a new planting. Thank you so much!
@Encoreazalea8 ай бұрын
You can but it's ok to wait until next spring!
@triciaholder19589 ай бұрын
My encore azaleas have never bloomed twice in a year. They only bloom every spring. Could the reason be that I don’t fertilize them? They are pretty full when they do bloom and some years they have been spectacular.
@Encoreazalea8 ай бұрын
Let's try to decode why! Are they planted in shade?
@lesiadziuma60909 ай бұрын
Thank you for this information. We have old bushes of azaleas and they have blooms on the top of them. The stem is very bare without many leaves. No flowers. Could you cut this kind of bush to the ground or at least one food from the ground for them to get Fuller and Bloom all over?
@Encoreazalea8 ай бұрын
Yes - renewal pruning can help in these situations. Here's a helpful video on how to do so: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYaYanyBg9Nsb8Usi=GDb0fS-ZaLbat0DG

Can the Autumn Fire survive a Long Island winter in an outside container in zone 7b?
@Encoreazalea8 ай бұрын
Autumn Fire grows well in zone 7 but you may find that a container is one zone colder than in the ground. Try moving the container near your home during winter, and covering during frost or heavy freezes.
@barbarareiszel18479 ай бұрын
How large of a container would you need for the Fire Azalea?
@Encoreazalea8 ай бұрын
This would depend on how large of a plant you purchase. Plan for the container to be 1.5 times the size of the root ball.

I live in eastern Tennessee. My encore azaleas are planted in pretty heavy shade. They bloomed a little bit in the spring, and then went nuts with the blooming along about September. They are a little spindly, but beautiful. My question is, does being planted in the shade reduce the number of blooms versus being planted in the sun? And thank you for the excellent video! So happy to hear someone say, I don’t stress about this. I have watched way too many plant care videos where people obviously were stressing. For example, I’ve watched videos about how to take care of angel hair ferns. I don’t do anything to mine but cut them back once a year and buying large they’ve done great.
@Encoreazalea8 ай бұрын
So glad you are finding our videos helpful! Encore Azaleas will bloom less in shade, or grow to be more leggy. We suggest 4-6 hours of sun!

Hi Jim. Do you still have this Encore Azalea in this container? I had to dig one up & container plant one last Spring. It’s still doing nicely. I plan to root prune maybe next Spring so I can keep it in the same pot. Not sure what kind it is but it only blooms once & stays real small.

My azalea is in full sun from morning to evening and it barely has leaves on, it looks like a bonsai, just empty branches with very small barely any leaves on. Im wondering if it's too much sun? I don't want it to die, it does flower very pretty in spring but even it's flowers go old very fast from the hot heat.
@Encoreazalea Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that! What zone or region do you live in?
@opnlms Жыл бұрын
If I prune after they bloom will they bloom more often than if I don't prune at all? Also, do I need to worry about you much sun on the roots.
@Encoreazalea Жыл бұрын
Pruning may actually stimulate blooming a bit more than not pruning at all! Mulching up to the edge of the root ball will help protect roots as they grow. Thanks!

Nothing like a beautiful, flowering, living plant! Mr. Lee does great work with these beauties an I appreciate his efforts and the results of his labor. Kudos! I saw him on TV, on the ‘Garden Smart’ program. It’s awesome what God has allowed him to learn and do. I love Encore Azaleas!! I have 2 in my yard and they NEVER disappoint. They’ve bloomed every year for 3 years now. I wanted to get into the contest on Facebook to try and win 1; but my Mother has passed away and the contest is for someone and their Mother. I wish them good luck!

I planted some April Tryst encore azaleas in a container and they started browning after two weeks. I attributed it to transplant shock and just trimmed after they bloomed and watered regularly. Hopefully, they will come back.

I think my late husband used potting soil, peat moss, vermiculite and sand. Not even sure he used potting soil, but all peat moss would be too acidic, right? Trying to remember his exact recipe to re-pot the azaleas and camellias he left us. Wherever it is you live, it is beautiful!
@Tommytoolsqueezer6 ай бұрын
Peat moss is good for Azaleas, they like it slightly on the acidity side of the pH scale.

I just moved to Fairhope, AL from the Midwest and not so familiar with this Zone plantings, but Azaelas were recommended, I planted 12 Encore Azaleas in a front yard bed. They look horrible. Fairhope received a tremendous amount of rain, it rains every day in the summer. I2 plants have died and the rest have brown and yellow leaves and Wonder if they have root rot. Can I save these? I put pine bark mulch in the planting hole but wonder if I did not plant the root ball too low. I appreciate any help you can offer.

I sure hope Encore can help you, they are absolutely the best. I absolutely love Encore Azaleas. Both my neighbor & I have them. A few years ago, he was about to throw his out bcos they were not flowering, but he had the opposite problem than you do, he was not watering them at all. As soon as they began getting water they have kept blooming profusely like magic. I bought a small Chiffon a few years ago and although it is hasn't grown very tall, it flowers abundantly all the time. It is an absolute delight, bcos I can forget it and simply enjoy the flowers. I just bought 2 Autumn Fires today and I am looking forward to planting them as soon as it rains again to replace a beautiful Shasta daisy which was so strong and healthy, that I had to divide it. Unfortunately, the rabbits got to it in Summer 2021and completely destroyed it, along with my Black-eyed Susan's, Oriental and Asiatic lilies. BTW, I too moved to AL from the Midwest.
@susandahlstrom29392 жыл бұрын
@@una8567 Thanks for your reply. Came from Wisconsin, zone 4, which is a big difference from AL. Big learning curve, but I will keep reading!! I’m going to raise the plants out of the ground a few inches and hope that will help with the drainage, and some pine bark soil conditioner.
@YatesNac2 жыл бұрын
This is basically my East Texas bonsai soil mix, except I get some red lava rock and break it up into pea or pebble sized chunks and add it to the soil too. Drains great, works great! I also add some cactus/palm potting soil to help with drainage.

Very helpful! If removing spent blooms should you remove just the bloom or the whole bud? When I take weak blooms off the central components remain. Should I be removing all parts of the flower to encourage further blooming?
@Encoreazalea2 жыл бұрын
Jessica, either works! Deadheading is often for the aesthetics or your preference on azaleas. They'll rebloom even if you don't deadhead!
